Such honest and beautiful playing. The C# major before the return of the A theme around is pure magic. Perhaps this piece can also be described the way Jean Luc Goddard described Au Hasard Balthazar, the magnificent Bresson film that uses this very piece as soundtrack: "the world in an hour an a half." The world in 40 minutes (the entire D959, that would be)

I really appreciate the fact that music allows for subtle (sometimes not so subtle) differences in performance that allow us to hear from a different angle. Brendel's and Lewis' approach to this piece couldn't be more different, and yet I find each satisfying in its own way.

No ideas on the sheet music... I'm always amazed how these pianists come in and play 30 or 40 minutes of music with no sheet music. Incredible talent and work ethic.

Saddest thing ever made.
