Hi Justin, love your show. Re: violence at R&R shows. At CBGB’s I witnessed Jayne County slam a microphone stand into Dick Manitobas shoulder blade breaking it- he had been shouting homophobic insults at her the entire show until she lost it. It was an ugly moment to say the least and worse, I brought my 9 year old nephew with me that night because I was babysitting. Talk about ruining the mood. Bad parenting moment as well. ( it was the ‘70’s) 😬

I'm surprised that no VB bottles were hurled at the stage as the curtain closed. Australia's getting soft. Hey Justin, Pleeeease look up the greatest Australian band of all time, The Stabs. They have a few proper film clips, but they also have some pretty wild live shows as well on YT. I can't send links but there's a show at "The Pony" in Melbourne that's notorious. Great music too, pretty sure you'll like it.

@arikohlson2222 I absolutely love his music, but Anton clearly has severe psychological and substance abuse issues. He seemed to have cleaned up a bit, at least by Anton standards, the past few years after moving to Germany but this tour it seems he's back to his worst habits. It's so strange, if one were to only listen to his music without knowing anything about him you would never dream such music would come from someone so ornery and abusive to everyone around him.

I was at the Enmore show a couple of nights earlier. At the start Anton filled a very tall glass with Skinny Bitch: vodka with a little water and a lime slice. Sure it wasn't his first that day. Joel Gion had left the tour DURING the concert in Hobart and left the band "for the 86th time". The replacement percussionist was not up to scratch, could not even waft the tambourine for Anemone, the simplest of all movements. The drummer was playing too fast and Anton was getting more and more aggravated. Van Kreidt at some point said into the microphone for everyone to hear: "There are reasons why people get killed", looking at Anton. Anton asked van Kreidt to leave who responded with threatening to hit Anton with the guitar. Best therapy session I watched in a long time, confirming my own sanity.

I've been a musician in San Francisco since the late 90s, Anton is definitely notorious for behavior like this. I remember once I played on the same bill as BJM and while Anton said a few odd things to me, I came away thinking he was a pretty decent fellow, despite his reputation. Years later I was reminiscing with the drummer of my band at the time and he said, "Remember when we played with BJM and Anton pulled a knife on me!'

BJM - Both the best and the worst live band I’ve ever seen. When Anton’s drunk/high/manic, it’s awful. But when he’s healthy and in the moment, his art is absolutely transcendent.
@louisvandenberg2153
@louisvandenberg2153 6 ай бұрын
I regard Anton Newcombe as one of the truly great artists of rock. When I first saw the classic BJM lineup, back with Matt Hollywood, et al, , I came away thinking they had serious talent -- combining style elements of the Beatles (note the prodigious song-writing), the Stones (per the Brian Jones namesake), the Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, and more -- all channeled through Anton's voice and vision with authentic compositional artistry. I saw BJM do a three hour twenty minute set a few years ago that was brilliant -- close to perfection in its execution. I saw the current tour in San Diego and all the tensions described in this JHRA episode were present. Opinion: this looks like classic alcohol/drug dependency with its cascading consequences to and through personal/family life, work relationships (band members, agents, bookers, venues, and finally fans, patrons, show-goers) and everyone else. This kind of thing is unsustainable on both a personal and group level. It will take anyone down, even someone willful and accomplished like Anton, who may think he's exceptional. Unfortunately, what I saw was a situation looks close to terminal. Why would anyone want to go on tour with Anton again after his display of poor judgment and destructive invective on stage? How could you trust such a person? As a touring musician, you're investing your time, money, reputation and then Anton erupts. You're isolated, far from home, trapped within a bubble of Anton's increasing, madness and chaos -- a nightmare in which you must rely on someone you can't rely on. Anton's acting the victim, but his real internal collapse is, in reality, a betrayal of everyone. Anton has had a good long run, perhaps unparalleled. Who has written more songs which are actually good than Anton? To get well, he must admit that there's a problem. Then, the way back to health opens. What I see instead is denial and rage disguised as a sham of artistic integrity in an impossible, and dishonest, quest for perfection. Anton uses this as a pretext to attack the band members, upon whom he has projected his illness. Health is a choice, followed by sustained effort. It can be achieved.

I know why these things happen. I lived on the road on tour as a drummer, and after years of sitting back watching, observing the machinations of band politics, it dawned on me one day… there was always a terrible coincidence… you won’t believe me… it was pot noodles. Yes pot noodles. If you go through history and analyse all of the band fights, the breakups, all of the problems stem from.. pot noodles. Bands, after years and years on the road, giving in to the inevitability of coming into contact with these evil things.. eventually they get inside, and wreak havoc and destruction. Now I was all for them in the early days, but when they released chicken and mushroom, I knew it was the end. It’s hard to talk about, I still get flashbacks.. the sound of foil opening. RIGHT !!!! that is the point that a lot of people seem to be missing.....He was only on hard drugs for about 6 months and Dig emptied that -- but year later He started mental illness meds around 2010 or before ===but he couldn't drink on it - made him crazier. Doctor warned him, but he did anyway and he ended up back in crazy house -- But the meds worked so well he just '"put the bottle down" like a hammer. In this interview by a therapist before a crowd gathered for it, he seemed disgusted with his former self, said "DIG" made him feel like a. "cockroach" but realizes it's all a part to the narrative. He kept getting better and better as the years went by. By the time Covid came, recorded and released songs day after day for folks in lockdown.. HE read the comments and made some of his own -- He works 6 days a week and demands the excellence that he demands for himself. and he can be really cruel about it. But his BIGGEST problem right now: SOBER UP AND GET SOME HELP. JHMO. Where is the wife? he needs family support. So he climbed, as he used to do it back then, and security got him back multiple times, song was stopped, he started a fight with them, argued with them and was obviously told that he could not do that because it was a tent and not made for climbing on it and then he threw his mic on the floor and it was over after, let me guess..., only three songs. What a great concise reviewer, he explained it brilliantly. I was once playing in a band on tour in Germany where the guitarist had a hissy fit and marched out. Oops. My advice based on experience is, don’t mess with drummers. I’ve seen cymbals thrown like frisbees and drumsticks effectively meeting their intended targets on more than a few occasions. Sadly this kind of behaviour doesn’t always decrease with age. We saw some very poor behaviour from musicians of a certain age (who definitely should have known better) at a small village fair gig this summer 😂, priceless.

I played a gig at ground level in the front corner of a bar about 30 years ago, there was a pole in the centre of the corner that I had to lean against to be in my usual position on "stage", {2 guitar band}, I had a guy with foul breath 2 inches from my face yelling requests and spitting his foul smelling spittle in my face, I looked at the bouncers a couple of times before I'd had enough, As he approached for another request {about his 10th attempt}, I head butted him as hard as I could, he hit the floor, the bouncers dragged him out and we didn't miss a beat, we also got a standing ovation at the end of the song, It was a cover of Lou Reads "Take a walk on the wild side"...haha....True story

I saw Lemmy stop a show in Milwaukee before they even started. They came on and someone immediately threw a beer that absolutely soaked Phil and his guitar. Lemmy said something to the effect of “if you want to see the show and you see someone about to throw something, CRIPPLE them. We don’t fuck with stuff being thrown at us.” It worked. I don’t know if anyone was crippled, but they played the rest of the show without incident.

I think you're being too hard on yourself. If you're playing keys that cost more than your car, it's correct in my belief to enlighten idiots that do such a thing that it won't fly. I've never done anything like that and it's probably because my Mother would have slapped me into next week for it. He/she probably lacked proper upbringing and now that they are an adult, it's come down to another adult telling them what behavior isn't tolerated.

I used to be a BJM fan. I became a super fan of Miranda Lee Richards because of her involvement with them. I'm assuming that she left the band because of their drug taking (not positive). I saw them in concert back in the 2000s in Boston and Northampton, MA and there was no fighting but I don't think the other lead singer was with them anymore. I forget. I lost touch of what they've been up to but apparently they're up to something. I wonder if any of the original members are still with Anton. I can't imagine he's easy to get along with for very long. My guess is that fights like that on stage are fueled by drugs and alcohol (don't know though). I don't care for fighting at concerts. When I pay for a show, I want to see music, not a row. I'm more interested professional performances. Antics like that are for the playground kids!

Love that person shouting "Get him!! Get him!!" 😂 Not usually a one to endorse violence but there's so much comedy in this shambles. Favourite part: Possibly at the end where Anton makes a speech akin to a British dj at birthday party (minus the "Shabba!!!"), taking a bow to the floor then seeming to have a go at the audience for booing what was clearly a magnificent BJM gig 😂

I'm afraid all this shows is how bad musicians are at fighting. I played a gig at Kilwinning Youth Club in Scotland where our bass player pole-axed a stage invader with his instrument without dropping a note. That same night a young lady who was tripping on acid thought she was a whale and spouted out a huge arc of cider, which splattered all over me and my keyboard. Great times.

My favorite part of Dig was when Anton was meeting with some record company execs…and the first thing he did was place a Freemason ring on the table. As some sort of power move. So funny. I’ve seen BJM maybe 5 times, and each show was beautiful and chaotic. One show, in San Diego, was sheerly terrifying. Anton jumped off the stage and literally started strangling a frat boy/chad-type. After the chaos, he returned to the now-empty stage, and said to a now-full audience, something like “he was trying to hypnotize me with his eyes and it was a threat. I was only protecting my mind!” That’s not a direct quote, but it’s a pretty close paraphrase! Hilarious. Great band. The new stuff rivals their heyday jams! Thanks Justin. Always a fun time here. x

I've got to say, I saw them in 2016 and it was one of the top five shows I've ever seen, easily. They played for more than three hours and they were completely locked in. No fighting, no long pauses, no yelling at the audience. I saw them again a few months ago and, while it was still pretty good, there was a lof of tension onstage and Anton was berating the drummer the whole way through, goign so far as to stand directly in front of him and stare at him while he was playing at one point. I saw an interview in the Guardian a while back where Anton was drinking again and combine that with a nearly year long tour and bad things are going to happen. It;s really a shame, because when they're on, they're really top level

right -- I've been saying almost the same thing to many of these posts -- he quit drinking in early 2010 I think -- COVID stressed him out because he started putting out songs almost every day -- and got a flood of praise from folks in Lockdown...it became a regular thing...check out Anton's song of the day --- many ended up on these two new records -- and then her went on tour --- this tour seems to have never stopped. the US and UK twice, South American, Australia -- that's too much for a band without big backing. And I have no doubt that Anton can be a complete asshole and be sober as a judge -- but Id' rather see him sober.. Correction: I do NOT want to see him drunk onstage anymore. @@rodrigoroa6753

Saw them again in 2018 at the Metro in Sydney - the infamous rape joke show. It started well, they sounded amazing, then it all went to hell with Anton becoming increasingly obnoxious to the audience and other band members. I couldn't make it to the most recent one at the Enmore in Sydney because of illness, so gave my tickets away - and apparently that gig was awful for all the reasons the Melbourne was, but not as intense. I love their music and that first gig was incredible ... but they're pretty much unwatchable now. Hope they can turn things around, but things could be too far gone.

I've seen the BJM many times and it's always verging on chaos. I've never seen one performance where there hasn't been underlying tension. The first time I saw them they spent most of the time sharing cigarettes between each other on stage, the music was entirely incidental. The gig just got going and the 11 PM curfew ended the night with only a handful of songs performed. I think Anton causes the tension for effect, for publicity but doesn't include the rest of the bandmates in on the gag so it's contrived but looks authentic.
