I think it's incredibly important not to underestimate having the knowledge and skills to do things the "old way". Practicing the old ways of bushcraft can save lives. No single person can prepare for EVERY situation. Most of the time, folks aren't preparing to get lost, stuck or even "medically stranded" (which is a HUGE possibility itself that should never be overlooked). On any given day, ppl don't leave their homes carrying everything they need to wait for a rescue or make their way to a safe spot to be found, esp on their person. They aren't prepared to be immobilized, separated from their vehicle or possibly be forced to abandon it. You can only truly prepare for so much. The whole idea behind learning and practicing most basic bushcraft skills is so that you can be ready for those times which you cannot anticipate or prepare for. All that being said, when practicing the craft, we definitely shouldn't be out there destroying our forests. Playing in the woods is one thing, and I totally agree that when doing so, exercising discretion and respect for the forest should be paramount. Proactively preparing with the knowledge to survive a worst case scenario is a whole different ball game. Hopefully, most of us will never have to depend on those skills to save our lives... 😬

One of the things I hate most on KZbin, is the total disregard for the like button. When a channel has great content and is marvelously done, please take time to give them credit for their hard work.
@theresahaines2647

You have to understand, KZbin has the ability to withdraw your like of a video. KZbin wants to control how many likes a KZbinr should get. It’s all about the payout. If a KZbinr gets a lot of likes, then it means more of a payout to that KZbinr. I’ve liked many videos only to have KZbin withdraw that like. It’s been going on for years and it’s not going to change.

It's too bad about your pack. I have owned the same exact one for 2 years and have used it everytime I've gone out o trail since without fail or any kind of tearing. My only 2 complaints about the pack is there is no separate compartment at the bottom and mine has begun to get some sun fade. Otherwise it's fantastic. Carries weight well and very comfortable. Also love that it has pass through pockets on the side so I can slide my trekking poles through or a flyrod.

I like the modern bushcraft channel idea. I never enter the woods without two bic lighters, 50 feet of cord, a small lightweight knife, a few wax candles, a couple Mylar sheets, 9mm, plus whatever gear I think is needed for the setting. I enjoy making rope from twine and making fire by friction, but I don’t want to waste time if I don’t have to in a real situation. I have to believe the channels that demonstrate old world skills have backups to their backups. I look forward to another series from you!

Luke👍👍 Nice misty, foggy mountain forest camp. I know you were testing the tent so no tarp overhead, but, that's my favorite way to set up. Just a great way to camp, cozy, convenient and protected. The sounds and scents of rain in the forest is hard to beat and when under a tarp it's especially good. Some people go out in the wild with reckless abandon, sometimes they don't come back. Being scared is one thing, being foolish is something else, always carry protection and know how to use it. Yep, this was a good one, fire, food and chat, thanks for the work and trip. Well done. See ya next time.

Hi Luke I really enjoy your outdoor camping adventures. You said in a video last year that you should enjoy life now. I know you enjoy the solitude of the forest. I feel the same way about the beach and riding my bike. I have a hot tub in my backyard and I just sit in the warm water listening to the birds and watching the clouds go by. We live close to the beach so we get those warm gulf breezes. I’m 68 and do more outside now than when I was younger. I appreciate everyday. Keep your inspiring videos coming. Thank you.

Hi Luke, another great episode. Your dedication to showing us the scene and the scenery is really appreciated. I love the sound of rain and thunder. I think that tent would be ideal for festival or day trippers (quick set-up, light, quick break-down). I must say tho, that it grieves me how kids now bring a new tent, sleeping bags, gear etc to a festival and just leave it all there after them. It would be great if they brought it all to a bring centre and donated it all to homeless charities etc.

I agree with you in not cutting down trees. But some of those teach life safing lessons. Like if you get lost or separated from your group. For young kids to see this and learn.

Modern bushcraft is on point to what I utilize. I attended Airforce SERE school. It's basically what they teach you at the course.

Hi Luke. I love your camping vids out in the wilderness, but I can't help noticing that the cracks of thunder and torrents of rain falling against your tarp don't come through my surround speakers, which would be awesome and move me one step closer to the experience of being right there with you.

As far as new and old Bushcraft goes...I do enjoy watching some of those old fashioned channels, but always wondered why, if they're bringing axes and saws and fancy sleeping bags and fire starting systems, they never bring a tarp to make an actual rain proof roof for their shelters. Evergreen boughs or strips of bark don't work to keep a serious rainstorm off your head over night. As much as I love the rain, I hate trying to sleep in the wet.

Really enjoyed this video and also the stories. I can proudly say I've never hit a gas pump pole or guard, but I did put $20 of regular in my Dodge diesel once 🙄Took me 5 hours to drain the tank and pressurize the system. Love the idea to do a modern bushcrafting series. I've been collecting all kinds of gear for emergencies but also want to do some over night camping on my quad. We are already using chat GPT to help us with technical support answers where I work. You can tell it to create a reply with empathy and you'd be amazed how good it works. I do see a time when it will replace humans doing that type of work once it "learns" everything we teach it. Keep the adventures coming! 👍

What scares me? Hmm. A lot. Let’s limit it to a camping scenario. I’m afraid of lightning. I could never go out in violent thunderstorms like you do, Luke. I am afraid of people, mainly, who are up to no good. I am afraid of a bear or snake coming into my camp. Maybe even coyotes. If I heard them howling near me, I would be afraid. All this is probably one of the reasons I don’t go camping much. A campground would be better, but I hate people and their noise so I don’t go to those either. LOL!

I'm really curious much water you generally take with you on these trips. Great Vid as always. A modern bushcrafting series would be great. It is exactly how I think, even though I can still do primitive tasks. Work smarter, not harder

Luke, coming from the Uk where wild camping doesn’t really exist I love watching your adventures and gear reviews. I do have a question though, why do you often set your tent up so far away from your Tarp?

In areas with bears, it is prudent to prepare food away from where you are sleeping in case they smell your food and come visit.
