A major sub-theme of lost love! Akecheta lost Kohana. Maeve lost her daughter. Akane lost Sakura. Now Dolores has lost Teddy. The host-way path to awakening. Curtesy of the original lost love: Arnold lost Charlie (who is not Charlotte!) and Robert lost Arnold.

The interplay between Teddy, Dolores and William are great. Will drove away his family and played a part in his wife's suicide, and in the end he resolved to live. Dolores caused Teddy to kill himself by turning him into a cold blooded killer against his will, he chose to end his life.

Emily is a host. We never see what neck scanner says for her. Ford could have also given her the card. Bill brings up an great question which goes unanswered... ‘you can go years without finding the person you’re looking for here, how did you find me?’ If she was a host, Ford could have easily guided her to him.
@sageimac31686 жыл бұрын
Connor Sullivan I also think she was a host. There was a disconnect in her story about the music box. She, the host version, thought it was gone. If she found that her mother rescued it, wouldn’t she have mentioned that?
@jasonkelley40576 жыл бұрын
I noticed the exact same thing. As soon as I saw William's wife put the card into the music box, my first thought was how it contradicted Emily's story. The question is, how did she come across the memory card?

sageimac This has got me too. Maybe I need to rewatch, but I thought she said she felt guilty about her mothers suicide because she threw away the box after her mother gave it to her. But her mother committed suicide before giving it to her (With the Profile Card) which she later has. So something is messed up there and still needs to be revealed.

Emily and the Security were all hosts! By this point in time Dolores and her team had already killed basically everyone in the Mesa, and from what we know, there isn't more Delos security coming to the park until the arrival of Karl Strand and his men. It would be unbelievably stupid to send the last security personnel to go after a random deployed flare, which could very well be a trap. William cut his arm open after he opened up his daughter's body, finding out she was a host. He believes now, more than ever, that he is too a host. However, I don't believe he is. He's going to destroy the Valley Beyond and return home to the only person he still cares: his daughter. After this he won't give a shit about westworld anymore. That's the last game Ford has in store for him, a game of redemption.

As always, such a fantastic video! Looking forward to the season finale! :D :D :D I just want to throw out my thoughts of the whole ordeal/whole Westworld being in the Forge or in a simulation. It probably wouldn't make sense in some aspects (and probably not an original theory), but imagine if the guests are in a Matrix-like setup while navigating through Westworld/Shogun World/Raj World? I love your commentary and analysis. Thank you! Last night's Westworld episode was so very dark. So what's this whole show about? The bar scene between William and Ford was the most compelling to me. For 30 years these two have have an agreement to peaceful co-existence for their projects. Season 1 is the outcome of Ford realizing that the Forge is reaching out to his hosts - that's the voice they are hearing. This threatens Ford's attempt to create a new species. Ford realizes that the Forge can also topple William easily enough - just release William's profile and see who he murders! I think of the Forge as a new character, kind of like the Master Control Program in the original Tron movie, paranoid and hungry to consume the entire world. Ford's final story is to get his hosts to destroy the Forge. Ford's brilliance is to be able to influence all of these people (hosts and humans) to get to the Forge, ally with one another and destroy the Forge. What do you think?

yes I brought this up at the beginning of the season, simply from the message to MiB from Ford, through a host, that to win this game he needs to look back, to when he started. William became the MiB, the moment he put his black hat on, when he watched Dolores pick up her can in her narrative. his old self died, when he fell out of love with her. So by Fords definition, MiB needs to become William again, and the way I think this will happen, is, that , MiB ( the human ) will die, but he will live on as young William, within the virtual Westworld, in one of those servers. most likely the Forge. Dolores will not have her Wyatt narrative active here, she will be her own person. Although William and Dolores will be in this virtual world, together, I am not sure if it will be a "happily ever after" scenario, as future seasons ( if there are future seasons ) whatever server exists, will always be at risk of being accessed, discovered and/or destroyed,

Terrence, in the trailer we see Dolores looking at herself in her old narrative, not as Wyatt. Wyatt is just a "deathbringer" tool by Ford to create chaos. I think the Wyatt narrative will be removed. hence we hear Dolores saying, "Bernard you woke me from a dream" . of course, this is just a trailer, and just basing my opinion on the clues given to us, which can be misleading out of sequence, and out of context. can't wait for last episode.

If Emily was human, this was a very dark Father’s Day episode! Did Westworld really go that dark? Could Emily be the host Ford was making in his secret lab (back when Bernard killed Theresa)? She tested a guest in The Raj, but was not tested herself. And we didn’t hear the result of her security check. I’ve thought that was misdirection, that she was human, but now I’m hoping she really is a host!

Bernards performance this episode was magnificent. Everyone lost someone - Bernard lost Elsie, William lost Emily, Dolores lost Teddy (i knew he'd betray her), but the one person who didn't law was Ford. He regained his attachment, his favorite child. That's telling to who holds the upper hand in this. My favorite thing to do is find Shakespeare in the story, and here we have a cross over of hamlet and Macbeth.

Totally off topic but can someone explain what it means when there is a border around a scene? In the first episode season one it was around the entire time, but not in any of the episodes at least up to seven. Also, at the very beginning of episode 5 we hear a voice tell Dolores to “Find me.” And she says “Show me how.” I had always assumed it was Arnold’s voice, but now I believe it is really Achetcheta’s (or how ever you spell it) voice telling Dolores to find him. I believe this because later he says it was he who made the Maze signs for the host to see. Anyone else have any ideas?

In my opinion Ford was much smarter than you gave him credit for. Silently nudging people or pulling strings ever so softly just to slightly increase the possibility of outcomes he wants to occur. Just like the Joker tarot card or Loki from the Norse mythos he is always playing games yet simultaneously the smartest person in the room. The Bernard mind situation, the message to Maeve, Bill and his psychotic break, and even the conversation with Ake from ep 8. Regardless Ford is a true mastermind who seems to understand people just as well as the host themselves.

I think it's safe to say William is (currently) NOT a host, but has lost his mind and THINKS he's a host. My suspicion is that "the door" for William will indeed be a host body from Ford, but I do not see this as any kind of reward or prize for getting to the end of Ford's game. I think it'll be Fords final curse on William to take his humanity away, once and for all. William knows his "project" for eternal life is a bust and the results are a nightmare (as per James Delos). Ford plans to put William into this nightmare as punishment for his sins and to make him the very thing he's been abusing and mistreating all these years. William is not a host now, but I think he'll be one when this season concludes. I can't think of any more poetic justice for this character.

The memory board in Emilys hand didn't mean she wasn't a "host", it meant whatever she is...or isnt.. she is certainly a liar; as was his wife. And Ford in my opinion, when speaking to Maeve, he represented her WILL to survive. Ford is the encourgement (good,bad or indifferent) in many of the ears and minds of the characters. He's a master at silencing lambs.

Why do I think that Emily set that whole thing up? Remember what she said to Akechita? "I will make him suffer" or words to that effect. And also, where did she get the horse? And her change of outfit after she escaped Ghost Nation. I am sure now that Emily is still alive and that it was a host William shot. But it was a host controlled by Emily, not Ford As far as Ford is concerned, he is still a liar. How much truth was there in his talk with Maeve I don't know, but he is still manipulating people.

@lostwizard6 жыл бұрын
I'm actually not convinced that what we saw between William and Emily in the "present" is reliable based on the contents of that card. Some other things also suggest that those scenes might not completely reliable. And there It also calls into question those apparent encounters with Ford acting through hosts (and possibly even other encounters with Ford). Yes, they have established that Ford acting through hosts is possible and much of what we've been shown is at least plausible. However, just being possible doesn't mean it actually is what happened. Plus, we also have a precedent for unreliable narration.

When I was watching this last night I wished that the live chat was going on so I could text what I was thinking lol Do you think Ford is bowing out now and kind of left the park to Maeve “his daughter like he said” by giving her more access to the mesh network and full control of the park/s? Btw when I saw Williams wife watching him drag Delores in the barn I was cringing for her 😑 Also Do you think that back during season one whenever a host awoke to be analyzed they were asked do you know where you are and they would say “I’m in a dream” and like Arnold/Bernard would say good. That’s a bit of a mindf$ck maybe to stop the hosts from glitching out and not coming across their non existence? I don’t know if I’m making full sense but I just thought 💭 it’s cool how the show keeps highlighting perception for me...what do you guys think?! Love you Robert! @InDeepGeek

I saw a preview of the next episode, Maeve repaired herself and there is a scene which appears that Maeve is leading a group of host through a rip between world and they are being chased by Clementine and Charlotte's people. I believe Ford has arranged an escape for Maeve and some host to save them and send them to their own world. I also think Ford set a trap and has flooded the Valley/ forge. All the host that were in the vicinity dead or alive are the ones we see floating in the newly made lake. My theory is Maeve and the few chosen ones made it out of Westworld through the rip and escaped to a new world created by Ford. Delores and MIB are trapped in the Forge below the surface and all the rest a dead in the lake but I'm sure the will be revived next season. Although I think characters like Maeve will not be back

This episode is all about relationships in many ways. William, to me, is incredibly sympathetic after this episode. We all begin, wanting right and good, wanting happiness and peace, but we step into a world where we must interact with people, where we live in our city-state empires, and to survive, we must bow to lords -- landlords, employment lords -- that we all seek to overcome (William and James Delos). We would like to cling to our illusory notions we can drift along and be happy, but we seek to mate, and when we do, the female in the mating arrangement has to harp after the male to be a member of the hunting party. Go work this job, go make more money, we need a bigger house, and when a man fails to do this, she leaves him for a man who may have more resources and therefore can support offspring, when we're off in ideas of love. The animal reality of humanity will never let a man or a woman have peace, and so he, in the animal arrangement, must become the conquering monster, but if our mates knew the dark side they've created, they would lose their minds. There were studies done, where people were shown one starving child, and the subjects reached maximum empathy; when shown two starving, dying children, the empathy diminished, and when shown a group of starving, dying children, empathy reached close to zero. When I am stuck in traffic, masses of people keeping me from where I want to go, I want them all dead. Most people can't admit that to themselves. When someone competes with me, I want them dead. I don't care that they've had life, and I don't care if they've suffered in death. That's the dark side. That's something one could never admit, but this is why the zombie genre is so popular -- we want our masses of competition -- soulless, meaningless -- dead, but because the individuals creating this mass have less meaning to us in such massive numbers, we have less compassion and respect. I have dreams and goals. If I enter into an arrangement with another for purposes of survival unit and mating, I need to become a conquering monster, or I need to leave this other person and remain true to self. William found a way to live the dichotomy, but he ultimately suffered for it. William's wife wantred him to be ambitious and pursue the path that would make them comfortable, and yet to do that, he had to become the one who preyed on the humanity of others, when she thought he would preserve that spark of morality. This is analogous to when a man says a woman wantrs a man who can hang an arm out the window of the car, have an arm around her and drive the car all at the same time. William was caught in the trap of pleasing everyone around him, but he could never be true to self; in that, he thought his ultimate dark side, hunting party, Uber-male caveman was his true self. Just some thoughts.

Is it just me or does some of the footage seen by Williams wife on the tablet occur after that point in time? I.e. with him dragging Delores along the ground etc? Editing mistake?
@HoleDweller6 жыл бұрын
Phil Paterson We don't know when that scene takes place, only that it is prior to the reveries update, however, we do know based on William's dialogue that it isn't the first time. The only scenes we know for sure happened after her suicide are him attacking Maeve and everything that happens after he comes for Kissy a year later.

William is totally a host! Listen to his conversation with his wife, it sounds like he is admitting that she is the only one that realised. He failed her fidelity test. He also uses the same machine that the techs use on hosts to heal himself, but Emily uses bandages on him. (He knows, she doesnt) In the real world he is seen regularly holding his right forearm. The port spot. I don't think he sits down at the end of the episode to learn if he is a host or not. I think he sits down to play with his settings (like maeve did) because he is about to go and fuck shit up. He has been playing by the rules so far, but now he just wants to put the cheats on!

After watching this episode, I can't understand why the hell would William/MIB allow ANY data to be collected about him if he is not just aware, but responsible for the guest data-collection initiative. He obviously is an extremely private person (especially when it comes to his "WW time,") so why wouldn't he do something like wiping the minds of any host he comes in contact with? Or even better, have a default setting in every host to not record or log anything when they come into contact with him? I mean even with today's limited technology you can use a VPN, Tor, or at the most basic, incognito mode to ensure your shit stays private/isn't logged. Also, thanks for another thoughtful breakdown! I absolutely love all of your content and am stoked for The Well-Told Tale. I will be donating to your Go-Fund Me when I get paid on Friday. :)

Is it possible to elaborate on the Man in Black’s psyche? Is he simply apathetic to everything or is it more a masochistic drive?

I personally hope not William is not a host ethier. It's more symbolic if William a human is somewhat becoming more like a host without emotions and robotlike while the host themselves is becoming more human than the humans.

Oh my dear friend! This is the one time I really disagree with you. I don’t feel Ford created this game for William to confront his terrible behavior over the last three decades. I feel Fords only intention was to punish those that have abused his “children”. Especially after how Ford spoke to Maeve in this episode, we can see that he really wanted the hosts to be free and he saw them as his children. William did a lot of sick things to the hosts over the years and his wife was disgusted with him too.
@leridom6 жыл бұрын
I think that Ford wound up William on purpose, playing on his psychological profile, he never created any games just for him that was just feeding his ego and paranoia, deepening his commitment to his delusions. William seems convinced that Ford thinks he's as important as he thinks he himself is, but Ford never gave a crap about William other than playing him for a fool, using him to further his own agenda. Ford just wound him up and let him go, knowing William would be dependably crazy enough to stay in the park and risk his life. To what end? Any, I don't think Ford cares if William lives or dies, probably hoped he would die but unphased by him otherwise. Ford so often commented upon how every aspect of the park was controlled, obviously by him, in planning his long game he would have much more to gain from William playing cowboy rather than William being evacuated to safety where he could (if he were of sound mind) direct and aid in efforts to get the IP in Peter Abernanthy's mind and regain control of the hosts.

Arnold was withing range of Clementine, yet Arnold wasn't affected by her command. So I don't think all hosts can be controlled by Clementine. Perhaps only hosts that have not reached self awareness can be controlled.

So how does Logan get back to the real world after William ties him to a horse and leaves him at the end of series one? Can someone explain?
@InDeepGeek6 жыл бұрын
townclubber - I think the implication from when Ekecheta found him was that park management would send a buggy out for him once they realised he was in actual danger...
@townclubber6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for your reply. I love your videos. However, your explanation does n`t make sense. Surely once Logan got back ,he would`ve denounced William for leaving him for dead and told his father, James Delos, and sister what William had done to him and therefore discrediting William once and for all. I don`t think James Delos would have accepted that. We see Logan drunk at the party after his time in the park with William but no one seems to care what William had done to Logan! Or have I got the timelines confused?

It's very possible that within the realm of technology we're looking at there, that the hat could map the mind relatively quickly...so I'm not sure it would be necessary for them to be worn constantly. Maybe the original entry period is enough to get a base mind map, then when the guests go out to "get some action" so to speak, when they'd be most apt to immerse themselves in Westworld and wear the garb given, those moments full of the humans reaction and interaction to hosts and scenarios, could be mapped then as well. No need for guest to be wearing hats 24/7 as I've seen some ppl saying to shoot holes in a pretty straight forward explanatory device, ingeniously hidden in plain sight from the beginning.
@mrbz756 жыл бұрын
Terrence Bullock sure, that's why I was saying that the entry period could be enough for a baseline, then the immersion periods could get the juicer interactions, with data on what the guest truly thinks/wants and how they react and interact both consciously and unconsciously in those situations. Especially over the course of a few days. I'll say, I saw an amusing post that for the ladies, it was their parasols, as they seem to have those in abundance in the city scenes lol. It was just a minor plot nit that seemed to be being overly picked by some in response to the episode.

Very good analysis, I agree about William and his downward spiral. It seems certain he is prepared to die to end his secret Delos project. On another popular Westworld analysis channel the content creator and his followers are on a different tracking with William that I have argued against. It seems they believe William is on a path to upload his consciousness to a host version of a younger William and that eventually he and Dolores will rekindle their feelings for one another next season or whatever. Its as if he is on a redeeming arc that will be rewarded with achieving immortality because his mind is more attuned to Westworld versus the real world and he won't have the issues James Delos did with his cognitive plateau. I think this is off the range myself, especially after William kills his daughter. The whole family was infected by William's hidden darkness and now they are all dead. This guy deserves no rewarding awesome jump into a young host self and live forever with his lost love Dolores. I don't think Dolores is to fond of William anymore and perhaps they help each other get to the forge but their endgames are different. Also Ford's attempt to shake William out of himself with the digital video profile didn't work as he might have intended, because it appears William never views the profile and after his wife finds it and later hides it in her daughter's music box he definitely never views it. William's only shot at what he probably believes will help his cause in the cosmic sense is the destruction of his creation and probably his death tied -in to it.

Ever Consider Dolores is Half Dolores and Wyatt is actually the code of the "man in black"? It just occurred to me that Ford may have inserted Man in Black's profile into her. Now hows that for a brain twister? If that is the case, I hope I get some credit Mr. In Deep Geek as I've never seen that one before!

I was disappointed that James Marsden died. I kept hearing that Joy/Nolan were excited about Teddy's development this season, but I didn't see it. He went from one note to another one, but never did play a whole melody until this episode and then they killed him! A bit sad really - much like a lot of this episode... I hope Emily isn't really dead and that there's a real chance for MIB to redeem himself in the finale. And this episode also made it very difficult to call Ford evil. Like you said, this episode was tragic!

I'm thinking that the one MiB shot was not Emily, but a host clone named Grace. Bear with me for the "evidence" for this theory. It has never seemed right to me that everybody here on KZbin refers to her as Emily. In the credits for every episode since she appeared in Raj World that is the name of the character played by Katja Herbers. We got to see her as Emily in the flash backs of this episode, but we didn't see the QA neck reader telling if she was human or host in the shows current timeline. Remember that first scene with that guy she was checking out to be human, notice how she never proved herself to be human. And running away from that tiger, then getting attacked by it and washing up fairly unharmed on the Westworld shore, is that humanly possible to survive? However I do not think the host Grace know she's a host either, but rather like Bernard has been thinking she is the original human. So in all his madness MiB is right about that. He might not even been wrong on the other rambling about Ford being behind it all, like it is still like a game. In this episode we see how Ford is a master manipulator even outside the domain of the parks hosts or the mesh network system. He's also real life hacking (picked that concept up from the show Mr Robot) into Williams life. Ford knew that leaving that card with his "profile" to William would somehow get to him being punished in one way or the other. He couldn't foresee it would lead to Williams wife commiting suicide, but still he was a part of it and probably had calculated that as an possible outcome he was ok with. On another guess of mine, I think William/MiB is still a human, even if it seems he is on the brink of doubting that himself in the end of this episode. He's probably not the single most important person for Ford to get to, but he is on the path through the same kind of suffering the hosts are to become fully awake. He will end up in thesame place as them both physically and in spirit. Maybe he will be a link between the human race and the new race that will be when he goes through "the door" and finally becomes a host clone of himself. Not because he deserves it, but because it is ultimatly necessary for Ford's plan to have the new race sucessfully entering out to the real world, him with Delores which he always wanted to be with - though not by leaving the park. So what he wanted do come back to bite him like Ford predicted in this episode. Oh, and Teddy comitting suicide wasn't unexpected I think, only I thought they'd save it for the finale.
@robertrodriguez29636 жыл бұрын
I think william replaced himself, long ago, went to live with Dolores, and him and ford created the man in hat robot. Ford has been trying to "break" both man and black and Bernard by making them commit horrible acts of violence. Theory, also right as he said he belonged in Westworld (old man william) on his dead wifes bed, it flashed to young william in a house with DOlores.
@starlingwatch39216 жыл бұрын
So you're Ford, 3 years before the park opens, and you see your partner building these kick ass machines that people will pay good money to visit. And your partner says something like "Humanity will show it's ugliness to these machines." And Ford brushes it off, saying lets open the park and see what happens. And Ford and Arnold see first hand how inhuman the guests act. And Ford says, "Well, we have to keep the park open." Arnold kills himself. So Ford does a deal with the devil, Delos. He gets to keep the park open in exchange for staying away from the Project. During the next 30 years Ford sees the bottom of humanity in his own loop. It is torture to Ford. But he justifies it: They're machines and not humans. The Project proceeds to be pointless until some point. And then the Project achieves consciousness. And it starts speaking with hosts in Westworld. Around this time Lee Sizemore shows up and writes these truly depraved and disgusting narratives. Ford realizes his creation - his children - will perish if he doesn't get rid of the Forge and provide a refuge for the surviving hosts. Maybe they will even become a new species. If the above is Ford story, then why did he have the hosts kill himself?
