They were magnificent to watch in period, and they're just as magnificent to watch today. The Historic Trans-Am cars did not let anyone down when it came to providing some proper racing action at Sonoma Raceway. Even the 1964 Pontiac GTO got involved in the action.

Just awesome! I never thought I would ever see the Gray Ghost on a race track. I read about it back in the 1970's when it first ran at Lime Rock and almost won the TransAm race in the rain. I didn't even know it still existed.

Must have been '71 There wasn't any real rain in 1970 and the podium was Boss 302 , Camaro and Challenger.

The guy that built it was Pontiacs top suspension engineer. I have his suspension design and tuning book. Herb Adams is his name.

yes! this is racing! I would have loved to see an early camaro Z28 thrown in the mix too. that Pontiac Tempest was amazing. this video is the real deal. great driving.

John HiIdebrand's car is the Gray Ghost Pontiac Tempest, to be exact. - it's not a GTO. It was originally built in 1971 by a group of Pontiac engineers lead by Herb Adams. The car was originally Herb's wife's daily driver.

⁠@@Pontiac428T/A had a 305cu in limit.With the huge valves in these RA/V heads, they had to keep the bore size,dropping 100” of displacement by destroking,only.With the small cubes and massive valves,they had to be revved to 9000 rpm to get ideal intake velocities.I think these engines,with a milder destroking to 366 cubes,hurt some feelings in NASCAR,tho.

@@stuartstephens there was a Pontiac in SCCA racing in 1968 running in A sedan, central division. Gave the pony cars a hard time. Fun to watch.

I recall there was a NASCAR race here probably 20 or more years ago when the TV announcers were joined by the Smothers Brothers, who were locals and owned a winery in Sonoma.

These guys that race the vintage trans am are a special group. They thrive on the motto 'I don't want to win, you win, wait it's 'Joe's' turn (back in 5th place)', and so on. The announcers play it up, the crowd loves it. But after seeing the show about 50 times in the last 20 years, a bit tiresome. But more power to them, their formula really works, and is a welcome addition to any vintage event.

Shelby had his own Trans Am team. His cars were Mustangs.... hence, Shelby Mustang. The #2 blue Boss 302 is one from 1969.His team won the Championship in 1967.
