Ever wondered what the action is like up-close on the bow of a 100 footer when the breeze is on?
At the 2024 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Sardinia the Mistral had played havoc with the event, blowing out all but two days of racing. On the final day of the regatta the Race Committee saw a small window in the Mistral’s onslaught and sent the fleet out early for the scheduled coastal race, with breezes gusting over 20 knots.
Seng Huang Lee’s SHK Scallywag relishes those conditions. So we took the opportunity to ask skipper David Witt if their crew members would take our GoPro cameras along for the race. Generously, not only did the Scallywag team agree, but they swapped the cameras across the bow team. The result, as you can see from this short compilation video, is spectacular.
A big thank you to David Witt for agreeing to have cameras on board and to crew member Nick Crones for organising the ‘videographers’ and the camera switches. Major props to the bow team too, Ben Piggot, Nick Meyer and Scott Salter who were the lead actors in this all-action show.
If you didn’t already have respect for the extraordinary skill, agility and tenacity of those at the sharp end of a 100 footer, this video will put that straight!
