Hey, CS! Thanks for another lovely video. Tip: if you check out content from vanlife channels, you'll see more options than you mentioned. For instance, Lady G Tarot (lives btw sticks & bricks and car/van camping) uses a bottle for #1 and mylar bags for #2. She says you can't smell anything once it's sealed in the mylar bag. Also, a guy who customizes camper vans uses a toilet system that seals the contents of each toilet visit in a separate mylar bag. Again, he claims there's no odor once the stuff is sealed in mylar. Probably not as sustainable for Mother Earth as you'd like, but I just wanted to share some more options and where you might find them. You seem like a guy with an open mind and I like the way you think things through. Safe travels and bright blessings. 💖

Thanks very much. I really want to research where I can get composting done as I think it’s potentially viable but I just haven’t found a place that takes it. Not sure I’ll go down the cat litter route though 😂

Hi really good vid thanks , but just in case you weren't aware , for pump out toilets you can purchase your own pumps from a company called Lee San. This means if a person's boat was stuck in ice they could still pump out into 25 litre barrels then empty at elsan

That’s a great shout! Definitely did not know and that could be really helpful for a lot of people!

I've noticed solo constant cruisers made a point of having the thought of needing to emptying the cassette as a normal "chore" its helped them to keep ontop of the check list and making waypoints so they do not catch themselves being empty of water, gas, firewood/coal. Which is a great point. I can see myself doing that unless I had something constantly reminding me "I need to be sorted" So having to do the nasty job once a week or every two weeks or how often I will fill it on my own I know I'll make a habit of checking everything else reducing the "Oh, I want a shower but ran out of water" moments which I bet happens more often than people like to admit lol (Having shampoo in your hair still and out of water completely at 7pm dark, unable to travel to the nearest point)

I know someone who bought a brand new boat with a pump out toilet. It leaked under their floor. Compost toilet is great. Ive had mine 4 years.

Where / how do you empty it? Do you have any tips on finding somewhere to deal with the composting side of things?

I'm working on a design for a catapult toilet... (Fun fact: the tank for a pump out toilet is often *under the bed*. That soothing gurgle and slosh *isn't* the canal.)

Who you gonna be firing it at? 😂

Just a thought but a marina with a pump out facility would also have toilets you could use even when icy. Having said that I would chose to have a cassette toilet (with at least one spare!)

It’s mainly because when I wake up, I almost instantly need a… that Marina toilet it’s too far 😂

I agree, I think Elsan is the safest bet for all the reasons you've said! Have you seen that there's a bike company in Londinium that collects the solids from boats with 'compost' loos? If they did that across the network then it might be an option.
@CutSluice7 ай бұрын
I have not seen that… that’s really cool… business idea???

I reckon I could get around the entire network in a day! 😂

I think calling them composting toilets is long gone. No composting occurs in the toilet. It is just a separator with a kitty litter tray under it. I would imagine the vast majority still ends up in black bags in the bin heading for landfill so not at all green. Also the urine disposal if you are moored in a city? Where are they tipping it, directly in the canal no doubt 😂.
@CutSluice7 ай бұрын
I’d imagine you are rather accurate with what people do… and you are absolutely right… no composting occurs in them, it’s just what people have been called them when I’ve spoken to boaters on the subject.

We have a pump out, its expensive and a constant worry that it will leak, we thought about a composting toilet but disposing of it is the problem, i will not put poo in a bin, in plastic bags its not right and not environmentally friendly and its not composting
@CutSluice6 ай бұрын
Exactly that. The infrastructure is not there for composting to be viable from what I can tell. I do hope this will change.

I've not seen a macerator on a narrowboat (only on a cruiser) thank you for letting me know.
