Nice video. I love the Galloway hills and can’t wait to visit again later in the year.

Thanks very much! I was very nearly down there again last weekend, but settled on a trip to Rannoch moor instead. Bright sunshine and a flat calm didn't make for the best fishing early on, but the surroundings were amazing, complete with a good coating of fresh snow on the mountains. I do like that little window between the ice melting and some very hungry midges waking up 😁

Thanks for watching. If I do this one again I'll probably make it a 3 day trip and get more actual fishing done!

Beautiful young trout there Doug, well done. No sign of midge yet thank goodness, just peace in abundance. Thanks for posting.

Hi Ash, The fishing just showed how out of practice I am with a fly rod! As for the midges, I think they'd have been shot down by the rain, certainly later on! There were a few around earlier but I think these were the harmless males rather than bloodthirsty females😊

It just shows that I need to practice my fly fishing - a lot! Galloway is a lovely area to visit, but does look much nicer when it's warm and sunny 😁

Thanks! I'm hoping to make a few more freshwater videos over the year, although saltwater is still my favourite style of fishing.

Cheers - it's a lovely place to visit, but easier going when the sun is shining I think. I'm well out of practice with the fly too, which is just another excuse for a return trip!

First non sea fishing video I've watched, great, managed to launch at etive with my car few weeks ago, no problem but no weed either 😊🚗

Glad to hear you got afloat and I hope you'd a decent day on Etive 👍. It's a confidence thing really, and gets much easier once you've done it a few times and figure out how your setup performs. The weed problem happens occasionally with onshore gales in the autumn and winter, but it rarely hangs around too long.

Hopefully the longer days will encourage me! I'm gradually learning how to plan some of the basic shots a bit better - it's awful easy to shoot a load of video and then realise you can't quite string it all together into a decent story. I've got quite a lot of half-finished videos cluttering up my hard drive!

Great film Doug. Can I ask what lures you use on your spinning set up? Are they just Mepps-type things and if so what size? I'd like to give this a try on some of the tarns of the Lake District. Many thanks, Chris

Hi Chris - My go-to is a Mepps size 0 in either gold or silver, but I think the ones in this video were a size 1, just to make a little more headway against the wind. I also use size 00 sometimes, but that would be more for casting upstream on small rivers and the like. I've acquired a size 2 this year, mainly to see if it helps increase average size any but I haven't tried it yet. In this video I think I'm using 3lb mono and you do need to keep the gear fairly light in order to hit any distance with wee lures. Depth of water is also a consideration, as you'll find some areas are just too shallow to fish easily with a metal lure. Mepps aren't the only game in town, but the cheaper spinners can put a lot of twist in your line and aren't worth the hassle. Good luck!

4 those not in the know, it would b nice if u could name the lochs, or a mite of missed that ???

Hi Stephen, I think I did say early on in the video that I wasn't going to name them. I will name places, or sometimes individual marks, but normally only if they're already well known. Either that, or they're so remote that very few people will find them and the ones that do are unlikely to trash them. These lochs are just a bit too accessible for me to be comfortable being specific about where they are.
