Vic was a thief, a drug dealer, a gangster, and a murderer. He had one last chance to walk away and start anew, but chose a life of crime out of greed, spite, and vanity. His short life was just a natural consequence of the path he chose.

I loved the fact that he killed Vic. Oz wasn't there for the conversation, but when Sofia and Sal came to his apartment, she was talking about how one of his strengths was that he had no one he cared about, which was untrue at the time. Despite not hearing that, he learned that lesson. Vic is one of his only remaining emotional connections and also the only person that knows his secrets. Given the way the scene was played, I don't think he went to the park with the intention of killing Vic, but saying that he sees Oz as family led to the only possible conclusion, that this is someone that could someday turn on him when he's inevitably disappointed by Oz's actions and then reveals something about him. Or he could be a person that can be used against him like his mother was. Never again. And you can see that regret in his face about what he's going to have to do, but it's absolutely necessary to take the next step and become a completely different type of criminal. It was pretty much perfect.
@AT-rr2xw3 күн бұрын
He had to kill that part of himself. He had to kill that part of his heart. People said that Vic was the heart of the show. And the heart had to die. I mentioned elsewhere that he still kept his mother alive (against his wishes) and kept Eve alive as well. I thought that maybe that was because they were not his minions and would not interact with his minions, but that maybe he would reevaluate his relationship with Eve if he knew that Sofia had gotten to him. Someone else suggested that he was keeping Eve in the penthouse indefinitely as punishment for ratting him out.

Don't take him at his word, he'll lie to anyone, including himself. This may be the best representation of a pure psychopath I've ever seen. Also, the way they've explored the psychology of the characters in this universe, I know there's a bit of exhaustion with the Joker, but I really want to see how Reeves approaches him.

Was starting to get pleasantly surprised Vic was actually going to make it through, until the word family came out of his mouth.

It's crazy how ruthless and psychopathic he is once the mask is fully removed. He will kill everyone else quick and fast, but when it comes to his family and Vic he savours the more drawn out and more tortured deaths for his closest 'loved ones'. I also think he saw the relationship Vic was forming with his Ma and, just like Benny and Jack; they had to go so he could keep her all to himself… just like the little bird.
@lockekappa5002 күн бұрын
I dunno, I thought he saw it as family made him weak. Which to me didn't really make sense, since his family (mother) is what has driven Oz this entire time. So to me the narrative themes there feel a little off. I could see if he killed his mom, or she died, and then he realized she was holding him back this entire time. But he didn't and she's still around. So I don't see how Vik is someone who will make him weak.
@myohmyDesign2 күн бұрын
@ because if his mother did ever wake up and Vic was still around she could tell him everything and it's all just a weakness he's not gonna take. He wants his mother to himself.
@lockekappa5002 күн бұрын
@@myohmyDesign Ok, so it all boils down more to not a "family" thing, but a "f*cked up relationship with mother thing" Man I feel like f*cked up mothers are such a constant theme nowadays. I'm watching 3 shows and they're all about this subject lol.
@myohmyDesign2 күн бұрын
@ the Penguin's back story is supposed to be a 'cracked mirror' version of Bruce Wayne. Bruce became a monster BECAUSE of the loss of his parents, whereas Oz was born a monster and he was nurtured to be an even darker monster because of his twisted relationship with his mother. They both could have turned out differently, but they still became their own monsters.
@kyu2o3373 күн бұрын
I appreciate that you recognized that she was going to have him killed right away. Seemed pretty obvious to me, but I saw several reactors that missed it until it was explicitly said by Sophia. Also, a lot of group reactors chatter so much they miss subtle things, I like that you actually pay attention. Props.

Wow! What a hell of an episode. I was wondering how Penguin would get through all this. Wonder what Sofia is going to deal with and that Julian guy seems to be back to how he was before 🤔 I wonder about him. I was also wondering if Selina and Sofia would connect somehow so the letter was cool to see. Oswald Cobb is TRULY something else. I absolutely hate how dirty Victor was done. The one truly loyal and clutch character, he really did deserve better than that. I can't believe he's gone, but Oz let Eve live who's now dressed as his ma 🤦🏻♂️ Even his mom is trapped in her own body while looking at that view she always wanted. This series was tremendous and I really want to see what this Batman sequel will bring and how it will tie things together.

Yeah Vic's death is a bummer. But beyond just the weakness, I've heard other compounding reasons might be that Oz is probably worried Vic would one day turn on him just as he and all the #2s did, and also if he wants to run for Mayor, he needs to cut all ties to his criminal past, "look clean", as the councilman said.

I would say that the show did a great job at making us sympathize with penguin and showing us the attributes that made him look decent. Like the way he treated Vic, standing up for him, acting like a father figure. But like Rex said “if you want loyalty, you take the ones, who need a father figure and use that” I think the Oz manipulated Vic with everything he did to make him look at Oz as a father figure. And he also manipulated us because we fell for it. Really great writing and character development. And possibly character development in ourselves, now knowing that we fell for his narcissistic manipulative gestures 🤷🏻♀️

I've seen Oz's relationship with Fran compared to Tony's relationship with Livia, but I would say it's closer to Norman Bates. In other words, it's worse. I had Eve pegged for death since Ep 3 so the fact that she made it out was a surprise. Oz killing Vic was fantastic and made up for most of the issues I had with the show. Mad respect to the showrunner for having the balls to commit to making Oz a monster. Poor Vic.

My heart wanted better for Vic but now I'm squarely and securely anti-Penguin which is the perfect spot to end leading up to the next movie. Jimmy they had to make Penguin the villain at the end which is what his life had led to, if you look at Carmine and what he did to Sofia, and Rex, who was willing to kill a child, this is what it takes to be a top grime boss, pure.Evil. Even Kingpin killed his own father. Regardless Penguin is still a complex, charismatic character that you can't help but be intrigued by. The only reason I wouldn't say its all time best comic book show is because of the lack of action. It's more story driven, but action For me, as always important, when we're talking about great comic book shows.
@SidPhoenix22113 күн бұрын
What a GREAT show. Top tier performances from the main 4 actors. Oz is SUCH an irreedemable piece of shit and I LOVE that. It's great to have a layered VILLAIN (not an anti-hero, or shady guy with a heart of gold). Can't wait to see Batman beat the TAR out of him lol
@suncore5983 күн бұрын
2:50-3:01 It took you a moment but you got there in the end. LOL. I shouldn't be surprised that Oz's mother figured out what he did. She is the mother of the Penguin after all. But her almost having her son killed in retaliation. Wow. The show really goes to some dark places. And that was only the opening to the finale. The way Oz concocted the lie about Sofia and Sal being at war is very Heisenberg. As messed up as Sofia being sent back to Arkham is, I'm glad she didn't get killed. She's too good of a villain for that. I hope we see her in The Batman Part 2. Watching Oz kill Vic is like watching Walter White kill Jesse. So wrong. But not out of character with the Penguin. No one or nothing is sacred to him except his mother. 20:42-21:17 Oz needs a therapist ASAP. 21:22-21:30 Perfect.
@aaronhuff28133 күн бұрын
You can't beat The Penguin. Not really unless you kill him. The only thing he cares about is the game. If you knock him down he'll just claw back and love doing it. I do still love Oz because of what he makes possible for Batman. Corruption task force means Harvey Dent/Two Face and I'm all hear for that.

@ripcity00662 күн бұрын
Vic was the last faint thread of conscience left for Oswald, a kind of moral safeguard in this crime-ridden farce of a world. Through their complex relationship, we even start to feel a strange affection for the Penguin. Because yes, Oswald Cobblepot is still a villain - but in this series, where goodness is already rotting away, we find ourselves strangely wanting him to win. Then, everything changes. In an instant, Vic’s brutal death shifts the whole dynamic. Suddenly, the dark “hero” we were rooting for with guilty devotion becomes someone we want to see fall, and fall hard! Now, with no one left to challenge him... who will avenge our Vic? WHO??? His selfishness becomes painfully obvious, almost pathetic. And when he stands before his mother in that final scene, seeing her tear and mistaking it for a sign of joy, he blinds himself to the truth until the end. That tear means nothing of the sort: remember, she made him promise to end her life if it ever came to this. But now, Oswald has lost every shred of nobility, both for her and for himself. And the tragic irony is complete. When he finishes Vic, he delivers this sentence: “Family makes you weak.” Yet who does he keep close to him but his own mother? He held onto this final bond just to keep her for himself. Certainly not to share her with Vic.

I mentioned this elsewhere, but if the show's treatment of family interests you, you might want to read a piece that showrunner Lauren LeFranc wrote in 2017 called Supermom, about something that happened to her when she was a kid. Or...more accurately, how she felt when something happened to a friend of hers. I will warn you that it is quite disturbing and its resolution is hauntingly incomplete.

Hollywood take notes: a VILLAIN should always stay a VILLAIN. They can have nice attributes such as being smart, charismatic,funny, etc. but they should always still be bad at their core. This series was a masterpiece in showing that and although I absolutely hated the way that Vic died it displayed the true selfishness and sociopathic nature that Oz had since childhood. I can’t WAIT to see Batman kick his azz lol
@kriegerdog68073 күн бұрын
This is nothing less than a Batman villain origin- we see what a fucking monster The Penguin really is, we see a character that is worthy of being the villain to one of the greatest heroes. He really is the fucking devil, I agree with you that the roller coaster of rooting for him a bit, before really getting to see what he truly is a damn masterpiece. This is Anakin becoming Vader, this is a show that made me so satisfied with the writing, the direction, and it used its power to totally gut me in the end. Killing the kid who said he was family, breaking his most important promise to his mom by keeping her alive instead of letting her die with dignity.... Batman needs to break his good leg and send him to Hell with Sofia so he stays in Arkham forever. This was one hell of a show. My last wish is that Pattinson gets a chance to make this Batman a character that we will remember, with enough screentime and love put into it to make him an equal yet opposite Penguin. Only getting a chance to be seen in movies will be tragic, he has to eventually gets screentime like this.

The most poetic justice to be had, to close this Reeves-‘verse and show Batman earning his ‘Greatest Detective’ mantle, is if Batman uncovered and put Oz away for Vic’s murder. It’s a fantasy but it would be true justice.

That'd be dope. idk how that'd be possible tho. 🤔

Me neither, but I’m not Greatest Detective material! If I had to guess, Bruce combs over cold-cases, spiraling into guilt, then he notes that distinctive handprint on the one John Doe, and indent that matches a certain ring, etc.. The Penguin being able to skate off numerous crimes and borderline supervillainy only for Batman to expose a callous murder, that he’d probably end up forgetting, to put him away would be phenomenal.
