I grew up in Alaska and had many encounters with bears but I only considered 2 extremely dangerous. Once I was in the middle of the Chena river near Fairbanks fishing and a large black bear appeared on the bank maybe 25 yards away swinging it’s head. That bear became sausage. The other time at my house in Homer on the tip of the Kenai peninsula I heard a crash. A bear had torn the door off my chicken coop and was inside eating chicken food. I ran the bear off but it kept coming back. The last time I tried to run it off it laid its ears back. It’s hackles came up ant it made a woof and started clicking it’s teeth. That bear became very tasty sausage too. When in bear country my advice is to be armed because bears are unpredictable. Nice video Luke.

@@ChangeHenriquez I carried a 357 magnum and I am a very good shot. I would recommend a 44 magnum and get very good with it for close range protection. For longer range any big bore 30 caliber and above. Brown and grizzlies are big so if you are in their territory keep that in mind.

My husband passed away last year on our anniversary September 3rd 2022 and he and I loved watching your videos. It was our favorite video to watch each week as you did a review on items. He was 8 years older than myself, but you wouldn't have known it because everything I wanted to do, he would follow me right along. If I wanted to go camping he'd go camping, If I wanted to bike he would bike, We had recumbent trikes and we triked all over Ohio on the rail trails. If I wanted to kayak he would kayak on Alum Creek in Ohio. I miss him terribly. He was 82 when he passed. I'm 75 now. And I still do those things that kept us young at heart. Only thing is I do it with my good friend Susan now. But now she has a boyfriend and I'm going to be like out in the backfield so to speak. But I did manage to take a trip out west with my cousin Linda. We spent 28 days on the road driving through state to state seeing things that we've never seen before until I arrived in Ashland Oregon. It's been a week with my sister who I hadn't seen in 12 years, and then from there drove down to Bakersfield, California and back across the United States stopping in Zuni New Mexico to visit the Navajo Indian reservation. Just to give you a little bit about myself. Don't ever stop doing what you do because it cheers me up to watch your videos.

As a child, we had a Hugh green canvas tent. We were always told to not touch the ceiling or sides when it was raining because it would immediately start dripping.

Luke, I understand precisely what you are talking about when bringing up canvas tents. My dad was career Navy. Somewhere in his career, he learned to work with canvas. He was pretty good at it. He made an A-frame canvas tent, supported with a metal frame that snapped together and held the tent up. All of the negative things you said about canvas tents are true, and more. As kids in the early 60s, we visited our aunt and uncle in Baytown, Texas. It was in the Spring, but an unseasonable warm one. Since more people were visiting than there were beds available, he set up the tent in the backyard. No ground cloth, so we sprayed the grass with insecticide (imagine the smell). We did have wood/canvas cots (remember the Boy Scouts summer camps). When you closed the door flaps, it was dark, even in the daytime. While Dad could sew canvas, he knew little about designing a tent. There was no ventilation or protection from bugs, except to close the door flaps. Nighttime in that part of Texas is mosquito heaven, so we had to button up the doors or be eaten alive. Think about the tents you see in Civil War photographs. That’s what the tent resembled. Sleeping in this tent was like being inside an Indian Sweat Lodge. This tent was a car-camp tent because it was too heavy to carry on your back. I’m glad our visit was limited to two nights. Sleeping under the stars, even with the mosquitoes, was much preferred to the inside of the tent. Larry from Texas

Every time I watch you make a cup of coffee, I have the urge to make a cup. I have had my Kodiak Canvas truck tent in torrential rains and it has never leaked. But I do need to make sure that it is 100% dry before bagging it up. Being old school, I like canvas. But not being that old, I am about to get a Hiker Squaredrop (teardrop) within the year. Getting older and less setup is my goal. I have been in a deer stand and heard a herd of deer working their way down towards me from behind me. The excitement grew as they neared. Just when they got alongside me, I dared to look. One dang squirrel with an ear of corn in his mouth. Stay safe and God bless.

I have had a canvas wall tent up for nearly three years in northern Michigan. It’s completely water tight. No issues. We have to clear the snow off so it doesn’t collapse under the weight. When it rains we leave it be. Sheds rain no problem. It has no waterproofing treatment. I have been to Mt Fuji in January. No hiking then. There was very little snow so our bus took us up above the clouds. We took a lift up higher. Incredible. Too bad about people not respecting it during hiking season.

UDAP portable electric bear fence. Unless it’s winter or I’m in a pretty tame area, I always use it. Definitely helps me sleep better at night. Shotgun and a dog help too.

Japan resident here. I hike a lot and Mt. Fuji is definitely last on my list as far as target peaks go. Battling crowds just to reach a peak really misses the point. The Nagano area is easily accessible from Tokyo and has some killer trails. Mt. Shirouma [ 白馬岳] was a blast. One of my bucket list peaks is Mount Tanigawa [谷川岳], which is not so high, but has more fatalities than Everast.

Thank you for another great campout!! I remember seeing one of your much earlier videos in which your little coffeepot looked brand new! Wow, it has a nice patina on it now. That bear smelled the chocolate mocha coffee! What can resist it? The smell probably wafted for over a mile and the sensitive nose of the bear caught it! I loved the sound of the tree frogs. I grew up in south central VA. No bears but those nighttime insects and the smell of the autumn forest I remember very well.

Lots of fun seeing the trail cam footage. As a hunter here in Iowa I run 3 trail cams and get great shots of deer, Turkey, bobcats and coyote. Your big bear looks like a 400lb boar. I saw 35 black bears on my hunting trip to Alberta in Sept. While I was after moose seeing all the bears, elk and mule deer was fun. Great Video work again.

Luke I was stationed in Japan for three years and absolutely loved it. It's such a beautiful country with a unique culture. You really do get the best of ancient traditions and cutting edge technology. Plus the people are simply wonderful, they are mostly pro American and they are the most polite society I've ever experienced. Super that you are protecting your mountain!! Have a Moss tent from 1998, is still bombproof in terrible storms. Another trek in Japan that sounds fun is a walk through small towns with hot springs dotted along the way, staying in bed and breakfasts on the paths. That big bear looked like its front left leg was sore.

Beautiful photography - just gorgeous. The leaves are turning and falling - gorgeous. Reminds me of living in upstate New York around First Lake, Second Lake, etc. many years ago. We would get falling leaves knee deep. Just LOVE the wildlife shown in the trail cam - 15:01. Beautiful creatures large and small. God's creation is so wonderful. I see why you prefer nature compared to being out in the world with the news that we hear and see daily.

Having cut my camping teeth on canvas tents back in the sixties when I was a Boy Scout, I agree that modern tents are far superior to canvas. The difference in convenience and comfort is night and day. I especially appreciate the bathtub floors found in most modern tents.

That is totally correct; we used to use canvas tents and as you have said the current tents are so lite and water 16:11 proof why go thru all of the trouble with canvas care; too much work. The set up of current tents is awesome

Ive lived thru an experience with a black bear - while my family were camping in Petty Jean Mt. Campsites - we set up a Army 10 person wall tent - it had 1 door and no floor and was fun to sleep in - that is until the third night - the people in the next campsite left food out on the picnic table and a bear came in and feasted on the food - it then went looking for more food and entered our tent and panicked everyone - lol - we went out the door and the bear went out the new back door which it made lol - it ran over the pup tent next campsite and had everyone panicking - talk about woke up rudely and mad and scared - the Game Rangers fined $$ the people that left out the food - and our new tent had a new door - lmao

I have a canvas tent and put it through rain 70 mph winds ~ 8 inches of snow in one night and never had an issue. Yes they are bulky and heavy but it’s the warmest homiest tent I’ve ever owned.

I'm 57 years old. I remember camping, as a 12 or 13 year old kid, in the back of our '73 Dodge pickup with a campershell. The site was on the Misssissippi River in southern Illinois. Laying back, listening to the rain on the shell's top....swimming, seeing wildlife, fishing and catching Tom Sawyer style...grilling the catfish, bluegills (pumpkin seed fish), and crappies over an open fire. Even at the age of 12 or 13, you can't forget Marlboros and Budweiser--the rebellious Tom Sawyer stuff! Good times, I miss it. Nostalgia.

I'm like that too Luke, I like to sit with my coffee, and slowly wake up, it just feels good to sip at my coffee :) I live out of town amongst trees, and I never find it boring, the same with the ocean, love to look at it, the sounds of either the forest or the ocean make me feel soothed :)

I have put several people on successful bear hunts. The biggest thing I learned back then is how quite a big animal can move through the brush. Successful hunters would say to my wife and I. "How can an animal so big move so quietly". I don't belive it was a bear.

Thanks Luke for the brutally honest reviews of gear. Recent road trip to Alaska saw 23 bears; some up close (too close) for comfort. Good you always take protection as they can be unpredictable.

I purchased last year a canvas polyester family tent. Used it now 4 weeks in mostly dry condition. I'm glad for this. The breathability is superior to the "modern" tents. I hope to test ist out in wet condition, aware that a lasting drying is needed.

We own a White Duck 18' canvas bell tent that we use for "glamping" together. The wife has a medical condition that precludes her from sleeping in a prone position. Have to use a good multi-position cot/recliner and a "normal" tent really doesn't suit our needs. Can't backpack anyway as I am afflicted with the age-related condition of "brain-says-yes-but-body says-no". I blame 20 years of Army. The tent, though, sets upon 15 minutes so it's just a matter of dragging the bag out of the truck. I tested it out for 3 weeks in November when I got it and it went through numerous heavy rain and d wind events with zero water intrusion so I give that one a thumbs up. BTW, it's a big one. 16' diameter. Thanks for all you do.

There’s another camping youtuber that freeze-drys his vegetables and meats at home prior to going on a camping outing. He also brings with him a small container of cooking oil, and containers of spices and herbs. He puts together some awesome meals.
