I lived there in the 80s when it was a thriving town. Visited in June 2023 for the first time in 27 years and was horrified by what had happened to the place. One thing that your video showed (that I didn’t see on my visit) that gave me a pang of sadness was Major of Glengarry pub (“Majors”). A complete ruin. It was such a great little pub back in the 80s, a favorite hangout for me and my friends, as well as The Cabot, which was still there and very busy when I visited, but I was unsettled to see bouncers at each entrance. Wtf? Thanks for the video!

@@JoefishJ Speaking of Frome one the things Glastonbury lacks is having public transport access to train stations and easy access to the seaside. I would love a bus route between Frome train station and Highbridge train station that would stop at Shepton Mallet Wells Glastonbury Town Highbridge train station and Burnham On Sea. If you use public transport in Glastonbury it is not easy to get to the seaside or a train station.

Weston was such a great seaside town back in the day. In the 70s we spent every summer there. I particularly remember the hot summer of ‘76. My dad used to run some dodgems on the old pier and I saw the last steamer leave for Penarth! It was a busy bustling seaside town, and quite upmarket back then. The beaches were busy in the summer with Punch and Judy, donkeys, etc. Taking the open top double decker bus to Sand Bay was always a treat - a touch of the Riviera for people of modest means! Even in the 80s it was a great place to be. Not been back since ‘89. Very sad to see what it has become. Lack of investment, poor political decisions and no doubt some corruption along the way.

I’m from and live in Weston. It’s sad to see the impact the lack of funding and tourism has had on the town. Away from the town centre and ends of the sea front it’s not too bad. There are areas that are relatively affluent. Most of us with money just hop on the train to Bristol when we want to go shopping or out for drinks/ food etc.

Without Tourism Weston would be dead along time ago in my opinion... It's the only thing keeping Weston and the majority of the seasonal businesses afloat. Without Tourism Weston is done for! I was born in Weston-super-Mare general hospital in April 1962, when it would have probably been in it's prime. A few months later, our family moved to South Wales because my dad was from there. I've visited Weston several times but not for the past 20 years. It seems to have gone downhill in that time. However, I have lived in Blackpool 3 times in the past 20 years (though I don't live there now) and much of it is also a slum. It seems the grand old days of British seaside resorts have lost their former glory. I don't know what my mum would make of this video if she was still alive because she was from Weston and was of the opinion that it was a premier seaside resort, a jewel in the crown, so to speak - a place to be proud to be from.

Weston-super-Mare resident here. Just for balance, there is a lot of wonderful architecture, music, art, culture and pretty spaces in town. Most of this video focuses on an area out of the town center and not off the main promenade at all. Weston has its issues, but like all places, look down and you'll find the gutter.

Thanks for this interesting video, my perspective on Weston is this, I've been travelling down from the West Midlands since the 70s and I have noticed the decline, car parking charges are high, charging £1 per person to walk down the pier that was free originally is another thing, the quality of some of the sea front traders leaves alot to be desired, over priced poor quality chips and traders trying to short change you has been my experiences, people also don't have the money to spend even on days out with the cost of living crisis, the younger generation prefer to look at their phones all day long than come to the seaside, the older generation who supported places like Weston have gone, myself I'll be honest and say I prefer to holiday in Weymouth nowadays, it seems to have survived and is busy every summer.

Its grim up North too, in some areas more than others. Seaside towns and smaller towns, once industrious, ecspecially. Sparks of hope, here and there. Its all about investment and rejuvenation. Such a waste of potential and abandonment of infrastructure and people. A cost of living and housing crisis that is further wearing people down. Enjoyed your informative vid & the positive energy and empathy. I would go on holidays to the West Country when I was a kid. Mostly Cornwall, around St Ives & the Lizard Peninsula. I live in a coastal village. Air B&B, tourists and second home buyers have destroyed our community, and so quickly too. The people who live and work here have been priced out meaning loads business' have closed. This leaves second home owners and air b&b owners to complain that they/their guests have no amenities, they therefore resell, no one local can afford it and no one else wants it because it's in the village that they helped to bleed dry. Well we locals have had to leave because we couldn't afford to feed our families because you wanted a spare house. Of course there are other factors but greed is the main one.

All seaside towns have suffered since the glory days before people went abroad on holiday. Weston is no worse than other places and I'd say it's far from being the worst seaside town - look at Blackpool for instance. Think you laid it on a bit thick with all the " look at the empty buildings and disrepair" Weston isn't any worse than anywhere else in that department and is still very busy and has plenty to offer the holiday makers and the locals of course.

As a trained RNLI beach life guard I can tell you they struggle to pay wages bro... It's a civilian funded charity, either way I hope something happens! Any opinions of next filming spots mate?
@Bernard-ux2eb10 ай бұрын
@@JoefishJ RNLI is the best funded charity in the UK, they have the money. There will be a pot. Do Weston's parks and gardens, the restoration of the flower clock (look that one up, it's quite funny), seafront and Grand Pier at peak grockle, do it in the genre of Magnum photographer, Martin Parr. Weston Woods and Sand Bay (some lovely new builds down there). I usually live in rough rural Thailand or on land regen projects in a Bunkabin in the UK. Lived in Western domesticated civilisation in Weston for a few years now and it's bliss in comparison.

Went to South-End on Sea yesterday. As a legal immigrant and British that left another country due to it's crime what i don't get is the following. The country i left, a crime cesspool is poorer, but the upkeep of infrastructure is MUCH better than the rich UK. The decline is everywhere in small things, from road markings, general upkeep, the question I'm trying to answer is, where is the money going!??? Why are countries that are poorer than the UK in a better state!?? And nothing to do with Brexit. It was the only thing that tried to get your sovereignty back watered down by 'open borders'. Illegals get more help than British citizens. Unacceptable! The nefarious globalist norm everywhere that people should reject.

Weston walls is an art project spin off from bristols upfest. Once a year chosen artists come and paint. The old cinema had just been taken over by a company that specializes in retro films etc. Now an annual event. For someone who grew up here you could have found bits to make it look better but apparently you wanted to make the place look worse. I think you make good videos though so keep up the good work but maybe promote the good things more. Ps Backpacker Ben said more positive things in 3 sentences on this video than in his whole vlog.
@JoefishJ9 ай бұрын
See how you worded that "bits to make it Look better" mate.... Papering over the cracks and pretending the town isn't falling apart isn't going to help. Have you seen the Prime Minister has brought up in the house of commons the Bald and Bankrupt video that I'm in where I show him around town... Showing the REAL side has made a difference.
@glyno779 ай бұрын
Joe other than a few crumbling buildings and a couple empty shops what exactly is so bad compared with anywhere else in the UK? I've travelled and chose to move here when I could have gone anywhere. It's a lovely place to live. Some amazing properties too if you can afford them. Even with all the rehab centres you will find more junkies in any big city and homelessness is a worldwide issue not just Weston-super-Mare. Cmon fella you know the angle you filmed this with. If you think a bald and bankrupt video is gonna make the government listen you're mistaken. Anyway keep up the vids you have more knowledge and better personality than those other 2 and hopefully your sub count grows quickly! ❤WSM

Hey Joe my names Steve I'm from weston super mare too I was born and bred here and I believe I heard u say to that young guy with the beard who was stood with the drinkers in the Italian gardens that u said u new him from school that school wouldn't have been wyvern by any chance would it? As that's where I went and I also remember that guy so did u go to wyvern as well joe? Also the town used to be buzzing pre 2012 because we used to have an annual beach festival called T4 on the beach live on channel 4 T.V which in sure u remember T4 used to bring so much attention positivity money and atmosphere to the town and 2012 was T4 on the beaches last year and after this weston has never been the same since in my opinion 👍

WE REGULARLY COME HERE FOR A NICE MEAL, WALK THE DOGS, GET SOME LOVELY HAND-MADE CHOCOLATES AT CHRISTOPHERS, WAITROSE, M&S, ETC! I AM ONLY A WAREHOUSE WORKER, BUT ALSO A "TRUTHER" , AND KNOW WHO IS ACTUALLY BEHIND THE WORLDWIDE DESTRUCTION OF COUNTRIES, CULTURES, ETC! I HELP PEOPLE ON THE STREETS WITH FOOD, GAS, MONEY, ETC, INCLUDING WELLS, BATH, TAUNTON, ETC!!!

Hey thanks for the comment! Have you seen my video on Burnham? Check it out on my channel, Weston is on another stratosphere as opposed to Burnham, the underbelly of Weston is nasty. I went soft on Weston if I'm honest due to having grown up in the town. I hope you enjoy the content, it's not all about bad places! Cheers

Burnham is - mostly - okay. Sadly there are some problems - there's a group of teenagers going around shooting birds and the ducks with a catapult and giving animals a kicking. Nasty evil little shxts. But, Burnham is still a place I don't want all the tourists to know about because it's a nice place to spend half a day. It's fairly quiet, parking is cheap, and it's just generally pleasant.

The thing is - Britain isn't a poor country! It's the increasingly unequal wealth distribution that's the problem. All those abandoned buildings - all that land - it's all owned by someone. Find out who and you'll find out where all the money's gone.
