You could breach the hull of your new dinghy, but you'd have to be travelling at around 200 kilometres an hour, in which case I don't propose we'd have enough time to worry about sinking,lol, you've created a great vessel Doug, when I think back to the time when it was a non descript piece of flat steel on the ground, amazing. Really am most appreciative and grateful for your platform in the celebration of creative energies Doug, really awesome stuff. Happy Easter and all the best regards from here on the West Coast side of Australia 🌏 Cape Naturaliste 🤟🙏🖖🎩

That engineering on a small boat is great. A US company built them for a while. Logic/Triumph. They were too expensive for the market at the time, a few years ago. The smallest model, a 12 " Tender is as tough a tender/dingy as you can get. I buy every used one I can get and refirb. and resell. Repairs easily with plastic welding tecniques.

Went out to sea today by myself anchored closed to a nice island. This is the best time on the coast early spring, hardly no boats out yet and you have it all to yourself. Made a fresh healthy loaf of bread in the oven. Fixed a little thing on my windvane self steering gear. Tomorrow morning splash to wake up, 5 degrees celsius water temp. Then cleaning of the winter dirt from my boat. Two more days off from work. Sunny skies and really good weather. What more to expect.

The Whaly is really a nice and stable one. We had one for fishing in the Netherlands (Don't go fishing in a RIB with four guys and some beer :-). For the Whaly there is a navigation frame and a bimini as accessories. Very advantageous if you are about to travel to the caribbean soon:-) It's really a pity about the beautiful aluminum tender but there's no way around it. We all had a lot of fun watching the construction of the tender..... What? The build has been over three years ago!!

You may want to consider a light color canvas top/sides for both sides. The lower latitudes can really heat up dark colors. Funny thing about the color red and sunlight… it tends to fade the fastest of all colors… no idea why. (Stop sign vs green road signs.) I had a house fade to pink, I kid you not. Green and black absorbs almost the same amount of light energy (No wonder trees and grass are green). What pigment fades the fastest; red; not blue, not orange, not green… etc. Looks like a great boat. Safe travels! Go pink whale!?

Hey Doug! My best guess on tearing a hole into the Whaly would be a Hand full of years of uv light and then the same axe would maybe do a little crack. Would not many anyways 😂
@grinchyface

Not only is the foam preventing you from sinking, the plastic is actually LDPE, and is less dense than water. The foam could be completely gone, and with 2 people in it you could scuttle the engine and float forever. Whalys are awesome. There is another brand I don't recall the name of that is a little better due to higher HP rating and a landing mechanism

Plastics are amazing once you get over the bad reputation. (there does seem to be way too many bags and bottles) The way they can be molded, it's pretty amazing. Theres a new material coming into use thats harder lighter and tougher its also cheaper than E glass and thats Basalt fiber...but it has to be moulded like glass plus it doesnt snap like carbon fiber... Its also fire resistant and Chemical and electrically innert.

Part of our capts schpeel before the trip was stating that we feed the gators hot dogs on a stick. He then asked a young man in the boat what this is, holding up his hand. The boy of course said "its your hand" the capt immediatly replied "wrong, its five hotdogs on a stick. Keep them inside the boat... He was a hoot...

I'd have some plastic welding skills on-hand with that boat. It's not hard but it takes practice and having the right materials and equipment to do it. A cover would be a good investment too, top-deck in full tropical sun will probably start to get brittle in ~12 years.

Polyethylene boats were first developed for whitewater kayaking over 40 years ago. The material definitely passes the test for toughness while relatively new. Needless to say, whitewater rivers are the ultimate torture test for boatbuilding materials. With that said, time is the Achilles heel for polyethylene boats. Their biggest enemy is sunlight. Long term exposure to UV light will make the plastic brittle. Polyethylene formulations for boats contain additives that reflect UV light (much like sunscreen works), but given long enough exposure, the hull will become brittle and be subject to cracking from impact forces. At the end of its life, I would also look for transom failure caused by stresses induced by the engine during pounding wave conditions. So how long will it last? There is no way to tell, but living on Seeker's davits in direct sunlight from above and reflected sunlight from below should be considered extreme conditions that will work against longevity. Meanwhile, this Whaley is a great tender design and will be a great public test for this type of boat.
@biga3209
@biga3209 2 жыл бұрын
Here’s the thing- the main alternative for a tender for most people is a RIB and they start leaking after 3 years or so. Their lifespan is about 8-10 years. I guarantee you, UV or not, this Whaly will outlast that and require very little maintenance.
@dogpatch75
@dogpatch75 2 жыл бұрын
@@biga3209 It very well may and 10+ years would be good. Another plus is that the material can be recycled at the end of its life. Doug did make a good choice for his tender. However, I can tell you that polyethylene whitewater kayaks exposed to daily sunlight do become susceptible to cracking in a few years. This is true even of top-of-the-line brands, like Perception, who pioneered the technology for boats. Hopefully Whaley transoms are engineered well enough to handle the stresses put on them by outboard motors as the plastic ages. Time will tell. 🙂
