Yes, Nigel did a cracking job! Just a small dent costs about £250 for a pull out and respray so yes, small details cost a lot to repair.

I'm following with a keen interest, as someone who did spend 4 years selling new and used vhicles at a main dealer some 25 years ago, but have spent my life around cars, with my late father owning an MOT centre and servicing business. I'm keen to get back into "occasional" tradng, potentially with 1 or 2 vehicles to part fund semi retirement (+ drawing down from private pension) in the next couple of years or so, when I reach 55. It would be interesting (to me) to see what sort of costs and paperwork you needed to initially get set up (trade plates, tradrers policy, business insurance, exposure to HMRC regs etc) as I'm hoping this type of buying/selling/prepping activity would busy me for 2 to 3 days a week when I look at early retirement. The last 25 years have been spent in a digital sales and marketing enviroment, so customer/people skills are on point, but the basic framework of formalities around car purchase/sales admin, a little less so. Your channel is certanly puttig lots of light on AI and data, which is something I'm not shy of intergogating either. Keep up the good work!

Hi and thanks for watching. I did cover this in a previous video but costs are fairly low. the insurance is about £110 a month, trade plates are about £140 and, £30 to register with HMRC and then the auction house fees to get signed up BCA is free, Manhiem is about £70 and the others are about 50-80. If you've got marketing skills and handy on a computer then the uploading of images etc will be a piece of cake. you then just need to buy the right cars. There is a mid week video coming out that shows how i use spreadsheets and AI to do this! Stay tuned!

Great episode Sam. So many different things going in your business this week and gives us lots of content from you. One little thing I would like to pass on (from experience). Never use the word 'Cancel', as it comes across as a very final and closed kind of word. I always found that it was better to use 'Postpone' as that still leaves it open and able to go forward.👍 With regards to the other regarding repairs, I would definitely make sure the car was 100% before selling to a customer as, at the end of the day, you want to establish a good name in the business.

Always wait until the vehicle is 100 % ready, run it around for a bit as well, saves all the hassle, bit daft taking bookings then having to disappoint people, worst scenario is the cars not ready for a few days and the advert looses steam, people don't want to think anything about their new car other than it's had regular services. You've got to do the work anyway, so do it first. I sold one today, it was 100% ready, customers came and I ran it home for them, they really don't want to hear, oh it needs work, I'll let you know.

Well yes, I normally would but i had the car up for sale the day before the service thinking that if i did have an enquiry, I could book in a test drive having just collected it. I then had 3 enquiries! They are all absolutely fine to wait a couple of days. Not ideal, but I'm glad I got the interest. All three people know exactly what's happening to the car and one of them has said how appreciative they are to be kept in the loop. I guess it can work both ways as long you're just clear and upfront with the customer which can work in your favour ! Thanks for watching and commenting.

Excellent work on the channel I enjoy watching all of your videos. I wanted to ask a question. When you are buying cars from auction or off a private seller to then sell on yourself from home etc. Do you have to register yourself as the owner/keeper of the car as per the V5 document when you initially purchase the car? Or can you leave this until you sell the car on to the customer eventually whenever that is?

Thank you so much! No, dont register yourself as an owner, just go onto the DVLA site and bring the vehicle into trade. No new owner gets added to the V5, instead it tells the DVLA that a trader is handling the car and it automatically stops the previous owners tax. You can then only drive the car with trade plates once you have added the car to your trade insurance, which is usually just a 2-second job through an online form from your insurance company. I hope that helps

Oh I know what overheads can do! The new office is basically £500 a month in an idillic spot. It’s perfect for the brand and has a huge amount of parking space. When opportunities like this pop up, I’m usually pretty quick to evaluate, measure the risk and if so pounce! Let’s hope it all works out!

I’ve driven loads of new plug in hybrids and to be honest none of them got much more than 20 miles on a full charge. They are in fact pretty useless as once the battery is flat the mpg is awful.

Isn’t your VAT due on profits only? So you should include all costs on VAT due not just the sales price - initial buying cost.

VAT is chargeable on the difference between the purchase price and selling price of a second-hand car, not including all the work done in between

Thank you! I’ve used photoshop for years now and I use the adobe package for pretty much everything. I think I pay £8 a month for it and for me and the way I work, it’s a dream. Yes, overheads are a huge thing to consider but I think everyone is so individual and their skill levels are all different. For me, having photoshop or a tool like this saves me so much time, so I would consider £8 a month money well spent. Really appreciate your comment and I’m glad you like the video! Same

On your spread sheet, can't you claim back the VAT on things like the MOT, Clean, Parts, Service etc, so your VAT should be less no?

It won't be less. In effect under the margin scheme you pay twice and reclaim once. It is an unfair scheme.

Yes, I can claim VAT back for servicing and parts etc but there is no VAT on MOT's as its a government test. I keep the whole VAT amount in a separate pot as there will also be corporation tax to pay on profits at the end of the year and the surplus would significantly contribute to this.
