Originally, Okinawa itself was an independent country, but was occupied by Japan during the Samurai period and has remained so to this day. Okinawa was also occupied by the US for a while after WW2 and still has many US military bases. This song is by "Okinawans" who are proud of "Okinawa" which does not belong to anywhere.

Correctly it is not “Okinawa.” It is called “ Ryukyu”🐉🔥

The Ryukyu Kingdom was annexed by Japan and became Okinawa prefecture in 1879 so it actually hasn't been too long. Then the people of the islands suffered a terrible time in WW2 and was occupied by the US for a bit... A lot of my Okinawan family still identifies as Okinawan first before Japanese, because there are significant differences culturally and historically. It is true though that with each generation, more and more of the culture and language is getting lost, and most people in Okinawa today only speak Japanese (with some Okinawan "dialect"). The Okinawan language (Uchinaguchi), which my grandparents generation spoke, is now set for extinction which makes me so sad. Even a lot of people in Japan do not know the history of Okinawa. That's why it makes me so happy to see artists like Awich representing the Ryukyu/Okinawa to the world ❤.

@@beniimo888during the 1600’s China had not been conquered by the british and was a formidable force in the east asian region. The satsuma clan wanted to keep trade relations through china via Okinawa/ryukyu hence why the Ryukyu kingdom wasn’t overthrown until 1879 during the meiji restoration. Before then it was a tributary state for the satsuma clan and an opportunity to secretly trade with china.
