I visited Vilnius last summer. I expected nothing - and fell in love with the city. It felt so calm and yet alive, wasn't overrun by tourists but still super guest friendly. Unfortunately I only had two days there but I will certainly get back soon since the city found its way into my heart. The city's tourism board created the motto "Sorry if the Vilnius you see beats the Vilnius you imagined" - and it is so damn fitting.

Oh my, you got to Vinius on serious powerful overcast day! What a dreadful weather. The brutalist Sports Palace will be completely renovated. During last 20 years couple of new modern Sports Arenas were build so the brutalist palace won't be a sport venue but an Exhibition Palace. It also stands on old Jewish cemetery, which Soviets buried under concrete and tarmac. It will be opened again as a memorial. The old trolley buses actually - surprisingly - not Soviet made! (as everyone thinks). They are Škoda! Not many of them left and this is last year we see them. 70% of trolleys already brand new, more on the way before 2024. Trolley buses are very specific vehicle, it is hard to replace them because there aren't too many producers. That is why they keep portion of them still running. No one hates them (even locals). P. S. You missed 95% of the main touristy sightseeings. No one who has one day in here goes to see Sport Palace, concrete apartment blocks or palace of weddings😁 Vilnius has Unesco Heritage Old Town which happens to be the largest in Eastern Europe. Also Vilnius is the greenest capital of Europe (officially) - three quaters of city's 401 sq km area are forests and parks. Only 100 sq km is build up.

@Heather Truskinge Actually there are a lot of proper travel blogs about the stunning & beautiful Baltic countries-the greenest in Europe where 50% of the country are forests, lots of rivers, lakes & hundreds of miles with white sanded beaches along the Baltic sea. Rich culture & history, old castles, palaces & mansions, cozy small towns, all 3 capitals Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn are cities from the UNESCO World Heritage list, good food, cozy atmospheric cafes, pubs, restaurants, parks, museums I could go on and on...those countries, cities are worth to be properly explored, such 1 day pop up in a city shows very little. @SteveMarsh I have fond memories of Vilnius and seeing your tour through the city was a walk through Memory Lane. Thank you very much... If it is Soviet-Style architecture you're after go to Berlin. You can see the Stalinist appartements on Karl-Marx-Allee or Cafe Moskau. Remnants of pre-war Berlin can been seen in Köpenick or Spandau. The city centre of Berlin is very modern due to neglect after WW2 and it was a revenge for not voting Communist in 1946.

I visited Vilnius for work in February/March 2007 and the temperature was around -10°C but it did get down to -18°C with lots of snow so you were fortunate with the weather. I was wondering if you would visit the KGB museum - I didn't know it had another name. I started chatting to one of the staff and he immediately said "You're from Scotland" and I'm thinking "How do you know that. Are you ex-KGB?" Paranoid or what. It is certainly an interesting place. The old town is wonderful and some of the churches are fantastic. For great views I visited the TV tower which is out in the western suburbs. I also went to Trakai castle which is about 30km from Vilnius. Well worth a visit. I hope to revisit one day during the summer.

As a Lithuanian, i am glad you liked it. Lithuania has changed, A LOT since we left Soviets. 15 years ago, it was still unsafe outside at Dark. And i mean - you were almost guaranteed to get into trouble. About our history and how recent it is: Well, my Grandfather was Freedom fighter part of "Forest Brothers" and it makes me proud how most of the world celebrated WW2 victory, our boys had to fight for freedom. It was Brutal, it wasn't nice but it gave clear sign, that you can't take peoples freedom if they don't want to. Also, one of the most Epic thing Lithuanians did (together with Latvians and Estonians) was "Baltic Way" 2.5 million people making Human Chain to protest peacefully for freedom at 1989. Making it 690km long chain of hands, connecting ALL 3 Baltic Capitals. And i was there. I was 3 months old though, but i was. My parents told how everyone was United. There was Free busses going to the event. People using their own transport, taking everyone they can to give a lift. Nobody worked that day. Grannies making cakes and Tea, people Singing, swinging hands. Most beautiful thing i ever heard.

Brilliant video Steve, the architecture is stunning in Vilnius. Never realised you were born in Cumbernauld. That's where my schooling years where and was up at the town centre most days. Still not sure about that building mind you🤣

I like your style. The certain randomness, catching a bus going somewhere, just exploring "off the beaten path" is something viewers appreciate, i think. You're also very respectful and kind : ) A lot of us Lithuanians get butt-hurt if someone shows our country as a soviet style brutalism place, as it is not something we CHOSE to build :) But from a historical perspective, these soviet leftovers are interesting. Especially for you, who is looking at it through the eyes of a person who never lived in this regime. Good luck in your journeys.

Thanks so much! Really loved Vilnius and it's given me the push to explore more of Lithuania in future. Totally agree re brutalism - I'd never try to pretend I understand it from a local's perspective, I just see it as an architecture I love and very much as a tourist :)

Hi Steve…we spent three days in Vilnius in 2014 during our rail and ferry journey from London to Tokyo. From the looks of your opening sequence with the angled windows, we stayed in the same room in the same hotel. As a longtime fan of your channel…we’re honoured. Your walkabout brought back some memories…especially the “torture museum”…😢. Thanks so much for your videos…😊

Steve what a wonderful journey! I’m sitting here in East Tennessee wistful about your tour of Vilnius. It reminded me so much of what beautiful Ukraine must have looked like before Putin’s egomaniacal war. I am smitten by your big heart which shows through with every journey and each word spoken along the way. God bless and stay safe along the way. And Thanks for all your hard work. Maybe some Rick Steve-like documentaries later in life? 🙋♀️💕

This video. Old Buses. Look cool. Electric Trolleybuses replaced trams. Glasgow had a big fleet of them until they were all withdrawn in the late 1960s.

Thanks, Steve. In this video, you well-balanced the inevitable train/ferry/hotel with a cultural and historical trip around the city. I understand not taking photos inside the history museum, but a few minutes of discussion and reflection outside would be most welcome.

Vilnius was my fav of the Baltic capitals when I went in 2015 - took a trip out to the TV tower on an old style trolley bus (took a few goes stood on this complicated crossroads to find the correct bus stop) and stayed in Uzupis which had a village vibe about it - couple of attractions that have interesting stories behind them Frank Zappa statue and the “Stebuklas” tile - Alumnatas Courtyard has an elephant chessboard and a cracking view of the Presidential Palace. Šiauliai in northern Lithuania with the hill of crosses is also an interesting place to visit - there are local buses out there but are not very frequent hence I had a 10k walk back into town.

Cumberland! Classic comment Steve! I really enjoyed that look around Vilnius. Your "lick your finger and see which way the wind blows" way of planning your days makes it more fun (for us at least) and at least you didn't end up in a tumbleweed train station in the middle of nowhere in the snow. BTW, loved your opening comments to camera out of that window - you're some Kevin Costner! 😅

Brutalist Concert and Sports hall is in herritage list, so it can't be demolished. There are plans to use it for business conferences. The neighbourhood you ended up in is called Fabijoniskes and was a filming location for Chernobyl 6 mini series with HBO.
