Smells are normally invisible, but an engineering lab at the University of Colorado Boulder uses lasers to bring odors to life. The scientists' experiment allows them to visualize odors as they move through space, an innovation that could help train dogs - or robots - in rescue missions.
The research is part of a new nationwide project, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, to build a robot that can smell.
