Station sign-on, starting with second "Fox 32" logo ID animation and aerial shot of Chicago skyline in the daytime (voiceover by Jim Barton) - with reference to the 205 North Michigan Avenue address to which WFLD moved in 1987, and to Al DeVaney who was vice president and general manager of the station from February 1986 to January 1988 (he went from there to oversee WPWR Channel 50)
Thought For Today which starts with first Fox-era 32 logo - delivered (off-camera) by Rev. Princella Hudson Gilliam, Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Chicago, speaking of a visit by a missionary in China to an island and Jesus' time on earth (opening voiceover by Jim Barton)
This aired on local Chicago TV on Wednesday, August 12th 1987 at about 5:50am.

What was up with the long, silent WFLD 32 telop? Technical difficulties?

Probably just a gap between the end of the first day's schedule and the start of the second. Lacking any promos, PSAs, etc. to fill the gap, it came down to a choice between sitting on the ID or throwing up the color bars for there minutes.

You are right. It is probably an unsold commercial break, and it was easier for the engineers at WFLD to just put the ID on for its duration. If other footage indicates, WFLD was usually off the air earlier than this, so it was a simulated sign-off, as indicated by Jim Barton's announcement during the news promo that regular broadcasting would resume at 6 AM.

As you can see by this slide that this ident is similar to WNYW-TV (channel 5) in New York City and other stations where they used that variant of this ident.
