It's why there's so much drama, all the scheming and backstabbing and ladder-climbing. Not really he pretended constantly that he was sleeping with that lady and she was basically sold to him by the empress for power the dude could never give her a great life or kids but none of that mattered to the empress even the emperor was like we do not do this. So when the her husband did this and she showed the abuse she was suffering it made empress look really bad and he lost a ton of respect for her after this. He was always doubting her after this.
