Agreed. This wasn't courtesy, you can see the traffic ahead has come to a standstill. Closing the gap here would actually be a traffic violation, as you're blocking traffic. In this case, the Pick-up driver should not have used the turn lane.

The pickup driver technically used the center turn lane that both directions used to pass and get to the single turn lane for their direction as a shortcut. But either way, the car should have been more cautious when pulling out instead of flooring it.

As a paralegal who works for a firm specializing in traffic violations, there is 2 things that the US should institute across the country. 1. #15 - I do agree that leaving those gaps can be dangerous but I'm pretty sure in my state of New Jersey, you are not allowed to block intersections and driveways so there's probably a little bit of digging I would have to do, that also looks like a turn only lane (suicide lane) and it looks like the truck was blasting down it because it would eventually turn into a left lane. Regarding #15 it looks like they were stopped for the red light. In such a case you aren't supposed to block exits and intersections if traffic is stopped ahead for the traffic light.
@melkiorwiseman5234
@melkiorwiseman5234 5 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if it's the same in all states of the USA, but it's a blanket rule throughout Australia that you must not block an intersection, which means that it's illegal to enter an intersection without being sure that you can exit it immediately. Too many drivers ignore that rule, though, and they get away with it far too often, which leads to cross-traffic being delayed when it shouldn't be.

4:06 There’s nothing inherently dangerous about leaving gaps when the streets are congested. If there are three lanes, and one is banked up, and they leave a gap, and then the second lane does the same thing, when the third lane does the same thing, only then is it safe for traffic on the side streets to cross. The issue isn’t leaving the gap, the issue is cars proceeding when only some of the lanes have left a gap but others are still flowing. The alternative you are suggesting is that no one leave a gap, and when all three lanes are congested, traffic on the side street, which could safety cross, can’t because everyone is blocking their way. This just leads to unnecessary traffic congestion. The golden rule is that you don’t cross unless ALL lanes have stopped, and you see that ALL lanes have left a gap. It works perfectly well in Australia because we all know not to dart across until all lanes are stopped. What America needs to do is tighten the restrictions on who can get a driver’s licence. It’s far too easy to get a licence in the US, as the bar to obtaining one is ridiculously, and dangerously low.
@skylerlightning4620
@skylerlightning4620 5 ай бұрын
That was two lane road as middle lane was pure turning lane as in not allow drive in or use to pass other people. Edit: as for people getting driver license it very much required to go any where in USA as roads you see in this video are the only way get those places as there no other straight or walkable path or bike lanes.
@just_passing_through
@just_passing_through 5 ай бұрын
@@skylerlightning4620 The number of lanes does not matter. If there’s one lane, and that lane stops to let people through, you only have to wait until that one lane leaves a break in the traffic, and it’s safe to go through. It’s the same for two lanes, or five lanes, or 100 lanes. But if there’s two lanes, you don’t go if only one has stopped flowing. If there’s 100 lanes, you don’t go if only 99 have stopped flowing. And as far as that logic about licences goes, what you are in effect saying is that even the people who are provably incapable of driving should be given a licence, because there are no bike paths or sidewalks. Do you not see the flaw in that argument?
@kerrysater157
@kerrysater157 5 ай бұрын
@@just_passing_through you have no idea what you're talking about. The reason gaps are dangerous is because you can't see to tell how many lanes have stopped. You can't see the cars coming in the far lane because the stopped cars in the closest lane are blocking your line of sight. Also, people aren't just given driver's licenses, you have to go through training and take a test. If you don't or can't drive, you don't have a license and are forced to rely on public transportation or get rides from people. Seeing as you don't actually know what's required to get a license in the US, for example you're not even aware that it's state run not federal, maybe don't talk about what you don't know
@just_passing_through
@just_passing_through 4 ай бұрын
@@kerrysater157 If you can’t see when lanes have stopped you shouldn’t be behind the wheel of a car. As I said, it’ works fine in the UK and Australia as our benchmark for getting a licence, albeit much lower than Scandinavian countries, is much higher than the US, where standards for passing a driving test are some of the lowest in the developed world. Also, I am well aware there is no national standard in the US to obtaining a drivers licence. That’s also part of the problem. In some states it is ludicrously easy to get a licence, and in other states slightly harder, but never up to international requirements in any state. You don’t have to be American to know that.
@mimcduffee86

You should check all lanes before proceeding. Either way, you hardly ever have to cross multiple lanes. Car engines need to be redlined at least one every week or two to keep them clean. It's not excessive acceleration. It's just an Italian tune-up. Blows out carbon buildup. Besides, it would be very difficult for the courts to quantify excessive accelerations unless there's wheel spin. If I have a car that can do 0-60 in 4 seconds, then getting it up to 60 in 6 seconds is quite conservative.

It's 2 lanes both directions with a center left turn only lane in that section. It never ceases to amaze me how many laws were broken on that road as well as how many people get pissed off when they tell you to go but you can see more of the road than they can and don't go because of oncoming traffic. The Wendy's set their exit up as right turn only because of accidents and people still insisted on making that left turn, people used the center turn lane as a multi-car passing lane or high-speed lane, and I had several rear-end accidents happen literally right in front of me by people not paying attention to stopped traffic. That road is so busy that all the stop lights (and there are a lot of them) would back up pretty far. Tourist season makes all that traffic even worse.

The 2nd to last clip 12:05. Yeah the car went on the red light. But they weren't involved in the accident ... Had the camera crashed into them then yes it would be their fault for running the light. But as they stopped and the camera car stopped the car behind the camera was the one involved in the accident not the car that went on the red light ... So the insurance would be the 2 cars involved

I try to never leave a gap unless there’s a sign saying to leave a gap. I get crapped on for it but hey I’m not trying to cause an accident, and it’s also important to be aware of these situations. If the cars in front of you are stopped there is a reason! If it's not your lane proceed slowly by with caution, not zip by at speed. But then that requires all of us to be more mindful and more patient. (I'm guilty of lack of patience myself)

It's not a problem of letting a gap open to let people go through, it's a problem of not proceeding with caution when there's a gap. There's no defensive driving whatsoever from the people crossing but from drivers passing 2 or 3 lane of stopped traffic without slowing down because their lane is clear and not expecting an idiot pedestrian or bike or car changing lane or someone going through a gap without looking.

Not to mention that I've driven through areas in a city where, if people didn't allow side-traffic to enter (technically, illegally) during "rush hour", then the side street would be blocked and all cars in it would have to wait until the end of rush hour (which is usually a lot longer than one hour). It's just not practical. So long as the people entering are sensible, and do something like joining the closest flow of traffic and then using legal turns if they need to go the opposite direction, there's no problem. At least, that's how it seems to work here in Aus.

Kindly take note, that intersection in front of the Bass pro shop here in Springfield MO is already VERY hazardous due to large tractor trailers. It also sees a very high volume of traffic for most of the day. And having most of the small cars speed up to block anybody from exiting the local shops does NOT help it any! Sadly, for you what the one car did IS legal here, although the car which was exiting is supposed to turn right to continue with the flow of traffic.

#15 - I've said it before, and I'll say it again - PLEASE stop saying, "Don't leave a gap." In many states, it is ILLEGAL to block side streets/shopping center entrances. You're actively encouraging people to break the law. At the end of this clip, you can clearly see traffic is stopped, and there was no room for the drivers in either lane to proceed through without blocking the side street / lot entrance. The law is in place to keep cross traffic moving and/or allow emergency vehicles to get through quickly when responding to an emergency. Imagine if your loved one needed an ambulance, but they couldn't get through because people took your advice and blocked the way. This incident only occurred because the pickup driver appeared to either be using the center turn lane in an attempt to bypass traffic or they had to swerve into that lane to avoid rear ending the stopped traffic - looks like they were approaching dangerously fast and just looked up from their phone and reacted by swerving - I don't see their turn indicator!

Talking about the "leaving a gap" bit at 4:30ish in the video, there isn't a problem with leaving a gap to allow another vehicle to pull out when you can't go much further anyway, the issue is with the vehicle that's pulling out ASSUMING NOTHING IS COMING, they need to CREEP OUT SLOWLY to whichever lane you are in (they know it's safe to go out that far) BUT FROM THERE ON THEY SHOULD BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS SO VEHICLES IN LANES BEYOND YOURS BECOME AWARE OF A VEHICLE PULLING OUT & HAVE TIME TO SLOW DOWN & ALSO IF THEY AREN'T GOING TO STOP THE DRIVER PULLING OUT DOESN'T SUDDENLY APPEAR INFRONT OF THEM IN THEIR LANE, THUS CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. !!
