This show is filled with irony, Tony's family was more of a threat than the FBI.

Yep! On that FBI note, ironic that it was Agent Harris who gave him the heads up that he was a target (in addition to Sil telling him after his visit with Burt).

@@SopranosBlueprint I was thinking you might have recognised me by some of your replies but I shut myself down thinking I was just getting an ego, thankyou for the affirmation, really! Anyway, it's all good, thanks for making content that I can appreciate enough to consistently engage with. You're criminally underrated like the scene where the nurse tells Tony "losing a little weight wouldn't hurt". Love from Western Australia 🌹🌹 keep killing it girl!

I have the feeling that if Tony was whacked at any point after Jackie died, nothing would have happened to the killers, unless it was some random person or someone very low in the rankings, but as for anyone involved in "this thing of ours" who had some kind of power, I think there would be little to no repercussions. That glorified crew was a mess after Jackie's death.

Agreed. I feel like Tony was more so feared rather than respected, and acted more as an intimidating Thug rather than a mob boss.

Taking a break from work to watch your video! Great insights as usual! Coupla three things: Indeed, Tony *wanted* to believe that you could count on family...but I think even he knew this was wishful thinking. In the pilot episode he admits that while Johnny Boy never reached the "heights" that he did (presumably wealth), he surmises that he had it better because, as Tony perceived, he had loyalty. (I do think that Tony tends to romanticize the old times too much throughout the series.) But as you point out some of his most cunning adversaries were from within his own family including Uncle June, Janice, and his mother. (shouldn't they have embodied the very same loyalty trait he wistfully remembers from Johnny Boy's day?). Also, I mentioned this before but Im even more convinced...malapropisms and misquotes of famous sayings are the source of a lot of memorable comic relief in the Sopranos...please please please do a video on this :)

Thank you!!! Glad you got to enjoy it during a work break 😃😃 and yes, I agree with you - Tony WANTED to believe the things he said, but so often, he was merely repeating things he’d heard but that he doesn’t even necessarily believe in the first place. OR things he himself is guilty of (“Sometimes, we’re all hypocrites…”)

Unpopular opinion: livia wasn’t in on the Tony hit it’s just a popular theory because it makes the show interesting. All signs point to her being legit being delusional. Nothing confirmed by chase

Good call on the Fat Boys' Institute Tapes, Blue. Also Paulie's devotion/path to betrayal is a book in itself. Love these fresh takes. First show I saw was episode three, long time ago. Paulie didn't have an arc, but he tried for an angle.

When Johnny "Sac" said to Tony, "I got no intention to stick my beak in." Then, that's all he does. Making minest with Ralph, Paulie, Zellman, the HUD thing, whatever happened there.

Right?! A bit ironic re: sticking his beak in by moving into the new NJ home when you think about how it ends up going into Soprano hands later on in the show.

I get upset whenever I hear livia say “I guess I should’ve kept my mouth shut, like a mute!” Yes in fact, that’s the idea. What kind of mob wife are you? She was deliberately trying to screw Tony, I know, but I thought her taking that stance repeatedly and nobody challenging it was a dialogue miss by the writers.
@SopranosBlueprint
@SopranosBlueprint 6 ай бұрын
Very true! That also makes me think of “Remember when is the lowest form of conversation” - aka keep your mouth shut! Makes you wonder what other things she “let slip” back in the day when Johnny Boy was boss or moving up the ranks.

As always, another great video. I've watched so many other Soprano channels, but what makes your channel different from all of the others is that you want to know what we think. The others just tell you what they think, and then end the video. I won't leave a comment on any other Soprano channel because I'm loyal to my Don. 😊 In "Mr. Ruggerio's Neighborhood" Skip says that Tony rarely talks outside of his house because he fears "Parabolics." So it's possible that the FBI used a Parabolic Microphone to record Livia and Junior's conversion. In the clip you showed of Livia and Junior in the car, and he says that something may need to be done about Tony, the next shot is Livia looking straight into the camera, almost as though she was looking at us. That's a little creepy. When you said that The Sopranos can be hilarious and tragic at the same time, you made me think about my favorite Livia scene, which pretty much encapsulates just how mentally screwed up she is. It's the scene when AJ visits her in the hospital. When AJ enters, Livia has her head turned away from the plate of food in front of her, as if she has no appetite, but when she starts telling AJ that life's a big nothing, you'll die in your own arms, don't ever expect happiness because you won't get it...etc, she suddenly regains her appetite and starts chowing down on her meatloaf and potatoes. That is truly hilarious and tragic.

I absolutely love how despite their obvious differences Mikey seems genuinely bothered by Junior floating killing Tony, almost like it makes him sad. It's like it was fine to talk about it when he doesn't think it's a possibility but when Junior says otherwise he gets this look. I have a very hard time believing the recording outside of the theater is a mistake. I think they were either recording them from a nearby vehicle (easily done back then), had bugged something Livia had on her, or she herself was wired up. Seems like a massive oversight.
