Philadelphia's loss was definitely San Francisco's gain at KFRC. I'm so grateful I was able to hear Dr. Don Rose for many years starting in late '73 and then work in promotions for a short time while he was still doing mornings before the Big 610 changed to Magic 61. Dr. Don was one of a kind! Thanks for the memories.

Love this aircheck! We lived next to them in NJ back then. Were great friends over the years. I became a radio personality because of him in the 80s. Dr. Don Rose was the icon of radio in my opinion, now I use his sound bites for content for my Radio Lectures where I teach Technology Communications at University of Maine. :) The whole Rose family is awesome!

Thanks for posting this air-check. I was already at KFRC on this day. I remember DDR's arrival in San Francisco, I had the pleasure of helping him getting settled in the Bay Area. I did the 9 to Noon show at KFRC and followed DDR. It was such a pleasure working with him for a few years there at KFRC before I departed KFRC for another station in San Francisco (spent 32 years on the air in SF). DDR was always a favorite of mine in Philadelphia at WFIL, since I grew up in Reading, PA and would listen to his show (and Chuck Browning's) in the morning when I was attending college there in the late 60's. Another one of my memorable times was working with Jim Nettleton and Hy Lit at WOGL after leaving California in 2003 and returned to PA for about 3 years. Thanks again for the memories.

Great radio stories Jack. Thanks for sharing. I never made it to Philly; the closest I made it there was our radio station buying the Philadelphia Story jingle package. Sure made our station and my show sound top shelf.

Thanks for posting this. What memories! My first "autograph" of an important person was Dr. Don, when he worked at KFRC. I was 11 years old and I thought it was the most amazing treasure. He sounded so comfortable when he started at KFRC that I thought he'd been there for years. This video taught me that he was brand new at KFRC in '73, fresh from Philadelphia. What history.

He was ICONIC here in the Philly area! He and the his fellow WFIL AM colleague, the late great DJ, George Michael, provided the radio soundtrack to so many of us Philly-area teens' lives back in the late 1960's, early 1970's!

Started every morning before grade school listening to Dr Don Rose. Long before the internet, cable TV and smart phones there was network TV on the old Zenith and AM radio on the Panasonic dial transitor radio with telescopic antenna. Today listening to WMMR You Call it Friday Nights and PBS 88.5 WXPN Highs in the 70s but none can compare to the broadcasters from the AM radio days. I believe Dr Don Rose was in LA to accept broadcaster of the year award when approached by KFRC with an offer he could not refuse. I can only assume WFIL did not have Dr Don under contract. All those AM radio DJs were true broadcasters compared to most FM counterparts today.

Back when Top 30 radio was actually good! A real variety of music. Not the same crappy song over and over like today.
@mrgreenjeans17942 жыл бұрын
Spot on. The top 30 back then was like a greatest hits compilation compared to the paucity of good song writing and producing today.

Do you have an unscoped version of this aircheck? Scoped messes up the continuity.
