Heck, he is the one who manipulated Horus into falling into corruption and plotted the fall of the Imperium. Lorgar anger for the Emperor rejecting his creation of a religion worshipping the Emperor just provided the opportunity he wanted since Erebus already served the Chaos Gods in secret. Erebus is basically that so called "minor" character who is secretly the Mastermind behind the problems while some more well known big face person takes the spot light distracting people from his actual role in everything.

I'm in the tricky position of having been in and around Warhammer in general since Hero Quest in 1989, and 40K since Space Crusade in 1990. As a result, I'm continuously tripping over lore that's been retconned or changed without me noticing. Rather annoying, I think you'll agree. Also, a small note on 40K being a satire. People sometimes conflate Satire with parody and silliness or humor. 40K is not like that: it's satire in the same way as Judge Dredd. It's a very British form of satire that takes itself, and it's internal lore, very seriously but is absurd when examined from a modern perspective. Which isn't to say 40K can't be very silly when it wants to...

Y'know I never thought about that but it's a pretty solid comparison, kinda makes me wanna play some New Vegas again, Mr House is such a fun character. Since our times and that of Fallout: New Vegas are basically completely unknown for humanity in the year of 40k you could even invent some head canon where Mr House and the courier succeeded and that's why humanity was able to colonize the solar system and beyond, lmao.

I'm new to Warhammer 40K. In a sense, it kind of feels like the Diablo universe where both sides are completely intolerant of each other, but neither side is actually good. Normally in a CRPG I am the goody two-shoes. I will probably try to be the same here but I get the feeling this one will challenge me into becoming a morally gray character at best

One important tidbit, you said the Mechanicus consider the Emperor to be the avatar of the Omnissiah. Actually, they consider him to *be* the Omnissiah, which is part of a trinity with the Machine God and the Motive Force.

Understanding 40k lore is very easy. Just read the very few three or four hundred novels that are out there, and you'll be fine. Simple.

Also note: word bearers primarch wrote the book that the imperium now follows. They are very cross that the book is quoted back at them to try to banish them back into the chaos they now worship.

I have a question about the game itself. is there a lot of voice acting or is it mostly reading? I see screens of text in the gameplay from this video. I dont mind reading personally. but i like to stream my games and i force myself to read everything out loud. unless its voice acted already. I come from old school RPGs so im used to gratuitous amounts of text, but i usually love the voice acting in most Warhammer games. I'm such a huge Warhammer fan. I recently got into the crpg/xcom/diablo-esk genre of games and Rouge Trader could very well be the most perfect game to me.

I would say the Tau Empire seemed like the closest thing to good guys of this universe. (Though not an expert just played campaign mode from their perspective in the Dark Crusade RTS game lol)

Good by comparison sure, but in practice they're utilitarians and will conquer worlds by force if they deem it the pragmatic thing to do as they seek to establish their 'enlightened' society. Main difference between T'au and the other factions is that they'll ask you to join them if they think you can be useful, but they're still likely to try to kill you if you say no.

Yeah, Dune was certainly one of many big inspirations for the setting - along with various 2000AD properties, the Foundation series, a bunch of Tolkien, a dash of Star Wars. a bit of Alien etc etc. 40k was initially a self-aware mashup of many sci-fi and fantasy universes that's been given its own spin over the decades.
