True enough, this is the best analog TV "farewell" in the entire USA. You have a complete package here - bits of history, the National Anthem, and the press of the button - with past luminaries to boot.

Wow. Reminds me of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection shutdown and people paying tribute with final matches before shutdown. Still surprises me how the televisions I grew up with had that coaxial connector (before composite) and even the prongs when the NES was around.

This was one of the better goodbyes to analog. Some were abrupt, without hoopla, others, like this, paid a fitting tribute to a bygone era for television.

WGHP did such a good job with the shut off, it was a nostalgic and fitting tribute to the station. The only local station that really did anything. WFMY had a sort of tribute but it was lacking, WXII didn't even do one. That was pathetic, but it's hard to believe it has been 4 years since then.
@davidmatthewvinotjr83965 жыл бұрын
WFMY just decided to play the SSB as for going off and calling WSJS pathetic, you really have to give WSJS-TV props since channel 12 got the timing Correctly, they cut to nightlight at 11:59:59 PM.

On his Twitter feed about the DTV transition, the Fox 8 engineer told us to expect something special for the occasion, and they didn't disappoint. I understand the art department was especially proud of that 60s vintage KJL-88 slate.
@DanTheMan1985ful6 жыл бұрын
You do realize that KJL-88 is the High Point Studio to the remote Transmitter site in Sophia Microwave relay Link, right? That's what STL stands for; Studio to Transmitter Link. The studio sends the signal to the transmitter and the transmitter relays that same signal for home reception.

It's been 7 years since then... 2009 was a great year for me, and didn't really care at the time to realize that it was the last year of the 00's decade. I remember a few people saying they were kinda sad that the decade was over, and I was like uh time is still going on its just a new year and decade. Now looking back I myself am sad and nostalgic that it's over and realizing that it's been 7 years since '09 plus we are towards the end of this decade with the rest of this year to go with 3 more years then the year will be 2020... Man time is passing by!

I do live in NC. in fact, I live in the Piedmont Triad between Winston-Salem and Kernersville. I recorded several dozen sign-offs of NC-SC-VA TV stations between Autumn 1988 and June 1993. All were received over-the-air at my home. I also recorded a few from Eastern NC stations off the cable during vacations at Topsail Island, NC during 1993-2000.

Very true. Although WJW would occasionally dot the "i" in "ei8ht" with the CBS eye, the call letters for both logos are on the same exact spot (on top of the "8"). WJW would revive that logo a year after their affiliation switch to Fox, in late 1995.

WGHP's DTV transmission had been on a temporary UHF channel. They were turning the ch-8 DTV signal on after the analog vacated ch-8.
@wesleytan68424 жыл бұрын
The DTV channel went back permanently to their pre-DTV UHF channel, Ch. 35, due to loss of viewers, and VHF Ch. 8 was permanently discontinued. In 2020, they moved to UHF Ch. 31.

Found something from Fybush.com: Their backup analog transmitter was the one used to "symbolically switch-on" their DTV signal. Their original digital transmitter (which is not in the video) has been on for a couple of years before that.
@mcydodge9195 жыл бұрын
At the time, they switched their digital channel from 35 to 8. Then they got complaints from people not being able to pick up 8, so the FCC let them broadcast on both 8 and 35 for a few months until they chose 35 full-time.

Analog transmission has been given to telecommunications companies in the US like T-Mobile to improve network signals. But really, the analog VHF anr UHF signals are intended to be used for first-responders (especially for emergency situations).
