Got my Xperia 1 last week and do far very impressed, loving that 21.9 aspect ratio,and the screen is beautiful.camera overall Very good video ok in both 4k and 1080p , I find if you switch 4k file format to H.265 HEVC you get smooth stabilisation and better picture.also you need to turn HDR mode on manually.i find the Xperia 1 pictures more natural then the S10 .I think Sony Will be realising firmware updates shortly to address minor niggles.

The 4K video recording looks very smooth in this video. Some people were complaining about the stabilisation while recording a 4K video, but I've found out that if you switch the 4K file format to H.265 HEVC, you get smoother stabilisation 'n better picture. I think the Xperia 1's pictures are more natural than the Samsung Galaxy S10's. I don't own the Xperia 1 yet, although it'll probably be my next phone, that's what I think after what I've seen. I'm sure that Sony will be releasing software updates shortly to fix any bugs.

Jeeze i thought at 4:58 the camera was capturing a nuke going off... Then i realized you put a transition in 😂 the cinema pro is absolutely stunning looking. Like i saw that and my mouth just dropped with the amount of detail and depth the camera puts out

Hi Dave. I hope your staying well and safe! Hope your back on youtube very soon for more phone camera video tests and reviews etc! I had the first Covid-19 vaccine in early March and it's that one that's causing the blood clots so it's worrying but it'll be ok. Very nice front facing camera video where the tress look natural and true to colour and even clouds looked good. Rear camera footage looked nice and cinematic looked nice and the wobble in I saw isn't too bad as I've seen worst. Be nice to use phone as my ps4 controller as I do like that thought. Or even connect it up to ps5 in future. Just wondering if phone can do remote play with ps4 Pro and play ps4 games on phone? Autofocus was smooth I thought a bit slow but but not much as that wouldn't bother me. Does phone come in 128 GB model with expandable storage? Has there been any updates to video since this video? I think this is pretty awesome for being the quality present on a phone. I really hope that Sony sets the new standard for where we eventually end up with regard to video quality specifications on our smart phone devices. I am not a big fan of the phone overall, but a phone is what I usually have on me when, “the moment happens.” Thanks for the demonstration of the product. I appreciate the effort.

There is a lot to like about this camera, for starters it doesnt unnaturally oversaturate the colours like the competition does, and gives sharp videos from all the cameras, but you have to play with it to get the most out of it. For example, recording the 4k30 in h265 codec(can be manually adjusted) gives a lot better image stabilization and uses a lot less memory. The 21:9 might be the next big aspect ratio for the 4k tvs, so You could get the full screen used with the cinemapro. On the other hand, overheating has been a common problem with xperia phones since the original xperia z came out in 2013. My xz3 doesnt overheat that much, but tends to get hot from time to time. I would say xperia 1 is a worthy upgrade, just not yet. When the price is right, I will buy it though.

Got the xperia 1. The night shots of my xz2 premium are better. I wish it had more megapixel cameras. I like it for the rest. I like the 21:9 aspect ratio as well.

Frame drops are dissappointing. But do you checked that without gimbal? I record some videos wiyh my gimbal, and in some of them the frames look not good as my videos without gimbal. It could be gimbal app issue. Just a tought. ascept ration is great on this phone though.

The skipped frames are the same with and without a gimbal. It only happens using the stock app in 4K and is just due to poor software and power optimisation - the phone is more than capable as demonstrated by the Cinema Pro application.

Yes this is with the latest update you mentioned, still needs some work to be honest but the Cinema Pro app helps with 4K video 👍

Hi there They did push out s firmware update a few months back but the choppy 4K video and over heating still remains a problem. I can't recommend it on this basis TBH, such a shame as it's so capable otherwise. My choice would be the Galaxy Note 10 , Galaxy S10+ or a OnePlus 7 Pro running the GCAM mod (basically turns it into a camera and video powerhouse) if you're looking for great photo and video 👍 P.S. Yes, there's some amazing places to record here in Wales! Diolch yn Fawr!

Yes, there's a 'Grab' button at the bottom right corner of the viewfinder in the Cinema Pro app which allows you to take a picture of the scene - but this can only be done when not recording video 👍

Yes, the EIS can be disabled in the camera settings menu 👍

No, the stabilisation can be toggled on or off on the camera settings menu for both the stock camera app and Cinema Pro. This removes the crop created by the EIS and allows the use of a gimbal for better stabilisation 👍

Having used both, I'd take the S10 Plus anyday - Xperia 1 looks and feels great, works well and has a decent camera. But the S10 Plus is an overall better phone and a far better imaging device IMO 👍

Still images are good, but lag behind the class best - the stock camera app is badly executed and needs some work IMO. Once I've taken a few more images I'll be putting them in a Google Photos folded to share. I hear you on the video side of things, my DSLR shoots superb video but it's not always practical. A lot of people value good video on a smartphone so these tests are for them 👍

They may well have sorted on other phones, but I'm absolutely serious - couldn't believe it at first but after replicating the issue several times I know there's an issue. It's only software related though, the SD855 is really capable so I'm sure Sony should be able to sort it 👍

No, just a mini tripod to keep the phone at a comfortable distance when recording 👍 all the stabilisation is being done by the the phone itself

It's fair, but using it at 4K resolution does drain the battery very quickly - I saw it lose 20% battery in an hour with just casual use. Not good but not unexpected either as a 4K display is pushing a hell of a lot of pixels. Better to run it at 1080p as it really isn't that noticeable anyway 👍

How did you choose the resolution ? There is no settings to do that

Go into display > image quality > standard mode This only uses 4K for content which is native such as Netflix, KZbin, Amazon and also the Albums app.. Everything else runs at 2/3 of the panel resolution. This happens in either mode but I found there was significant battery drain when using the 4K Creator Mode, so I switched it off

That's true. It's like the software and hardware were designed at a wine tasting evening or something, it just feels very rough around the edges. Looks great and has a superb display, but there's so many frustrating things about the phone that I just can't recommend it to anyone right now

Using XZ Premium now. It's been great overall, but showing it's age. Half the photos are meh, video is barely usable, screen doesn't seem great anymore when compared with new phones, and the brick with bezels design is just embarrassing now. And the "niggles" as people are calling them, never got fixed. There's a slight warping on all images, only noticeable if there are straight lines in the picture. The video stabilization is bad. Low light is bad. The sky is always blown out, unless you focus on it then everything else is black. So to see literally all those issues returning on the xperia 1, it's a no-go. I love the idea of a professional film making phone, but poor execution.

Oh that sucks..I'm still on the fence with this phone to be honest, thought it was going to be excellent but it's kind of a love/hate thing so far. I'll see if some updates can cure the issues and I'll do an updated video if this is the case. I appreciate you watching, thank you 👍

Apparently this was improved somewhat with a later software update, however, I no longer have the device to be able to verify this and I know one of my other creator friends said the video was still choppy in 4K even after the update. If it's good Android video you're after, a Galaxy S10 is a much better option

While I partially agree ,I believe a phones camera is only as good as the person behind it and this phone is aimed at content creators not your average iPhone Samsung user who shoots on auto mode with unrealistic colours then calls it a day.Search for" Btekt" on KZbin to see how a professional handles it with a little more effort..

This is why I made further videos using the Cinema Pro app to show what the phone can really do. I've seen Btekt's videos and they're great. You're absolutely correct though, a phones camera (or any camera) is nothing without the imagination of the person behind it 👍

No stabilisation at 4K, HDR is poor on highlights, dropping frames. Small things like no switching to wide angle while filming... Enough for me to say this isnt flagship worthy.. And that comes from a Sony FANBOY..

There's EIS on the stock camera app for 4K, but the video is so bad using that it is quite literally unusable. Agreed on your points regarding the HDR and dropped frames, although I just left the Cinema Pro app at 100 ISO and auto white balance, with some playing around the highlights may be able to be reined in a bit, but that's a test for another day. I'm not quite sure what Sony was thinking here, but this handset had been such a disappointment so far - it's no wonder they're in the place they are in regards to smartphones. What a huge shame, I mean that in a genuine way. Appreciate you watching, just sorry it isn't what you may have been expecting

I still have the XZp and I daresay the Xperia 1 has the worst camera among the flagships in 2018 and 2019. Poor dynamic range, poor low light performance, poor sharpening processing, no OIS, overheating, no RAW etc.... Also underwhelming battery capacity and performance. I will give this a skip to either LG or OP+....unbelievable Sony

Dude, it has OIS, it just doesn't gell well coemtikes when EIS and it is active, usually turning Steady Shot off would help pis do its normal job. Or just use basic Steady shot and Sony's best in business EIS will do its job. Battery, low capacity, yes, but Sony is always famous for its light batt consumption software. Really, nothing bad from it.

Light battery consumption software?? Sorry, this is wrong. This phone can chew through 20% battery in an hour doing not much at all. The stabilisation is poor when switched off, good when it's on but it's of no use when the phone begins to overheat after just THREE MINUTES of 4K video recording. When this happens the EIS is deactivated and the phone falls to pieces. Honestly, biggest disappointment of 2019 so far - what a shame

Get yourself a OnePlus 7 Pro, Galaxy S10e or even a Note 9 from last year, all brilliant phones which do things far better than the Sony. I'm so disappointed I feel quite angry about it - how can the biggest supplier of optics to some of the best smartphones not get its own business in order on its own phone? Defies belief!

@@DaveWestMedia I have an a6000 and have been using Sony since 2012's Xperia U. I'm a big fan of Sony. But tbh they either step up their mobile game or better off focussing on other products. That's unbelievable. Granted their mobile software is one of the best but so are the OP and LG for example. Xperia phones are/were plagued by overheating, poor cameras and bad battery life for 5 generations now (the last good one was Z3). The 4k screen is a gimmick tbh, I can't tell 1440 from 4k on my XZp. After 8 years, I guess I'll try another brand. Sorry Sony.
