SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x-50 Anamorphic Adapter - Shooting anamorphic on 16:9 sensors

Here’s a quick overview on how you can be shooting anamorphic video with the help of the SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x-50 adapter.
It’s commonplace to see filmmakers digitally cropping their 16:9 footage to create that cinematic widescreen look. One of the drawbacks of doing this is that those cropped sections of the image captured in camera, have now been wasted.
So why not shoot anamorphic? It can seem like a daunting task to those filmmakers who have never touched the format before. Since traditionally anamorphic lenses can be relatively expensive, especially if you’re a filmmaker who wants to start working with the format, but doesn’t want to invest in a brand new set of glass.
Cue the SLR Magic Anamorphot adapter, adapter being the key word. It simply attaches to the front of your aspherical lens, and increases the field of view by 33% (when using the Anamorphat 1.33x, more so with the 2x version), and records this increased FOV compressed to 16:9.
Once you’re in the edit, you simply tell your NLE to interpret this footage as anamorphic, and bingo, you get that widescreen look, without compromising your image resolution.

Thank you for sharing that. I have the 1.33 version and quite frankly I struggle to get a crisp image. I see that your images are quite soft. I'm still trying different lenses in the hope that I find something to make the adapter worth the money I paid. I also have the Rangefinder which makes the image even softer! it also extends or retracts as you focus, so can be awkward with a follow focus attached.

Thanks for sharing friend. I see a lot of softness and a sort of misalignment in the image, lots of CA too. What is the aperture, focal length, and lens type ? Are you shooting on an full frame A7S? Cheers

Hi Paul - Not a problem. Yes you're right, I think in my limited time shooting with the adapter there was some human error on my part in ensuring that the adapter was 100% aligned. For this example I was using a 75mm prime at F4 onwards (what SLR Magic recommend) on a FF Sony A7sII. I think the results will vary depending on what taking lens you use with this adapter - KH

Thanks KH ! Sounds great. I have seen some good results from the Anamorphot but you are right, it takes some trial and error. I think I may try the 1.33x-40 with a 50mm 1.1 soon.

Hi Elio - The Anamorphot is used for when shooting in a 16:9 format. It basically 'squishes' the wide anamorphic image into a 16:9 image on the sensor. So, when you put your GH5 into the anamorphic 4:3 mode, you're not going to be getting the full anamorphic image, as you're restricting the 16:9 image the Anamorphot produces into the 4:3 window that the sensor is using in that mode. The Anamorphot is an adapter to be used on cameras that don't typically have anamorphic recording capabilities. The GH5 does have this ability, and that's what the 4:3 setting on it is designed for, however, this is to be used with the more 'traditional' anamorphic lenses that natively output a 4:3 image. Not a problem! Yes just use the normal recording mode. If you end up buying or using the more 'traditional' anamorphic lenses then use the 4/3 mode. Thanks for watching - KH

the out of focus regions looked horrible, chromatic aberration all over the place.. focus looked uneven too... for £900+ they can screw that! This video should have included additional shots in normal daylight conditions.. would have been interesting to see these issues clearly rather than using the night to cover them up!

That's why no one is really buying these. I haven't seen a single example of a shot with these adapters, or even whole SLR Ana Prime lenses, that is decent. Bad.

When I first saw this product on Andrew's EOSHD site, I wasn't won over, here also, sorry to say, I am not sold, but then I saw this footage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n56rdnmMndR5h5Y (not mine) and this is mind blowing. The more I research this, the more I think the taking lens has a lot to do with acquiring great footage.
