Can I just say THANK YOU for not stuffing this video full of loud, obnoxious music? The enjoyment of watching someone who knows what they're doing is always delightful and it always detracts from the video to have annoying, obnoxious music blaring during the fast forwards and non speaking scenes.

Nice one! Thanks for sharing your errors as well as your successes, we all benefit:). For lost wax casting I melt bees wax and pine resin together(best smell everrr) to make the bees wax harder when it cools.. It struck me that using them melted together for this job might work too. All the best Lee

Great job. I am going to make these for me and for my wife. We do medieval living history and this is perfect for our use. Just a thought but I plan to leave the grain used for shaping inside when I wax the outside and use a heat gun to help the leather pull the wax into for a boiled effect. I plan to use brewer's pitch on the inside as it is more durable and has a higher melting temp than the beeswax.

Nice video. Down to earth, and very British.😅 A nice change from overentusiastic yanks, who knows it all😂 Like the simpel design without unnecesseary stitching. However I would have rounded the corner of the fold (opposide the opening), to awoid the "dip".

Cuir Bouilli maybe a thought. Make a form with knives and a rasp. Stretch boiled leather over the form and clamp in place. After it has cooled remove the form. Brush in beeswax/ethanol to water proof interior and resin for the perimeter. Join halves with copper rivets and stitch together the halves in between the rivets and the void of the canteen. I don't know if I have explained that well.

I very much enjoyed your video. I have never seen one of these made before. I was just wondering wouldn’t it be possible to put a bag from say a camelbak inside before folding it over and stitching it up? The off brand bladders come in many different sizes. If you use one it would eliminate the possibility of a leak. Also it would allow you to fill it with air instead of grain for expanding it. When done cut off the end of the bladder flush with the spout. Stick a cork in and your done. Of course you would need to glue the bladder to the leather before sealing it up. But to me I think it would work much better. Or am I completely missing the point and this video is meant to show how they where made long ago? Regardless I really enjoyed watching your video. It was very interesting and informative. It’s unfortunate you overheated the was causing a bit of damage to your bottle. But you learn more from a mistake then you do from an accomplishment. Had that not happened I would not have known it was possible to overheat the leather with wax. I would have thought the hatter the better. Thank you for posting and sharing what you have learned. Much respect.
@WildGingerBruce
@WildGingerBruce 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you could line it with plastic like a camelbak, but then it would just be a perfectly useable water carrier covered in leather, which also makes it too easy this was just a play with traditional leather bushcraft bottle. Its still watertight after all these years. Even if i did mess it up and burn the leather 🤣🤣

Is it possible to soften or make into liquid the pine resin using a solvent like ethanol that would evaporate and leave the pine resin behind? also.... won't the pine resin flavor the water?
@WildGingerBruce
@WildGingerBruce 7 жыл бұрын
+Paul N yes you can thin down pine resin with Vasaline, petroleum jelly, I found this out after, it also makes the resin more flexible so it won't crack The water is never in the bottle very long and the taint will go after a few uses Atb Bruce

Not sure how I feel about using rice over popcorn kernels. Moist leather packed with rice seems like you could have some food residue smeared on the inside of your vessel. Probably gets sealed in with wax but still think popcorns the way to go.

Do you have gourd canteens in the U.K? Our Confederate soldiers often carried gourd canteens. Some were grown in forms that the gourd expanded into to making it rounded with flat sides.
@WildGingerBruce

yes i have made a gourd canteen in the past , but it is very hard to dry them quickly , due to the lack of sun in the uk . so a few of them always go mouldy.

I really love the video!!!! Im sorry if I missed this but what glue did you end up using to seal up the edges?
@stephengent9974
@stephengent9974 4 жыл бұрын
You really only need to wet the leather until bubbles stop rising. The leather is then soaked. Even that is really not necessary. Just run it under a tap on both sides. That is fine in my experience. I am going to try making one myself.

Taking into account the materials, process, and fact it works... I reckon that's a serious success... What some might see as issues I just see as patination and distressed character.
