I'd love to hear about your English journey! How long have you been studying English?
@Bagya-wq9ql7 ай бұрын
I have been trying to learn English for over three years. I don't know what level I'm at now. I'm learning on my own. It has been quite difficult but I don't care cause I love the language so much. You are an inspiration. ❤

With the love for learning English, you'll get far! Thank you for your comment. That's great that you have the courage to use English in your daily life, like here in the comments. Here's an online test that can help you understand your level of English (approximately): www.cambridgeenglish.org/test-your-english/general-english/.

I started learning English at age 10 in school. It was pre-internet, but tv-shows on Tv wasn't dubbed and my local library had a few books in English, and they also had National Geographic and Newsweek. The music that was popular was written and performed mostly in English. I fell in love with English instantly, studied for 4 hours a day. After three years I was the best in my class and could read crime-fiction,sci-fi,fantasy(at age 13) fiction for adults. It was not age appropriate?? But I used the resources available to me at the time. I had a dictionary with 140000 words that I tried to learn by heart. With many descriptions of phrasal verbs and other comments. But sadly no grammar book, I didn't even know they existed, and that grammar played such a big part. I learned almost nothing at school, and continued to read and write every day until high-shool In high-school I was put in the advanced class. Everybody spoke fluent and no one knew any grammar. We practiced grammar, writing and speaking, it was so nervous to stand in front of the whole class and give them small " lectures on our topics of choice, or a classical book. After one year, advanced English was over. I missed the challenge, lost motivation, had no idea how to progress in my studies. I went back to just listening and reading for many, many years. Now I'm back! This time I'm going to reach c2 level in writing, reading and listening and c1 level in speaking.

I´m an odd person to be on your channel however, not really when I explain. The foundation of my introduction is, I NEVER studied a foreign language, neither in school nor independently. I was your typical unaware, oblivious American until COVID. On May 1st 2021, I created my at home University, for which I chose Spanish. Before anyone talks about how easy Spanish is, they need to understand that Spanish has more native words than any other language (1.000.000) of which only 100.000 are included in the RAE, of which 30,000 are verbs! Spanish has all the complexity of Latin and the depth of Ancient Greek and Arabic. So, not easy! I was able to dedicate 8 hours per day for 2 years and I consider myself fluent now. I did it by understand 2-phase solution. Reading and Listening are Input skills. Writing and Speaking are Output skills. Read, learn new vocabulary. Write to make sure you have the grammar. Listen to comprehend and mimic to communicate.

Excellent tips and impressive dedication to achieving your goals! It's a misconception that Spanish (or any other language, for that matter) is easy. Yes, some languages can a bit easier than others (relatively speaking), but they still require a ton of effort (and time!) from the learner.

Not only that please tell me an authentic source where I can learn academic writing format very very accurately like paragraph, essay, precis, notice, reports. You know there are a lot of resources to learn that but they all show different format and I get confused which one to follow. That's why I think you are the only person who can help me learning the authentic writing formats for academics.

Really interesting to listen to student journeys (as you said at the start), listening to your great structure and near perfect language I am curious if you are talking naturally (I know you said at the end that it is scripted) but your prosody and enunciation is a "little forced" - in other words I feel you are trying as hard as possible to be clear (which we might do in some circumstances for short communication) but it wasn't very relaxed, I wondered if this was for your target audience rather than your natural style. Anyways prosody is a big interest area for me - I apologise for the unrequested feedback, it's a great video!!!
@LadyGiraffeEnglish11 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for the feedback! That's fantastic! This video is scripted (I'm not following the script 100%, though), and I do try to be as clear as possible. The a "little forced" part is probably the direct result of that. I'm more relaxed in conversations (with the people I like), and I'll try to work on bringing my more relaxed self to my videos. Learning and analyzing prosody is so much fun! I'm learning Greek right now, and its intonation and rhythms is so much different from English.

That's absolutely not true! You'll never be too old to learn a language. And the skills you learn along the way can be really useful for your career, if not the language fluency itself.
