Everybody is talking about him right now. Johnny Depp's personal life has captured a large proportion of the populations gaze during that infamous defamation trial with Amber Heard. However, we are not going to talk about the trial we are going to discuss his return to music and his latest guest appearances with the legendary Jeff Beck. We all know Johnny Depp is a great actor, but is he really just trying too hard to be a rockstar now? He may look the part, but can he play it? Let's discuss using some footage from those live shows just after the trial ended in May. The title is just a provocative question, not a statement so please, any hardcore Johnny Depp fans, don't destroy me. I have played with Johnny before and have the utmost respect for him.

Ive seen Johnny Depp perform on guitar, live at least twice now. Once he did a surprise on a couple of Marilyn Manson's tour a few years ago. And another when he, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, and a few others started up the Hollywood Vampires. I always preferred the musician version of Johnny cuz he just looks so much happier in that state. I missed him on Jeff Beck's current North American tour but he will be back with Hollywood Vampires in 2023.

Wow. I was watching one of those Top 10 Hardest Songs to sing things and saw The Darkness,, on it. I was in shock of the sound of your voice in it, so I sought it out on KZbin and couldn't get enough. It was awesome when it came out way back when, (almost 20 years ago). So it was great to rediscover you and then I thought where is the band now and found this channel and You. I am amazed and totally blowaway. Still going, still playing and singing and having near pitch perfect while singing your intro. Its so nice to see that you haven't lost any of your unique vocal talents over the years. You are truly inspiring. Happy Belated Birthday as well. Based on your title for this video I actually expected to hear you trashing Johnny and I was thinking I am not going to like this one bit. However to my surprise your commentary was refreshing and genuine. Being that you have also first hand experience of playing with both Johnny and Jeff even better. And yes after what Johnny has been through over the last several weeks, nice to see him getting back to work and his first love. You are what truly inspiring human beings can be, genuine, nice, knowledgeable, helpful, kind, brilliant, down to earth as well. So thank you so much for giving him credit for having some chops and telling the world some of the great stories. You are truly one of the greats yourself. I am so glad that I found your channel and am able to tell you how much your music was a big part of my life growing up. And how its getting a second chance now I have rediscovered it. Thank you once again. Best Wishes to you.

Many moons ago my husband and I went to a Stevie Ray Vaughn concert with Jeff Beck. My husband, a bass player and song writer never published, was on a high for days. When Jeff passed that man cried. He was in a few non existent bands in the late 60s. He can go on endlessly about all those guitar players, and band mates, you speak about and I have now turned him on to your channel, having come across it recently. When he saw you interviewed Beato he had to stop everything and listen. BTW, love that Hedy Lamar song. What a fascinating woman. Johnny's ex had absolutely no idea she was witnessing magic with those old men.

Thank you so much for posting this, it makes me smile even though Jeff Beck's unexpected departure still makes me cry. Jeff and his wife Sandra didn't have kids, but took in Johnny and kept him with them when he was going through so much turmoil. Jeff Beck helped younger musicians (like Tal Wilkenfeld), who many people thought were his biological children. Johhny Depp and Jeff Beck doig John Lennon's Isolation during covid was heartfelt and compassionate. Now excuse me, I always post too much and am a dweeb.

Been following for only a few videos recently and just realized who you are Justin. I've been playing at a rehab in Indiana every weekend for 10 years, and I have a sheet of 430 songs people choose from and I perform it on acoustic (unamplified) while sitting on the floor. Despite covering many genres I don't care for (Country, Post-Grunge) my faves to play are classic rock and power pop (Kinks, Badfinger, Heart, Cheap Trick.) Some have sadly never been chosen (The Pretty Things, Sloan and She's Not There?!!) One song that gets chosen somewhat often and is a blast to play is I Believe in a Thing Called Love, but I admit my falsetto impersonation of you on the chorus is pure cheese and always gets a good laugh.

My question really is, Johnny's age gap between him and his ex never changed. And they were only married for less than 2 years. I think she knew her acting carrer path was limited and short and thought attaching herself to Johnny would prolong it and also she would get some of they Captain Sparrow money after a few years. But yeah to refer to Jeff as an old man.is not a lie. But saying it was boring is amusing. Just picture random days of him and either Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck or Mark Knopfler hanging out noodling on guitars.. Pondering what Amber would not call boring?

@@eirikrdberg1161 Well, it's a package deal. I agree with what you say and he's also very funny at times, very aware and insightful at others, and sometimes he's just putting out good information that everybody should know like the fact that Powerage is AC/DC's secret best album beloved by Keith Richards, Eddie Van Halen, and Malcolm Young himself. I personally think the lyrics are at their greatest and Malcolm's playing is at its greatest so Malcolm obviously had every right and reason to pick that one. It was just flawless and the two brothers seemed to have one mind even though they played different parts.

@@VolvoImpala kinda weird. I have every single ac/dc album, except for Powerage, which I for some reason haven’t even heard. Real weird. Always been aware of it out there. The dumb sleeve and that it is a pre highway to hell Bon Scott album, which automatically makes it interesting opposed to the crap after blow up you vhs player in 88. Never have I heard the razors edge either. Had moved on to prog by 1990 and despite being back to playing my metal Lps and cds that I thankfully never got rid of razors edge is still not on the agenda. He played slide guitar on ‘Fade In Out’ off of Be Here Now. Noel went with Johnny, Kate Moss and Mick Jagger to Mystique island and demoed the songs, may have reused Johnny’s takes from the demo.

I love the observation you discussed at 6:05 where you mentioned that Joe Perry perhaps overplayed a little in the presence of Jeff Beck. I can totally imagine it. Whenever I'm in the presence of someone I really respect, or even just other musicians I want to impress, it's quite easy to get swept up in it and overplay. It's interesting to hear about it happening even amongst the heavyweights.

After the release of all the videos of the times he got on stage with other bands throughout the years, I'd say no. He just didn't share that side of his life with us until now. I'm happy he stayed true to his first love behind the scenes. Glad he can do it on a regular now. I'll be seeing them both next week. Thanks for this, nice way of saying he's legit.

Yes, he moved to L.A. from Florida with his band. The others eventually gave up and moved home and he stayed. And he was spotted by a casting director (I believe for 21 Jump Street) and offered work. He was broke, so he said yes. The rest is history. p.s, other actors started as musicians, too. Michael J Fox and Brad Pitt come to mind.

Johnny seems to be a good judge when it comes to choosing who to appear on stage with. When I was 15 my first ever boyfriend was a bass guitarist and used to rave about Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin. I prefer John McLaughlin, but both of them are excellent!

Well done Justin! Jeff Beck is one of the only players from 'that era' who kept evolving and kept reinventing and refining his art. He doesn't need to ride the current Johnny Depp wave for publicity as he does not need it. You can see that he's being very genuine and very real as he introduces JD. They're very similar - Jeff Beck plays guitar to support his passion for hot rods and Johnny Depp acts to support his passion for music. Ride on and ride again Justin Hawkins!

His hot rod passion I just recently learned about, but he must have passion for the guitar as well. Kinda weird to know this guy would be in the hall of fame if he retired before I was born. That is a bloke getting a lot out if his years among the living. I really like wired and the album before that in the mid 70s. R&B based electric guitar melodic enjoyment.

There was an audio recording of him saying he had head-butted her.
