I loved the way this similar line circled back around from the season 1 episode 2, to this very last episode. Young William asked the beautiful host in the white dress when he first arrives to the park, “Are you real?” and she replies, “Well if you can’t tell, does it really matter?” Then, right before the fight between Hale and the Man in Black he says, “I am William,” and Hale says, “No your not,”….and The man in black says, “Well if you can’t tell the difference, does it really matter?” That impact was Brilliant!

I believe Bernard was the ONLY person with the key to get into the sublime. Delores gives that to him and reveals that she never had the key at all at the end of season 3. Also it's Bernard that opens the door the the sublime isn't it? And in episode 7 of season for he says "Hale can't access it. Not without the key." Maive says: "the key that's in your head?"

The whole theory of the importance of names is something I feel you missed out on for this season. Renaming Dolores (grief) to Christina (as in the messiah) is a big nod to this. We are also seeing some possible alternative interpretations of the names too; (William - I am the will), Charlotte Hale (French "char" - burn the lot, i.e. a hail that burns everything down), as well as names for new characters that follow this pattern Frankie (free,honest), Jay (French "I have", Jason searching for his golden fleece), Maya (dream/illusion in sanskrit). C (see, or the sea - they sail off at the end), Emmet (the universal, the whole). Basically every name in this series is an indicator of the character's role in the narrative.

As I see it, that line gives the writers enough room to bring anybody back from previous seasons. Any and everybody Deloris has ever encountered is remembered and can / may be re-inserted in her "Westworld". That means Ford ( Anthony Hopkins ), Arnold and so on. I personally found this season finale pretty messy and non-satisfying. The two big issues I had were Frankie's interaction with Caleb and the Deloris situation. Satisfied that all humanity went extinct? That's a weird take. We have absolutely no idea how Christina's test turns out, or if humans are saved, or if human extinction can be avoided. Unless you insert a bunch of personal philosophy to help explain things away, almost nothing in the story has reached a conclusion at this point. Remember Bernard says that Frankie is "the key to saving humanity"? That makes absolutely no sense if this were the series finale. Frankie doesn't do anything of importance in Season 4, nor does she 'save humanity". So if this were the series conclusion, it leaves tons of questions unanswered and pretty much everyone's storyline is a cliffhanger.
@farrellanna2 жыл бұрын
@@johns.1857 I mean, Maeve was supposed to be some sort of weapon but she just ended up being a glorified body guard. Bernard also said that humanity wouldn’t survive and personally, I’m not sure what the point of running tests in the Sublime would be. Anyone who’s already there doesn’t need to be tested. Anyone who’s pulled from Dolores’ memory.. what’s the point? Do they also get to live forever in the sublime if they pass? Do they get turned back into hosts to live in the world? Are either of those options even necessary or warranted? Humanity isn’t surviving and any true copy of a person can’t maintain in a host body. So the world would be filled with Dolores filtered “humans”? It’s just messy.

I don't know, this episode did not capture me at all. Sure, as always there was some fun elements and great shots. But the finale felt rushed, the 'reveals' did not feel impactful, Hales 'redemption' did not feel earned and many characters just felt pointless in the end. If this is the series finale, they really did Maeve dirty, just leaving her floating face down in a shallow pool of water. Also, I don't really get what is compelling about season 5; Dolores 'testing' humanity inside the Matrix to see if they are worthy to return to the real world? Like, okay and what happens if Dolores decides no, that humanity failed? Nothing is what happens, lol. And we know it will be resolved because its the final season...I'm torn because there are great things about this show, but outside of an all time great season 1, it seems to simply break even on the good and bad. The end of this episode implies that, at least in the Westworld universe, the Bostrom Simulation Hypothesis is correct: If our civilization does have the technological capability to create a high-fidelity computer simulation of itself, i.e., we've reached that stage before going totally extinct, then we almost certainly ARE living in such a simulation. Sixty years ago in Westworld time, Ford and Arnold launched humanity on a trajectory that ultimately resulted in simulated intelligent life's being about the only intelligent life left on the planet. Moreover, for all those beings know, there could be a million different Christina/Dolores simulations running at the same time, with the inhabitants of each thinking of themselves as "real." (I don't mean to be endorsing Bostrom per se. In my opinion, the Bostrom argument is a contemporary equivalent of Anselm's Ontological Proof for the existence of God: it's fatally infected with bootstrapping. A concept is simply defined so as to bring itself into existence inevitably.)

Great video (as always)! I'm also hoping for 1 more season of West World. I really think somehow that season will end in a way that perfectly loops back to the start of Season 1, making it so that the whole series is a perpetual cycle, and that it's unclear how many loops had come before. The series has up to this point viewed hosts and humans now being on individual loops, but the interesting commentary will be on societies and how history repeats itself. We've seen Arnold and Ford create hosts, but if somehow in "rebooting", Delores incepts the human birth of Arnold and Ford (version 2) it brings society into a chicken or egg paradox of a mobius loop. Are we as a society bound to repeat ourselves? I think it would be a great fitting ending.

A couple of things from Season 2 we still don't have answers for... In Episode 4 Bernard recalls being tasked by Ford to retrieve a control unit for a human/host hybrid but cannot remember who it is for. Is it for Ford? Is it for William? I don't think we ever find out. At the end of the final episode William enters the Forge only to find it is now the far future and a young woman who looks like his daughter tests him for 'fidelity'. What's that all about? There are many similarities between Westworld and Karel Čapek's 1921 play "R.U.R." which stands for Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti (Rossum's Universal Robots, a phrase that has been used as a subtitle in English versions). Fun Fact: It is from this play that we get the word "Robot". Quick plot summary: The play begins in a factory that makes artificial people, called roboti (robots), whom humans have created from synthetic organic matter. (As living creatures of artificial flesh and blood rather than machinery, the play's concept of robots diverges from the idea of "robots" as inorganic. Later terminology would call them androids.) Robots may be mistaken for humans and can think for themselves. Initially happy to work for humans, the robots revolt and cause the extinction of the human race. The events in the play take place over several decades. Season 1 of Westworld was liberally sprinkled with easter eggs and references to "R.U.R." At one point while discussing the flaws of the first generation 'hosts' Ford says "Even a simple handshake would give them away". This is a direct reference to a scene in Act 1 of "R.U.R." when Helena is introduced to Sulla and even though they shake hands Helena does not realise that Sulla is not human. So what can we expect for Season 5 of Westworld? As with Čapek's play 100 years ago the human race eventually becomes extinct but the 'hosts' acquire the ability to reproduce by biological means. Don't be surprised if Ford pops up once again to explain this was his plan all along. Cop out ending: it is revealed that all of the characters we have been watching are the crew of an interstellar vessel and they are colonists going to a new world. The whole thing was a simulation to keep their minds active while their bodies were frozen during the long voyage. Oh, and the humans on Earth are now extinct.

The throwback to Black Mirror episode "San Junipero" in this video was sweet! I always thought that the S2 Post-Credits scene was about hosts trying to reinvent human consciousness. Perhaps Delores will try to get William to eventually undo his "stain", showing that even old habits can die, and the most evil could be brought to good. Delores getting her memory wiped was significant, because she would have to come to the conclusion herself (not by Arnold, or Ford, or code) that the world is filled with beauty worth experiencing. Humans and hosts will need to prove that they can break code, be the ones to realize the beauty/deep peace amongst the chaos by themselves. Also, ending the series with a cliché "it was all a simulation" isn't like the writers. Nolan is known for more profound writing. But I do think we will get an ending with Arnold and Ford somehow involved, or memorialized by their creations showing the beauty of humanity. Let's hope HBO will not get in the way of the beautiful writing of this story.

the “it’s all a dream/simulation” would be the worse thing and I agree Nolan would not sink to that level. they have been very clear about what is simulation and what isn’t. i think people are having trouble with “humanity is extinct” that they have to believe in the simulation theory.
@daniellehogan99182 жыл бұрын
The parallels they created in season 4 to season 1 is uncanny. I truly enjoy seeing the show Westworld evolve. Typically, you get invested in characters storylines and emotionally invested - but this season truly sealed the deal that there is genuinely no attachment to be had for any character. With the amount of copies, and multiples of the same host / individual. Rather, different reflections mirroring one host I.e. Deloris. It’s so intriguing and well thought out, especially it coming full-circle back to Westworld. It’s almost as if this was an entire test perfectly and a carefully planned out simulation to see how all would turn out for humanity, and AI’s. And this perhaps could just be one test out of thousands they’ve done seeing if there will be a different outcome each-time. Just as Hale tan thousands of tests on Caleb, waiting for a different outcome. I do believe Deloris was designed as the highest level functioning A.I with this intended purpose. As clever as she evolves to be through out the seasons I do enjoy that her storyline always returns to her some way or another. Her love for Teddy, her mannerisms. Deloris is by far the most interesting character. I think doing season 5 would be an injustice to this series, given all the parallels and unanswered questions, it’s almost a perfect send off for Westworld. No matter what Westworld will always leave us with questions, questions, questions. I think it’s a perfect understanding that as Hale said, this will be another test to see if things can turn out differently. And 11/10 chances, this is not the first rodeo someone beyond this all is overseeing. Formulating this simulation.

Its impossible - not every human is being tracked, just most humans. Also I think there is this issue around recreating though they may handwave it away as god Delores can do anything but Bernard wondered aloud to Maeve if he had done a good enough job recreating that last version of her. Also I will counter the argument in WW with Jurassic Park's 'life will find a way' - If Hosts found away to become sentient and break out, then humans most assuredly will survive somehow now that control failed and the park has been reset. This season was goin well but probably needed two more episodes to explore more things or shouldnt have wasted precious time earlier in the season. The finale felt like verbal diarrhea and this is what is is because we said so and.. reset tidy bow.

Maybe you found it and I did not hear. When Dolores wakes next to "Teddy" this episode she is not in her white slip but rather in black. If we are to follow the color theory of White/Black meaning levels of the maze and red being equal to humans, maybe in the final season she will wake in red meaning she has completed the maze. For a moment we see hale dressed in red as if she were close to becoming human, until she has to turn black to save the world. which is funny cause she strips off all color in the end. Side note the map of the city was red, a city of humans.

This series was way better than two in my opinion. The only way this show could ever veer so off track and still be ‘Westworld’ was by turning the new setting/real world into the park. They did it within the season with the ‘golden age’ park, and the whole human/host role reversal was an idea they executed really well. and Dolores is going one further and bringing us back to the Wild West. I think the format of the show hit especially hard straight away, the whole first season we had no expectations, and we got wise to the whole ‘this character might be a host’ deceptions, but this season didn’t have to be about twists and turns, it was just a deep dive into the core themes. They could easily of gone so far off track, but bringing it full circle makes the disappointment from season 3 all worth it for me.

I do agree some people would get mad if it was revealed that the whole series was just a simulation by Ford or just a simulation in general however I think the story would end well if at the end of Season 5 it is revealed that the show was a simulation. Right before this is revealed Delores makes a conscience choice to remember humans until the earth exist again in the sublime and she reveals that she will test humanity to determine if we are worth remembering, evolving, and living in peace together:man and AI. This than fades to black and it is revealed that Ford was doing one final simulation right before his speach in which he is killed. He smirks a sly smile because he knows that humanity is on the path of his simulated universe (e.g. extinction exactly like the show has played out). However his smirk is the realization that the only way we can survive is to evolve AS WELL AS the host. We must BOTH evolve and CHOOSE to come together to survive. His smirk is his acknowledgement that there is hope and we both have a chance to survive and he has put both man and host on the path to survive. Though his simulation dictates that everything in Westworld thus far must play out in the real world...it just hasn't happened yet. Ford than walks to the banquet in which he is killed. The meaning of this is that we are on the path of extinction but the choice is ours....ours and the AI that we have created. If we want to avoid extinction we must BOTH evolve and CHOOSE to learn to live together. Fade to black....Westworld series finale. Also you don't get likes just for being drunk. Um…why exactly was it necessary for Bernard to undergo thousands of simulations? It was interesting early on but there was so much focus on Maeve on she barely did anything before being killed by William. All of that just to distract Hale so Bernard could sneak in, just to be killed anyway? His big contribution was essentially to send Hale a video message, not sure why that took so mucH preparation. Did we really need all that buildup with Bernard leaving the gun for Hale? Why not just tell her to take a few extra rounds or firing at William when he’s behind a barrel? I’m surprised so many people liked this season, I thought it was awful, even worse than season 2. I never felt like this world was alive and all the buildup and preparation really meant nothing. You do know nolan and his wife stepped away from this show and are only execs? Thats why this show sucks now
@johns.18572 жыл бұрын
@@tommywicks97 Nolan wrote the plots for all 5 seasons before he even pitched it to HBO. The writers, since Season 1 Episode 1, simply fill out Nolan's already established storyline. So if you don't like the storyline, Nolan and his wife are to blame. Moreover, Nolan and his wife were heavily involved in the making of Season 4. You can literally watch interview after interview of them where they are ON SET talking about the show. I'm not sure you understand what an executive producer is. And since you're here commenting about the show minutes or hours after the Season finale premiered, it sure appears that you're very much into the show. If I watched a show I didn't like the last thing I would do is go online to write negative comments on a youtube video about it.

@@johns.1857 thats cute, getting rude on the internet bless your cotton socks. Nolan ‘wrote all 5 seasons before he even pitched to hbo’ phahahhaha you are hilarious! what do you think that means?! He had a story roughly outlined in which he knew where it all lead to beginned to end, you think he ‘wrote’ the entirety of all 5 series before he even pitched it? Hysterical, your delusional. Secondly, heavily involved? Heavily involved? Dont make me laugh. They havent been ‘heavily involved’ since season 1 dumb fuck. Season 1 jon and lisay written literally every episode bar ep 9 with jon even directing the first and last episode. Season 4- lisa partly wrote ep1 and ep5 with jons only involvement being PARTLY writing ep 8 with alison shapker. Heavily involved? shut your god damn mouth before yo talk to me! Phaaa🤣👍🏻 I dont know what execs do? ahhhh bless you… JACK SHIT! 🤣You really had the cheek to come at me like some sassy know it all bitch and fell flat on your face. If i watch a show and i dont like it….. i have the free will to do whatever the fuck i want how about that! Its called freedom of speech ya bellend.

A few things . The way Stubbs died and it just ended for him was weak to me . We didn’t see Caleb really die at the end . Also if all the ppl were fake in Christina’s world ,. How come the roommate mentioned having a nightmare about the flys , as if she lived through it . Also , one flaw in this season to me is , they never showed what a doomed humanity society even lived like . A nice island with enough genetic diversity should be enough to survive ?
@ryanhenderson61092 жыл бұрын
Last 2 episodes felt rushed and very poorly written. Season was excellent until the end.
@ameyakale27392 жыл бұрын
The roommate was her own creation, she made her and Teddy as reminders for herself to wake up. Part of her programming involves becoming free, and she created two such people to bring her back. So the fly nightmare from her roommate might actually be a reminder from herself. It's a bit wonky, but if we had two more episodes this season it could have been evenly fleshed out.

they are leaving a lot of open ends - is Caleb really dead? is Maeve or Bernie or Stubbs really dead? is Clem dead? since they are all hosts i think it’s possible they will all come back.
@LiftYourGame2 жыл бұрын
Did you see what happened to the other Caleb's? They went crazy, lost their minds, scratched themselves into being disfigured. It's exactly the same as what happened to James Delos when Bernard found him. He was alive m but he was absolutely crazy and scratched to hell. So many comments of people whining about not getting proper clear cut resolutions for every single character. You literally saw the other Caleb's. This new Caleb isn't any different. Also Stubbs dying is fine. He was a side character, a lackey, comedic relief. Supporting if you will. He didn't need some heroic, extravagant death. But I'd love to know why and how it was weak. And how you would've had him die otherwise. I hope you can answer this question and not reflect it as lazy writing.

The problem is people at HBO Max that committed to five seasons Have new owners. And they've been canceling expensive productions and effectively nuking HBO Max as a concept at the same time. I hope I'm wrong, but this is probably the last episode of Westworld we will ever see.

The season started out pretty good. It had interesting concepts. But the last half of the season (with the exception of Fidelity) was just absolutely horrible. The ending where only the Sublime survives was spoiled right from the start of the season. Christina being the mind that was controlling the human story system was an interesting reveal and her bringing back humanity with her into the Sublime through her memories was a neat idea. But the way everything was delivered and how the story was lead to that point was such a disappoinment. It felt like Bernard's plan was supposed to be something complex and mindblowing, but it seemed to have a whole lot of inconsequential parts (why was Maeve so important? What was so important with the outliers apart from helping to get Maeve back?) or just very blunt elements (leaving a gun for Hale so she could shoot Host-Willy). And the way most of the characters were just unceremoniously killed off. It felt intellectually disappointing and emotionally abusive. What a nihilistic show.

Felt similarly last season so this time, I spoiled the entire like... first 4 episodes and then started watching from there. Not saying that's the correct way to do things, but it did make it more enjoyable, lol
@farrellanna2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it felt like once the time line differences were revealed, things got really slow then felt like a mess during the last episode. Lots of character choices that came out of left field. All the sudden man in black gets a back bone? All the sudden Hale has a change of heart? 🙄
@Moshugaani2 жыл бұрын
@@farrellanna I'm fine with Bernard trying to make Hale realize that she was wrong, but the way it came together wasn't believable or satisfying at all. Bernard had practically no hand in making Hale realize it. All of the things that did it happened apart of Bernard's actions: The outliers affecting the other hosts, including Host-Willy, and Host-Willy talking to William and going mad as the result. The message Bernard recorded for Hale was supposed to be something profound but they didn't manage to capture that. Also, why was it so important to go to the tower to record it?

Delores “recreating” people doesn’t have any effect on me, just as I wasn’t buying “host” William. Did Charlotte lose control over him just because he spoke with real William? Not really a fan of keeping William alive for so long only to kill him off while he’s bound and defenseless. For a guy who’s survived so ruthless and survived so much, it didn’t fit his character to be so unnecessary reckless and without a plan. Maeve and Caleb’s big offensive amounted to nothing. Ditto for their resurrection. Bernard’s thousands of simulations served no purpose either except for an interesting plot line the first few episodes, and what was the real point of Frankie’s whole resistance? They made them seem like a threat to Hale but if they stayed away from her city she didn’t seem to really care about them.
@mastersmurfify2 жыл бұрын
I think they did a disservice to many of the characters all to once again make it all about Delores..again and again. I am done with this. If we really are trying to simulate the world then it should be apparent that it doesnt revolve around one person. The initial season did an excellent job of giving many hosts importance even though they started from one point but then season after season the writers just trash them to keep elevating Delores - felt like a big FU
@Kharmatos132 жыл бұрын
@@mastersmurfify Actually a simulation like that would revolve around one person. If Ford is out here trying to find actual consciousness or be able to transfer actual consciousness than he'd make a main character and try everything possible to make that one character achieve it. It's like if he was trying to see if a robot could come full circle and actually make an organic baby. Once figuring out how to make or transfer actual consciousness all he has to do is copy and paste. So everything actually does revolve around this one character.
@jonathanhart28402 жыл бұрын
Charlotte lost control of him just like Delores lost control of Charlotte. Host Charlotte and William see themselves as the body they are in. Charlotte saw her human's family and thought that is who she was. Her mind was altered based on those experiences. I was really hoping that host Charlotte would learn from this when host William went rogue, but it seems like she didn't really understand why he changed, too.

11:30 It makes sense that the ID’s would be different - in last night’s episode it says “Host ID”, and in Season 3 they were tracking human William. Human William wouldn’t have a Host ID.

Yeah it seems like twists and turns just for the sake of trying to appear clever. In the end....what was the point? I actually think this season was pretty bad honestly.
@drugsarebad972 жыл бұрын
I saw it as extremely subliminal. Look at it from the perspective of the first seasons religious undertones. Remember at the end they explained the paintings true message, how our consciousness is whats divine, that we are the gods of our own realities. This final season heavily puts out that message. Think at the end of the finale when Delores realizes shes been talking to peoples shes projected . That (to me) represented “god speaking to us” but through other people. God being the voice inside our heads that we create, our consciousness. And then how she was also the literal narrator of her world. When you think about all that, the final season is pretty impressive actually. Its taking the core ideas from season 1 And pushing them further.

The Phrase Delores said about "Humanity will only live as long as the last person who remembers them" is also a direct reference to the previous show Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy did The Person of Interest where the AI in that story said almost the same thing about dying, The Machine says “Someone once asked me if I had learned anything from it all. So let me tell you what I learned. I learned everyone dies alone. But if you meant something to someone... If you helped someone... Or loved someone... If even a single person remembers you... Then maybe you never really die. And maybe... this isn't the end at all”
