I employ Gamsol for wet mounting and have experimented with Aztek Mylar, Dura lar, and Swiss-made Folex. All three options have proven effective, with Folex offering custom sizes in their Swiss-produced Mylar.

I cant speak to drum scanning but wet mounting on my Epson flatbed has been a game changer. I avoided it for a long time because of the expense and what I thought would be a mess working with the fluid. Turns out it's a much more enjoyable, faster, easier way to scan and the results are better than the epson holders. With medium format film you can scan so many more frames at once. Great tip on the fluid I've wondered about this myself.

I've also had good experiences with Gamsol as a mounting fluid. I was a bit skeptical at first and wanted to get a set of all Kami stuff but I'm always up for an experiment. The lack of odour was a big plus. The tape I use is a bit different, It's Tesa 4124 rather than 4104. I never tried anything else and a couple roles of this stuff came with the scanner when I bought it. It does a fine job of not leaving excessive residue on either drum or film and handles fluid well enough to not be a concern. It's a clear tape, I can see how a coloured tape would help in making it easier to align properly. To me the biggest perk of the Kami stuff is the bottles and colour agents it ships with. I use generic cheap mylar, I have not compared it to anything else so I can't say if this is recommended.

Comecei a trabalhar com um scanner de tambor em 1979,um Crosfield Magnascan 460, na época era o único na península Ibérica e dos poucos no mundo, para eliminar os anéis de Newton um pó muito fino, que requeria muita perícia, e o húmido que era parafina líquida, folha de poliéster com 0,1 de espessura e fita cola (tape) para fixar e selar a montagem, usei esta técnica até 2010 quando a digitalização de diapositivos ou negativos ficou obsoleta, foram trinta anos a usar em vários modelos de scanner de tambor este método barato e eficiente, parafina líquida, folhas de poliéster e tape, obrigado pelo vídeo o qual me fez recordar os meus melhores anos da minha vida, como operador de scanner, fico muito feliz por saber que essa arte que tanto amei ainda subsiste. Good to now! I would rather buy the more expensive "Wundbenzin" in a pharmacy, as it should be purer/with less unwanted ingredients than the stuff for technical use.

Not doing drum scans (for many reasons ;-)), but thinking about wet-mounting for camera scanning. I highly appreciate the information about the "secret" ingredients of the wet mounting fluid! As it seems Gamsol is not sold here in Germany, but with the knowledge about Naphtha I should be able to find a suitable solution (pun intended ;-)).

if gamsol is not easily accesible for you and if it is 100% naphta why not just go to the pharmacy next door and buy medical naphta?! that is even cheaper as gamsol. you can buy a little, but also 5liter cans. I have used it for many years as well as tesa 4104 - thanks tony for reassuring that I was on the right track - when I was still drumscanning ;-)
