It was down to Retro 30 and ET65, and I ordered 2 ET65's. This video reinforces my decision. Cheers!

I have 2 ET65's (Top) and 2 Retro 30's (Bottom) in a 4X12 Cab pushed by a Carvin MTS-3200H fitted with JJ Tubes from Euro-Tubes. The tone from this mix is Heaven sent, from its glorious cleans to just downright screamin' dirty. My thanks go to Vaughn at WGS for making the suggestion. And because of his help, I will only use WGS Speakers from here on out. Great Demo - ROCK ON GMD...!

+betterthandead ohyea - Not at all. And thanks to Vaughn's recommendation, I have also outfitted my 2008 Fender FM212R with the same combination, because the stock speakers were just plain awful. So, suffice to say my FM212R sounds unbelievably fantastic, a-la as close to a Twin Reverb as one can get without paying the price, and it also takes pedals with zero issues.

Good demo, thanks. They sound quite similar to me. I don't think any ones better, I could see using et65 for a certain song for example, but the retro for another...

Fantastic comparison and playing! Both are nice for cleans but I prefer the ET65 for driven tones.

Great comparison. I use et 65s in my 2x12 cab. Head is JCM 800 2203 and its a perfect match. :) Way better than chinese Celestions these days.

The 65 is much warmer and balanced overall with nice midrange. The R30 seems a bit bright for both clean/drive tones

65 wins my vote here. They seem warmer, smoother and fuller with still a great crunch.

@@Macmax7077 I don't believe you, because you haven't listed all speakers you have tried in your life. What if you only tried one R30 and some cheap, stock speaker included with mass production amp?

I have Vet30/ET-65 412. The latter calms down the bark of the former to blend for a perfect fit in tone where it's hard to tell the difference. Just one COMPLETE sound.

+Michael M I have a Line 6 cab with Celestion V30's in it. I love the sound but I wanted something to balance out the tone a bit. I'm assuming the ET65 would work for the Celestions as well? I have a 1979 Marshall JMP 2204
@MesaESP0131

+7hotfuzz7 the benefit of running ET65s and Vet30s is the sensitivity (The over all volume of the speaker) is more balanced (within .4 Db of eachother) You may find your Celestion vintage 30 (100 Db) to be louder than the ET65 (99.45 Db) however they are close. You could be very happy with them, I know I love my ET65s to death, and I also own a pair of 1980 Celestion G12-65s (the original)

+Michael M I have this exact same 4x12 combination in the X pattern in an old Peavey front-loaded carpeted cab, currently with a Vox AC100cph head. Long break-in period for me as I primarily practice through either a 5E3 combo with a Weber 12" or my ancient Ampeg B25 with 2 15"s. I'm otherwise waiting to power the 4 x 12"s with a JTM-45 circuit head and confident it's going to be a great tone machine once I get some volume hours on both. I might try mounting them in a lighter and more resonant plywood cab instead of the MDF cab in the future.

+MesaESP0131 finally got the et-65's in and it sounds great. Really nice balance....the V30's are a just a tiny tiny bit louder but the ET-65s really have a pronounced sound

I've 3 cabinets, one with WGS ET-65, one with Retro 30 and an other with Jensen Jet Tornado. Finally I prefer the Retro 30 for clean up to 80's hard rock.

The ET65 sounded better in both samples to my ears, the sound of classic rock! The retro isn't bad but it's a tad harsh and bright. I have a retro30 in my peavey valve king that I'm looking to replace(too bright for this amp). Now I'm torn between the veteran30 and the ET65.

Thanks for this comment. I have a Peavey ValveKing II and I was torn between the Retro 30 and the ET65. Knowing that the ValveKing is already a bright amp and that's part of the reason that I'm looking for a different speaker, I think I will go for the ET65 in hopes it will warm the amp's sound up a bit. No point in buying another bright speaker as that would defeat the goal.

Great demonstration of these two speakers! one of the best in the web, concerning WGS speakers. I would say TH6 for classic rock and Retro 30 for hard rock! Although I'm looking for good speakers mainly for hard rock and 80's metal, I really enjoyed the ET65 here! Both sound great!

Would (4) ET65’s in a 4x12 be good or (4) ET90’s in a 4x12? Curious but I’m leaning towards (2) Retro 30’s and (2) ET90’s. Thoughts?
