Great work and perfect explanation. In the very past we did a lot of wet sanding and it was more common than dry sanding. Now it has changed to the opposit. I still like wet sanding exactly for the same reasons you have explained. Greetings from Germany

Started wet sanding instead of dry & IMO it's a game changer. Finish is incomparable & cost wise, you're using fractions of the amount of paper compared to dry sanding. You can get a finish that really pings - makes a huge difference to the final product.

@JakesShop~~ Back in the day, my Dad and I restored a 1970 Ford Torino Cobra with a 429 Super Cobra Jet Engine, as my first car. Believe it or not, I still own it! We started working on it when I was 14 years old and finished it just after I got my driver's license when I turned 16 yrs old. We WET SANDED 100% of the car by hand up, NO BLOCKS USED. My Dad is a perfectionist and he truly wanted me to learn how to "sand by feel". When he first started teaching me, he actually had me keep my eyes closed, so I would focus on the "feel" of the car's body shape as I sanded and become intuitive about keeping the surface of the paper & car wet at all times. Mind you, it was an excellent education, but it did spark some "debate" between the two of us while we worked!! LOL!! The bulk of the Wet Sanding occurred over the winter months in Iowa in our 2 car garage with a kerosene furnace. It would be -20 to -30 degrees out, and my Dad and I were out in that garage for hours every night wet sanding!! BURRRR!!! One huge benefit of Wet Sanding is not having to deal with the massive amount of dust you create with dry sanding. We started at #220 grit, then #320, then #400 and finally #600 Grit...all of this was done on the final primer coat. We used a "guide coat" applied with a sponge, similar to the one you used, to spot imperfections. Yes, it was a ton of work, and wet sanding in the winter was no easy task, but it was SO WORTH IT!! My uncle owned a body shop in Northern Iowa and came to our house to paint the car when it was ready. OMG......It turned out 100% flawless, an absolute mirror level finish on the body of the car and of course, the "Shaker Hood" was done to specifications in a Matte Black Finish. I know the technology of car paints have advanced significantly over the years, but I still believe that WET SANDING is far superior in terms of final finish than any other method, hands down! It's a MUST DO, especially on Classic Cars and Muscle Cars! My Dad always told me: "If you are going to do something, DO IT RIGHT, or don't do it at all". Side note: After 8 weeks of driving the Cobra, I managed to wear down the back tires from drag racing everyone who challenged me! That dual positraction was a BLAST!! HAHAHAHA! My Dad was not too happy with me, but he was a Drag Boat Racer and had been taking me to drag races and stock car races every weekend in the summers, since I was 6 months old. I told him "What did you expect Dad? Racing's in my blood!" LOL!! ;-). Great video Jake! ~~Christy~~

good video jake I also prefer wet sanding and as for the mess it washes off easily with no huge cloud of dust win win to me. last time I wet sanded I used a paint stick with paper raped around it to get in tight areas works good hard block in large flat areas. really shows the imperfections in the panels I hope to get back on my car soon

The total number of sanding to get the whole car done is insane ! Imagine from the very first time you sand down the old paint, rust etc, to the very last one... there are so many steps.. someone tell me it´s less than 15 (bare in mind you also need do the filler and redos)

Nice video. I copied your basic spray booth design, but used the green filters filled with nylon/grp green sticky matting. The fan sucked loads of little fibres/hairs out that messed up the paint job. Wondering what filters you used? Thanks.

After I spray my 3 to Four coats of primer surfacer,I use left over base coat mix 1 part paint to 5 parts thinner and fog coat the whole car,works well for wet sanding.5 to 1 mixture for the base keeps ur sandpaper from clogging up.

Nice bro. Question: I’m wet sanding a Nova hood. Seems like every time I san, spray it off and it’s dry, I see line scratches. Wet sanding with 320
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
Derrick Gates. If you look close enough you’ll still see sand scratches even after using a guild coat with 400. Read your sealer and see that it recommends. Mine was 400. Wet sanding leaves deeper scratches then dry sanding but most guys like to go to at least 400 before spraying sealer and then paint. I’d wet sand with at least 400. Some guys say dry sanding to 320 is safe if your using a sealer but I wasn’t willing to risk it. :). Hope that helps.

Jakes Shop cool man thanks for the advice. I guess it would help to read the directions on the primer

Jake, you had mentioned breaking through the primer, do you depend on the sealer for adhesion over bear metal.
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
Terry Hudspeth most of the higher end paints stick fine to bare metal. But you need to verify and read on them. I sealed my car just before paint. Which is what most higher end paint jobs do. It makes sure to fill in 400grit sand scratches and gives an excellent substrate for adhesion of paint and helps even out the color. Dark sealer for dark paint and light sealer for lighter paint. Hope that helps.
@OCT5664 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I will be laying down house of color black on a large car from the 40s and I do have a couple of areas where I’ve sanded through on a ridge or three. I was hopeful sealer would cover those areas
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
Terry Hudspeth sealer will cover the bare metal no problem. Most all sealers are designed to stick/etch to bare metal but read on the product to verify. I know the transtar stuff I used does.

When sanding to prep car for the final paint is it normal to sand down to metal in certain areas???
@JakesShop2 жыл бұрын
It does happen. If you barely break through and it’s not a high spot your ok. But make sure your sealer or base is direct to metal. Good rule of thumb anyway

Jakes Shop Hello mate... nice video. I've Just finished priming my van door...rubbed it down with 120 grit dry paper....its all I had... and it's also my first bodywork job...so please dont shout at me lol... having watched your video I've decided to wet sand it ...after all the work that went into this door it deserves to be finished properly. I was looking at 1200 grit wet and dry thinking it had to be as high grit as possible ...but you used 400 grit ... Is 400 a high enough grit then ? Thank you
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
Supernube you don’t want it to be too high. Too fine of sand paper has a chance to cause the paint to not be able to stick. I used a sealer which will hide micro scratches. Dry sand 400 is good for most sealers. The goal is to go fine enough that sanding scratches won’t show through your paint. Keep in mind. Dry sanding is like 500+ wet sanding. Wet sanding leaves deeper scratches because it’s so clean and keeps the paper so sharp. But wet sanding is nice because your paper last so much longer.

@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
I'm sanding a UPOL 2k primer. I used it on bare metal by thinning it after proper bare metal prep methods. Then used it as a high build primer by not thinning it. Which it says you can do and it works well for me. Final sand was a wet sand with 500. Followed that up with a Transtar sealer just before base coat.

nasir mustafa it’s a 2k primer. Basically UPol brand primer. It’s a 4 to 1 activated primer and I only thinned it by about 5% so it laid down more even. Once it’s completely cured and dry. I like to wait a day or so before sanding it.

NOOOO DRY SANDING makes more of a mess, paint dust everywhere and up the wazoo. It's easy to pressure wash a cement floor but paint dust sticks everywhere. Great vid though. I've done around 13 cars and the first half dozen I DIDN'T GUIDECOAT and it showed. Like Jake say, if you keep sanding lightly until the guide coat is gone, then it is as flat as glass
