I read comments that said 'Queencard' originated from a korean slang 'Kwinka' and it's a term that's used to describe popular or hot girls. And if you noticed, the way they were singing Queencard (or Kwinka) is with nuance to sound like one or the other. This info definitely made me appreciate the music better.

apparently it's also how the movie Mean Girls was marketed in south korea, too. it translated to "how to survive as a queencard" or something along those lines. so many great references.

No disrespect but I think kpop songs has no meaning but just a bunch of random lyrics added to catchy tunes.
@affiqdarimy8094 Жыл бұрын
@@Ocean722 I understand your view and I agree (partly). Since kpop (or the music industry in general) are getting more and more saturated, everyone need to have their own strategy and approach in creating hits. Some sacrifice in the writing so they can make catchy songs so as you said, catchy but the lyrics seem to make no sense or actually don't make any sense. But then there are also groups that really go deep into the writing, discuss important matters like mental health and self love just to name a few, that really deserved to be appreciated. So it's not fair to say all kpop is the same. From what I discover in kpop culture, upon every comeback for like a new album or mini album, they will have a single track known as the 'title track' that is made intended to be the hit song to go global, get into charts and all to make noise which is good for their marketing. Title track is where they try to be most experimental, out of the box, different sounding, crazy choreography, when compared to others in order to establish their brand (hence why some are willing to go to the extent of not having good written lyrics but really catchy tunes). Those who discover the title track might end up paying attention to explore the rest of the stuffs in the comeback which tend to be more "normal" sounding, actual good lyrics, good message, more expressive, made for a better cause, etc. But there are also title tracks that do these things better than the other tracks in the album. Some encapsulate the message of the album as a whole and also set the tone or vibe for the rest of the tracks. This is why kpop is very interesting to me because even if I don't like it because of the lyrics (let's say it doesn't make sense), I might still like it for the dance, video production, concept, design elements, personalities of the members, the message they're expressing, and more. But this is from me who pays a lot of attention in different aspects of kpop and I totally understand your view as I used to think the same before I started to dive into kpop and understand better.

allergy and queencard are connected and when i watched both of them back to back, i am literally saying i cried when i read the "i feel you" at the end As a girl with insecurities about the way i look, i felt so comforted that i am not alone in this and that they see and feel us. 'I feel' is title of G-Idle sixth mini album, released the same day as this MV. This time, Soyeon used a concept of a TV show (that's why the previously in the beginning) and before the songs and MVs were released, there was a lot of material in the form of little episodes introducing the characters, their relationships and hinting on the storyline portraited in the MVs: 'Allergy' (pre-release) and Queencard (title). Queencard MV in fact is a direct continuation of 'Allergy', where SY (a self conscious, self deprecating version of Soyeon) finds herself desesperatedly trying to look like the popular girls, especially Minnie (who's like in the top of the social piramid) in order to be able to feel good about herself. Her arc ends with her going to get plastic surgery to do so. Meanwhile, what SY doesn't see is that every girl she looks up to have their own insecurities and self hatred. Like Minnie is depressed and lonely in real life contrasting her online persona. Miyeon, who Yuqi and Shuhua idolize, envies Minnie and wants desperately to feel loved. Yuqi and Shuhua don't feel good enough by themselves and want to be like Miyeon. So the Queencard storyline is basically Soyeon getting delirious with her anesthesic drugs before her surgery, when she finally understands that the only things that make one a Queenca is self love and confidence. At the end of the MV when she leaves the clinic after giving up the surgery, she realizes that people already liked her for whom she was, only she couldn't see before. Queencard was a slang used in the early 2000s in the US and currently popular in Korea. It basically means queenbee. In Korea the term -pronounced "Queenca" - was popularized as the title of Mean Girls. So the MV brings a lot of references like the battle dance from White Chicks. Soyeon has stated that she took a lot of inspiration from 2000's movies and fashion (you can see in the Y2K vibe, the old cellphones etc) and if you wantch 'Allergy' you'll see even more. She also said she wanted to make a song on the playful side.

3:31 Funny that you mention Mean Girls 'cus not only is the song, MV, concept etc. giving off that vibe, but as we can hear, they (purposefully) mispronounce Queencard by not including the final "rd" sound; the Korean word for "popular/hot girl" which is highlighted in Mean Girls is "퀸카" which is pronounced as Queen-ca, and the Korean title for the Mean Girls movie (퀸카로 살아남는 법) translates to "How to Survive as a Queenca." To think, there was once a time when Soyeon was planing on taking a step back from music this August... thankfully, she is now set on 30yo being her stopping point, though hopefully she will extend it even further as she gets closer 'cus I am NOT ready for a Soyeon-less kpop scene 🤐😩
