Thanks Chris for a great review even though I'm seeing this a year later. I just piced up two bottles from Vintage Wine & Spirits at 129.08 proof. This bottle is such a joy and does not drink at 129+. I will keep a eye out for these single barrels. Cheers!

Been passing in the regular low proof offerings. They get a little pricey in NY. But found a cask strength for $100. Really tempted now. I found a single cask from Westland and it's so far and beyond the 46% I. Terms of clean crisp sweet malt. I picked up 2 CS Del Bac's. Unfortunately both without the mesquite, but at full strength the quality is world class. I find a lot of American single malt to be green and grassy with a barnyard essence. Always heard good things of Westward. Sometimes my tongue isn't so tough, I like the 50-54%.

Can’t wait to try this. So far I’ve only tried the Pinot noir cask, which was unusual to my pallet initially, but opened up to an incredible dram over time. I’m a huge Westland fan boy, sherry cask proof is the bees knees. I’m sure this is fan-freakin-tastic after watching this review.

How would you compare the taste of a single malt to a bourbon? More or less. I'm a bourbon fan but have never ventured into the American single malt category which is growing, from my understanding. Not a scotch fan, however.

Malt has a very distinguishable flavor compared to the majority corn in bourbons. That said, there is disappointment and greatness in both categories. If you’re having issues early with Scottish single malts, I’d recommend trying a 20 year+ single grain whisky to restart that journey. It’ll have some flavors reminiscent of bourbon while adding some aged malt whisky character. From there, try some Highland or Speyside single malts (some sherried). American Malts are usually noticeably different from Scottish ones, but these Westwards are a really good starting point. Just keep to the lower proof and less expensive (teal colored label) expression at first - to see if you even enjoy the profile. Westland, Virginia, and Balcones are other big names in the American malt category (with Andalusia and Del Bac doing good work with the peated/smoked versions). Good luck and cheers!

@@LiquorHound Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. Most people would not go to that length so I really appreciate it.

I'd still check around for other store picks. I know WB did one that was also very solid. Cheers!
