I heard these speakers paired with a Primaluna Evo 200, and they sound mind-blowingly good! I also heard them with an Exposure 3010 which was decent, made them fast and energetic, but the Lintons seem to shine with tubes. Wider, more holographic soundstage and deeper bass. Perfectly paired with the Primaluna

I listened to these in a small mom and pop hifi store while on vacation last week. They sounded great with no negatives that I could hear. Nice clean sound with great bass. The were on 18" metal stands slightly leaned back and about 12 inches from the back wall. Amp was a new Yamaha but not sure what model.

I like the form factor. The prominent midrange suggests the speaker is designed to be quite close to the wall or on the floor. I guess Wharfedale want a modern speaker with a nostalgic sound. They link like a budget take on the Spendor and Harbeth three ways. I guess they sound great with expensive gear attached. Large stand mounts on good stands are a great proposition in my experience.

Some manufacturing flaws are serious and some are just disappointing. The binding post, to my mind, is just disappointing. A turn of a wrench or a drop of Gorilla glue with solve it. Wharfedale has obviously chosen their battles carefully here, and their aim appears to have been a beautiful-looking speaker with a warm, musical sound to provide, perhaps, a Harbeth-like experience for those of us who can't afford Harbeth speakers. How close did they get? That's my only question.

These remind me of the Polk Audio Monitor 7, a popular speaker in the 80's. They look very much the same, however the Monitor 7 was a sealed box. I'll bet they sound similar. I have the next model up, the Polk Monitor 10's, and they are very musical. I'd love to hear the Lintons!

I've been running Diamond 10.2 for more than 7 years now with very, very little to complain about, except for slightly recessed mids, but only very slightly. I considered the 225s a couple times but didn't think they would differ enough to warrant the difference (and several I spoke with preferred the older 10.2 to the 225 anyhow). And, I have come VERY close to picking up a pair of these Lintons here over the past year... but never quite clicked "Buy Now". I'm instead going to dive in for the Evo 4.2 and am glad I waited. I believe they are what I am after. Time will tell.

@@jm-vq4cm Funny you mention this. That was over a year and a half ago. Never picked up a pair of Lintons but I did have the Evo 4.2 for nearly 2 months immediately following that comment... but I sent them back. I NEALRY kept them and do still miss them from time to time (mostly for their insane instrument separation for classical)... I tried a couple others, the Lintons were next on my list but just before them were a pair of Zu Omen DirtyWeekend. Those never left. And I've never loved a speaker as much as these. They still surprise me even now. If not my last loudspeaker, they'll be around for many years at the very least.

@therealchickentender
@therealchickentender 2 жыл бұрын
@@jm-vq4cm Hahaha. Yeah, no. (I know what you just saw if you peeked at their site!) The "Dirty Weekend" variant of the Omen was only between roughly $1,000 and $1700, depending on a how you chose to option it in a few ways and the finish chosen, so really roughly the same as the Lintons with stand at the very high-side. But they only took order for those once or twice a year, and sadly they've discontinued them as of a couple months ago - they were evidently a big loss leader for them for years. Their other higher end models are incredible, and I love a good set of speakers, but I don't think I could ever get myself to spend THAT much!😅 If you come across a used pair of Omen Dirty Weekend, give them a look/listen for certain. And also Zu has a crazy generous "trade-up" policy, so they occasionally have used Dirty Weekend Omens for sale on the site.

Bought them and I wholeheartedly agree with your comments on the midrange, Tharbamar, which seem to be severely boosted around the 1500 - 2500 Hz region. I have been using a set of these myself for a little over a week now. I have not had any issues with the binding posts on mine. As for the highs, generally they are okay. I have found them a bit grainy on some recordings. I agree with your overall assessment here. As for the midrange, it can sound wonderful on some recordings and too forward on others. So I agree with you here as well. As for the bass, I generally disagree here. I found the bass to be very good, tight and controlled. This may come down to the amplifier. I am using a John Curl designed Parasound amp with a lot of power and control. I think these are generally good speakers and a lot of value for the money. I did however find them to be tiresome over extended higher volume sessions. Maybe they need more time to break in? Comparing them to my Vienna Acoustics, there is no comparison. Then again they were one fifth the price. They are beautiful to look at however. Wife acceptance is high with these.

I love reading how many people under rated PMA2000 amps in western countries, with my LS50 this is amp is sounding better than Parasound Halo P5 & A-21 combination I had which is American designed with Chinese parts, same go for many other amps with western brands yet they will look down on real good quality piece of product. Denon have won more awards than any other amps in Japan even more than Accuphase and Luxman combined, only problem with them is they tend to underrate their integrated amps. I took the measurements with my technician when I did 10 years service, this amp put out 120w @8ohm, 190w @ 4ohm which is expected but what more impresses to him was bias is still within factory specs after 10 years, he said not many amps can do the same after 10 years, that is the real quality of the amp in my opinion, specs on papers will never tell the whole story, my Halo A-21 bias was different than factory specs after 3 years. If this amp can drive LS50 and Martin Logan Electrostatic speakers to full potential, it should not be any problem driving Lintons but everyone have different hearing and taste so, I'm not arguing, just sharing my experience, thanks

I think these may be better for larger room than the smaller one. Drivers here are spaced far apart. I like the elac ub5 compact design with teeter inside mid-range. The design of ub5 keep the sound close together using mid-tweet and having with that a close proximity to a small but musical woofer; the tweeter can be time aligned easier with the mid as well as the tweeter to use the mid-range cone as a horn of sorts to open up the sound for amazing imagery.

Denon PMA-2000IVR? I deduced it was $1000 when new, seems like good reviews online, good build quality, and can drive 4 ohm speakers easily. Too bad Denon discountinued, cannot seem to find an equally good amp in the same price range in their current lineup. But still, it bears mentioning your amp is not a Hegel or Accuphase or Pass etc. so it is hard for me to determine the REAL limits of the speakers you review. Also I wish sometimes you would review higher end speakers in the $2500 to $5000 category, just for comparison sake ...

This Denon is the old trusty reliable amp I have for longest time since 2006, it replaces Accuphase E305 in my system back then, in 2012 I bought a pair of Parasound Halo P5 & A-21 which I was hoping to replace this amplifier but I end up using both amps until I got tired of Halo sound and some build quality issues, I sold them in 2018 but I’m still enjoying PMA-2000IVR, Denon still makes them in new generation for Japanese market PMA2500NE but you can expect to pay almost $3000 for them with more features and similar power output, I tried Hegel H160 a few years back and quality is not in the same class as this Denon and over rated, let alone putting in same sentence with Accuphase. It’s just my experience, one day I might go back to Accuphase but still undecided, thanks

@@Tharbamar Hegel 160 is overrated? I owned that amp and it is a good amp, but in your mind it is not in the same class as Denon? You mean KEF and Joseph Audio and other high end speaker manufacturers should use Denon rather than Hegel? Interesting point of view. Too bad you don't live in Vancouver, would like to come by and hear your Denon!

It’s a good amplifier for sure, I tried it with ML Electrostatic speakers it was ok, I was demoing against my Halo P5 & Crown XLS1502 Amps before I bought Halo A-21 amp, cheaper combination of P5 and XLS out performed H160 in my demos, also label is misleading for where is Made, why can’t they say simply Made in China, for $3500 amp I can get better build quality than that from Yamaha, Denon and Marantz etc., I have no problem with buying Chinese made products but I have no respect when a brand doesn’t clearly state where is made on the product. Everyone have different taste, I never take seriously on what others use or like because I tried and trust my own ears than other people opinions because this hobby is subjective and personal. In the end as long as we enjoy our music listening experience, that’s all that matter to me, thanks

@@Tharbamar In Denmark with 25% vat, the Denon PMA 2500 is priced at $2000,- (Hi-fi Klubben with more than 150 shops in Europe are the distributers), I just bought one used for $1500,-. It plays alongside a Kinki Studio ($2500,-) and a T.A.C. V60 (Vincent brand tubeamp, $3500,-), and it more than holds it own. It's not better but different.

Hi, I just bought a set of Wharfedale Linton speakers. And they sound amazing. Immediately I'm confused because I can't figure out which speaker is right or left. In the package was the model that should be right, with the Wharfedale logo on the left side of the treble. Same with the package where the model should be left, here with the Wharfedale logo to the right of the treble. In both cases so that the treble is facing outward relative to the listening position is in the center. I cannot find information on Wharfedale's website about the correct placement of the speakers. However, several reviews on the web say that it is important that the Wharfedale logo is facing outward as the listening position is in the center. So that the treble unit turns inward with respect to the listening position. What is right and what is wrong? I have set up the speakers as the right and left speakers as described on the package. But WhatHifi among others describes it as the wrong set up.

I'm sorry but bought these and returned it after 5 days of trying to get the best sound out of them, I used a decent tube amp for just stereo, a Sony AV Receiver, 2 power amps one for each speaker and have to say these things dont stand out in any setup, also it doesnt excel in any sense, maybe a few old hill Billy tunes it sounds ok but anything modern dance its nasty, as part of a surround for the TV or Home Cinema is dull, overall Treble is not sharp enough, base non existent, need a sub, the midsize sound muffled unless you use the tube amp, overall really disappointing, when you compare these to let's say a more modern type similar priced floor standing speaker from Klipsch/Dali/Jamo etc these speakers dont hold up, sorry it just doesn't.

Recently I read, it depends on the speakers and you would not hear a difference on cheap speakers. I've recently I connected them to speakers that cost about same as the Lintons, and there is a good difference from having them single wired.

It looks like the only thing in common with the original Linton speakers is the name. The originals were a 2 way unit and some what smaller. As for the binding posts, no excuse for that. Very poor design and zero quality control. I used to sell these in the 70s (original of course!) They were a popular budget loudspeaker. They had a popular sound but not very accurate, in HiFi terms. It was known for the tweeters to fail, after Christmas party's we would always sell a few replacements!! Talking of quality control, upon opening one speaker after a customer complained of a rattle, I found a screwdriver clinging to the magnet. I still have that driver today!! The stands should NOT have items filling that space, nothing but AIR only. If you fill the space it will sound different. Might as well stand it on a box.

Terrible binding posts. The lack of a biamp option is a dumb decision. There must be tons of diffraction around that "frame" in the front. Open them up and look inside at the materials and the build quality. The drives are removable from the front - it is trivial. What is the cabinet material? Is it pressed cardboard like the Diamond series?! Any bracing? What is the xover like? Electrolytic caps? Iron-core inductors? For $1200, you really want to know these things, and more. What about power handling? Can they play loud, and how well?
