He’s a 2-3 war player at this point in his career. He’s a 30 year old 1b-DH and he’s basically just a one dimensional player (power). He’s slow, isn’t a good base runner and he’s not a good defender. He strikes out too much and doesn’t walk enough to compensate for the lack of contact. He’s .250/.340/.515 for his career with those numbers trending down. He’s probably worth something around $50-80 million for three years.

He’s not an elite 1b and he’s 30. He’s in the Christian Walker, Yandy Diaz, Nathaniel Lowe category. He’s a $20 million a year, 3-4 year contract type of player now. Alonso overplayed his hand in 2023 by not taking that $150 million extension.

@@JohnQ1127 totally agree. All I’m saying is the Mets are worse without Alonso and moving Vientos to play first and having 3b as a baty, maraucio (who isn’t even healthy) and Acuna? Platoon is a bad idea
@JohnQ11274 сағат бұрын
@@kgarba9253 , It’s much easier to replace a 30 year old 2-3 war first baseman than to replace a 2-3 war player at any other position. The point being is that you don’t want to overpay or get stuck in a long term contract for slow, defensively challenged, limited offensive first baseman. Christian Walker just received a three year $60 million contract which is realistically what Alonso is worth. Vientos isn’t a good defensive 3b so you can move him to 1b. You can make up Vientos offensive numbers by putting a better fielder at 3b or a higher batting average at 3b. Alonso declined the $150 million extension because he thought he was worth more than that. I guess he thought he was a $30 million a year player worth a 6-7 year contract at age 30. Then he hit .229/.324/.480 numbers in 2023-24. He bet on himself and lost. Now he has to deal with the results.

I think that one thing not often mentioned and I’m sure is not lost on Stearns is that Pete Alonso had every motivation in a walk year to be the absolute best he could be , show the plate discipline he sometimes showed but most times did not , show all he has ..The Mets then sign him and Pete now doesn’t even have THAT motivation to do better .. As for losing the 34 home runs we also lose the hundreds of worthless outs too .. Add to that we are not talking a 25 year old but a 30 yr old who all indications show no sign of improvement, even given he somehow gets luckier bounces next year I see no reason the Mets could be blamed for not foreseeing it .. But having said all that I’d like to see the Mets sign him , and if he goes into slumps drop him in the lineup , give him some time on the bench .. As for the Milwaukee home run and there’s no denying the Mets don’t get to lose to the Dodgers without it, it’s Lindor who hit the home run against Atlanta and later Philly that made the Mets season it was..

Blue Jays aren’t getting 5 top 10 prospects for Vlad Jr he’s a FA after this season Yankees traded ( a bottom 10 farm system ) #8, #14 & #27 ranked prospects in there farm system plus Michael King & some lower level guys. Blue Jays would be lucky to get anyone else’s top 5 prospect. The best thing about the Mets is they can send Clifford in the deal ( who’s a 1B ) and he’s ranked #4 in the Mets farm system & #87 in the top 100 ( Not a single Yankees prospect they sent for Soto were in the top 100 ). I really do think y’all overvalue the market. For example Mets can trade Clifford #4, Jesus Baez #14, Alex Ramirez #24, Megill and throw in Baty and that’s way more value than what the Padres got for Soto.

He can’t throw can’t catch can’t run and can’t hit over .220 Not worth it

He hit .240. His defense is fine. He is one of the best catching 1B. Power hitters dont need to run fast. Everything wrong.

@ he literally falls over almost every time he runs… don’t give me scoop rate and say he is fine defensively. Because he can’t catch a fly ball. And he won’t sniff .240 again and will get over 200ks All he does is hit home runs and he barely does that.

They’re going to stand pat this year, see what they have with the kids, and then go hard after Vladdy in 2026. That’s the year they’re going all in.
