This great musical got passed over when it came out in '69/'70...Midnight Cowboy, Catch 22, Bob & Ted & Carol & Alice, The Killing of Sister George...not exactly an audience seemingly screaming out for an old-fashioned musical, though it's grown in stature over the years. It's a very touching scene and thanks very much for posting it.

Peter O'Toole deserved the 1969 Oscar for Best Actor for Mr. Chips over that mailed in performance of John Wayne's True Grit.

I saw this movie as a teenager, when it first came out. Peter O'Toole taught me how you meet the woman you'll marry. It took me to my late 30s, but I learned the lesson well.

i believe i said "leaving John Wayne aside". You honestly think it's some kind of travesty O'Toole didn't win for this over the others I mention? Theres no question he should have won an oscar at some point in his career, but for this role against this competition, it's far from clear cut unless you are especially blinkered.

Richard Harris' version is so much more gung-ho. But then everything Harris did was gung-ho, and I love him for it !!

Hmm, leaving Wayne aside (and i find the suggestion that one of his most famed performances was "phoned in" bizarre), theres the small matter of the other nominees that year: Hoffman and Voight for Midnight Cowboy and Richard Burton for Annie of a Thousand Days. It was a strong group that year, one could make a case for them all to win.

Peter had to stretch his acting skills to pull of Mr. Chips. I didn't see John Wayne stretch himself in yet another western, and a mediocre western at that. Meybe he appears to turn in a better acting job than he actually did, because aside from the lesser roles Bobby Duvall and Jeff Corey their isn't a lot of great acting performances in True Grit. Need I metion the two other main characters played by Glen Campbell and Kim Darby?
