My issue with Sal was when Pete dropped the foul ball, Sal was all over him "im done with pete" blah blah blah...but moments later when he hit the HR he was all gung ho about pete. He should have taken the 7 year, $158M offer he got two years ago. He didn’t. He’s not worth a 7 year contract like he wants now, and he definitely isn’t worth the 35-40 he wanted when he hit free agency. Vlad Guerrero Jr is worth what he’s going to end up getting because he is a slugger that hits for contact, who’s strikeout% averages at 15% for his career, batting average is a career .290 after batting average .340 last year (second time finishing a season above .300), is only going to be 26, and has flexibility to play third as well given the weight he’s worked off. Christian Walker had a far better year than Alonso did, and got a 3 yr/60m deal. If you want to get paid, you need to show up in your contract year, and have consistency, he did neither of the those things the last TWO years, but congrats, he hit the home run to get us out of the Wild Card. Doesn’t mean he should be paid what he wants based on the analytics. I try to watch almost every game, every year. There were far too many times he’d come up with runners in scoring position this past year and we needed a hit, and I watched him hit a ground ball at someone, or strike out. Makes sense when his avg wRISP was .220, and his ground ball% hits rose again to 45%. I’m not giving him more than a 3 year deal. Numbers tell the story. Even if he’s a home grown player, and I love him, I want a World Series more.

Here’s the bottom line … Is Pete better than what we have / is the lineup better with Pete in this lineup? Did Pete say 3-90$ Did sterns say 3-70$ So why are we going through all of this for $6M a year for 2 or 3 years? That’s what doesn’t make sense. And I’m not arguing what Pete’s worth or not worth. My point is the team is better with him than without. And then we get baty at third. Who I know makes 240 and 40/105 look like babe Ruth. Lemme ask again. It's a negotiation and the fans side with Pete because until Saturday we never heard management's side of the talks. As far as being ungrateful about signing Soto, the fan base is thrilled about it. However, it understands that Soto is only going to make the Met lineup fearsome with a power bat like Pete's to protect him. Money is always an issue --for both sides. That's what free agency and negotiation is all about. It's complicated and its emotional because Pete is a favorite son, is home-grown, is on the verge of setting a new club mark in all-time home runs. The fans weren't booing Stearns on Saturday so much as they were booing his proposal for Plan B without Pete. It's the loss of Pete that the fans fear, no matter what you think of his talent.

No one has ever fired Boris mid negotiating. Having been involved in a lot of contractual transactions, I would go out on a limb and say Boris puts riders in his agreement contracts that either state players can’t fire him or their are penalties that prevent it such as paying a 20% of contract fee after signing elsewhere, to cover reputation loss and time and effort invested in trying to get said player signed. Or I would think he would have been fired mid negations before. Even Montgomery only fired him after signing, not during the terrible process.

I love cohen and Boris is a pos. But Met fans are 100% booing this team is good on paper and after Soto seems we have done nothing close to what they could have to put the best team possible on the field. And if the Mets want Pete so much, pay him or find a suitable replacement. Dont let it get to spring training with 4 rookies / sophmores on the infield in a win now year. That is what makes no sense. If they don’t want Pete over a certain number then get someone that can help us win. Not be shopping for Tork a 200 hitter with 10 hR. There were 5 suitable first baseman out there this off season. Throw this rotation on top of that and that’s why a lot of fans aren’t happy when 2025 was and is the year we all waited for for years now, waiting for money to come off, 150M and we have a 300M payroll and it’s hard to see where it is.

Sometimes I wish the Mets didn't win and make the playoffs last year. Success, no offense last year was a fluke and kudos for climbing out of it but that was a 1 off. We honestly should have not been up there. Then holding on to last year is not an example of sustain success. Honestly Pete sucks. I’m sorry but he does. A lot of talk about protecting Soto when in reality Pete is an automatic double play. If we coulda got him for the low then great but he’s not a 30/20 mil a year player. He just isn’t.
