I did a little judo not a ton but I have quite a few highlight throws. I got really good at one or two throws since I was like 13 that I sort of naturally figured out and refined when my bjj club got a judo coach. it carries me far whenever I face a new opponent; if it’s a newer white belt I just KNOW I’m going to have a highlight throw. Unfortunately my foes who know me well don’t fall for my throws anymore and now it’s a real grind looking for new takedowns and better approaches. Good fun! Good work bro! Maybe one day we’ll get to throw eachother!

A judo green belt or blue belt will have a huge edge in the BJJ white belt division. He could work the system by throwing, standing up and separating, and then repeating the process over and over again to rack up points.
@J3LYA20 күн бұрын
Yeah I thought about it but i decided it would defeat the purpose of me competing. I only practice judo, I’m going to these tournaments to see how I would do in a BJJ ruleset, fighting guys at their own game. Also, the ref will penalize you for being passive, which would include standing up every ground engagement. Anyone going to a BJJ white belt division with the sole purpose of winning is missing the point lol
@ludwigwinter679517 күн бұрын
It might work against white belts, but BJJ players can frustrate judokas quite easily by simply pulling guard. I know a very good judoka who started to compete in BJJ and he rarely scores takedowns in tournaments, because as soon as his opponents realize that they are outclassed on the feet they immediately revert to butt scooting and playing bottom game. The top player has to engage or will get penalized for stalling. And even getting up and away from a competent BJJ player after a takedown is a lot easier said than done.

That’s very accurate. Judo definitely helps with BJJ more than the reverse. Especially since newaza ends if the opponent can stand up or lift you. I agree, the average judoka has pretty bad ground game. I think a big part of that is competition judo. We’re sort of taught to just go to turtle/belly down and wait to get stood back up.
