What 1958 HS Students Felt Their Futures Would Be Like

I have been a collector of old films like this one since I was a kid. I used clips from many old films in my television series on the 1960s and in my feature documentary, Sputnik Mania, which presented what happened in America in 1958, the year after the Russians launched Sputnik. It is fascinating to hear what High school students who were from the early part of the 60s generation, early baby boomers, felt their future was going to be like. To me, many of them sound like their parents.

@@sammymillerman High school graduates are generally 17-18, so the class of 1958 would have been born in 1958-18=1940 to 1958-17=1941. 2020-1940=80 so I would say that's right on the money. I think it would definitely be interesting to have a reunion of all 10 students, find out what they did with their lives, and show them the video and get their reactions. But the truth is, most likely at least 3 would no longer be alive, and there is some chance that one of them died young.

2019 students "college should be free." Colleges take advantage of student loans and charge what ever they want because government will pay it if students don't. Need to hold colleges more accountable and it will be cheaper. No reason a family or person should be still paying loans 20 yrs. Later.

Strange that I came across this video and your comment. I'm 45 and was recently recalling memories of adults laughing when I answered their questions seriously and thoughtfully. It was embarrassing and kept me from speaking my mind. Now I understand it caught them off guard and their reaction was involuntary. So now, as a grown man, I don't ever belittle someone for having less experience in life or assuming their youth is a detriment. Everyone should be heard and respected until they become disrespectful of others.

I don't think this one video with the intention of obtaining the thoughts of teenagers will give us insight into how adults back then treated teenagers with an opinion. This is a weak argument because truthfully, Community College is VERY affordable for those that need the help. BOG Fee Waivers and Financial Aid end up putting students at every Community College I've been to in the positive... we all have actually gained more money than it costs each semester. This was the case at Antelope Valley College, Santa Monica College, and Compton College. All of us. I don't know a single student that complained about losing money because even the ones that came out of pocket (like me) got the money from the school. Furthermore, it's not uncommon at all for people to finish their undergraduate programs at real Universities with 0 debt because there are so many programs for people from low-income areas or if they're a first generation college student. AND if you couple this with doing your first 2 years at Community College, then you really have to put forth an effort to rack up some debt. At this point the whole "college is too expensive" thing is almost a cliche, tired argument that's been addressed for those that actually need to/want to attend. If we're talking undergraduate degrees then it's a good hypothetical but falls apart when put against reality.

Community college is pretty cheap though. Like a thousand a semester if you're full time. The only problem with community college is that a lot of them don't offer 4 year degrees, they just cap off at 2 years. That's why people just opt to go to university.

For the sake of argument let’s say they are 18 at the moment of the video. This is in 1958. So at the youngest they are 78 and more likely in their early 80s. I am a member of this very group. I would have graduated from high school in 1958, except for the fact that I quit school after grade 10 so I can work on the farm. This went well for a few years, but I had an intense interest in electronics that eventually led me away from the farm. I first did a home study course in radio and TV repair, then worked for a while in that trade as an apprentice and picking up more skill in that field. Wanted to do higher level work, so I went back (part time) to pick up a few high school courses to allow me to enter into an electronics technology course. Got real lucky and was hired by Honeywell in 1965 to work as a mainframe computer technician installing and maintaining their equipment. That led to a 25 year career in the mainframe computer field. I moved on from the technician role to programming and software development in my new role in customer support. The mainframe business died off in the 1990s and when I was laid off from that, worked for a dozen years as an independent computer consultant until I retired. My education continued all these years with a mix of self learning, on-the-job training, and taking night classes. This worked for me but probably is not a good plan for today's generation. Start early. Get a part time job and get some experience in the work world. At the same time, start to look at future career options and what it takes to get there. You can do it right here. Just type in "machine learning" on the search bar above, and you will see a range of selections giving additional information in that field. If that is not your thing try "brain surgery" or "cardiac care" or whatever it is in life that interests you. Then prepare yourself by getting the education needed to succeed in your chosen field. Have a 'Plan B' in case your first choice does not work out. As we go down the road of life we sometimes change directions voluntarily or because of outside factors. Be ready and adaptive to change. And finally, good luck. Sometimes you just get lucky.

For everyone saying teens back then seemed so well spoken and mature, consider this: Back then, people weren't used to being recorded, and, when asked to participate in something being recorded, the expectation was that you wanted to pull out the best and brightest and you wanted everyone to look polished and make a good impression. Today, since we record ourselves all the time, there's no longer a feeling of wow this is being recorded so I want to sound good. I don't think the people back then were necessarily so different, I just think the expectation of appropriate behavior in public recordings was different!

That girl was completely right in saying that knowledge is never waisted. But when I say that it doesn’t mean necessarily formal knowledge. But everything you learn, can’t be taken away from you. College is a great space to learn because you have great teachers who will make you question the way you see things now, and also a lot of other students with whom you can share your views and learn from theirs as well. But it surely isn’t necessary if you feel like that isn’t your path. Just keep studying whatever it is, keep learning. It will be handy at some point.

Generally speaking, knowledge is never wasted. The article, graphs, and data did not show anything about whether or not Republicans think cost of college should be reduced. It's displaying whether or not Republicans believe college has an overall negative or positive impact on the country. And here it actually proves against your point. Up until 2015 it shows that Republicans do believe that college has an overall positive impact on the country. Only very recently has it switched. "As recently as two years ago, most Republicans and Republican leaners held a positive view of the role of colleges and universities. In September 2015, 54% of Republicans said colleges and universities had a positive impact on the way things were going in the country; 37% rated their impact negatively. By 2016, Republicans’ ratings of colleges and universities were mixed (43% positive, 45% negative). Today, for the first time on a question asked since 2010, a majority (58%) of Republicans say colleges and universities are having a negative effect on the way things are going in the country, while 36% say they have a positive effect." Now also it does not say anywhere in the article provided why they had such a polarizing switch on view of college recently. My take on the reasoning behind that switch is that Republicans maybe are feeling that the cost of college for what you get is too high and at the end it still does not guarantee you a job or guarantee an increase in standard of living. I believe a combination of media becoming echo chambers for their ideology, as well as the media and other common social outlets used in dividing the parties, and the cost of college increasing is what makes these Republicans have a change in view. But anyways, keep generalizing all Republicans go back to your echo chambers. The fact that it seems you have either barely read the source you have provided is unsettling. I am not even a Republican and I felt compelled to say something.

Expensive? I’m from Texas, north of Dallas, if google is somewhat accurate, community college is $3-4K a year, A&m is 12k a year. What’s that? $30k for tuition total. I know room and board is a factor but 30-40 grand is NOT expensive and well worth it.

So interesting. Even back then women had more of a “progressive” mentality. Maybe because men never had to compromise between career and family and at that point in history women could “have it all” if they chose to. And to hear that black gentlemen talking about marriage and family in that way was kinda nice. I hope he accomplished his ideal family scenario.

Interesting because now the divorce rate is so heavily initiated by females who think in such a way, seemingly produced by women like these with respects to their influence onto the next generations. Nearly 70% rate. 1 in 4 women are registered for mental health drugs in their adult years to ease the lonlieness and anxiety of work life. And often these ladies end up single and shaming everyone but themselves for the way thei lives turned out. Doesn’t seem it ended up as well as they hoped when they were only 18. Might be better to use this as an example to lead our next generation from making the same mistakes.

@@LotusHart01 Women are more naturally inclined to family life. Just like men are naturally inclined to building careers that will successfully help to support their families. But that doesn't mean both sexes have to stay in those classic roles. They both should be able to explore what fits best for the individual. Plenty of women homemakers that never had even the opportunity to have a career have been miserable as a housewife and raising children was not their thing. And some men are finding out these days that they are perfectly capable of being a homemaker. We all should take personal responsibility for the choices we make in life. But we should have the choices and strive for the balance needed in all areas of life.

@@LotusHart01 the lesson future generations need to learn is to make marriage worthwhile for women. The rebellion from then and the consequential divorce rates now stem from women being treated like servants that exist to cook and clean and breed and don't deserve to have lives of their own.
