Footage of the decomposition of a large whale carcass in the deep sea. Notice the successional changes in the community that is supported by this massive input of nutrients. This video is produced by the laboratory of Dr. Craig Smith, University of Hawaii. Please contact him at craigsmi at hawaii dot edu for further questions and comments.

A prime example of how the simple idea of "waste" makes no sense in the natural world: the whale corpse is a source of nourishment promptly used by many other sea animals, from sharks to little worms... Nature is still the best teacher... thank you for posting this... :-)

Yep, hagfish. The bone worms look like small red flowers/feathers on the close ups of the bones.

TRULY AMAZIN When somethin so big dies, it becomes the home of an infinity of small animals 1:20 is osedax, 0:10 is a indeterminate shark, 0:50 is a indeterminate hagfish (hagfishes r cool!) Its like a 50 meters pizza falls from da sky! :D Ud see PLENTY of people runnin 4 pizza!

i wanna start a hardcore band called "osedax" from wikipedia: Osedax is a genus of deep-sea siboglinid polychaetes, commonly called boneworms, zombie worms or bone-eating worms. Osedax is Latin for "bone-eating", the name alluding to how the worms bore into the bones of whale carcasses to reach enclosed lipids, on which they rely for sustenance.

great to watch while listening to stars of the lid. this is a beautiful happening. think of the life being given back. think of the facilitation that a whales death really is. an enabler for all those other lives to grow and nourish the sea. i cant get over how beautiful that is. thank you for posting it.
