@VitaminJunkie5 жыл бұрын
I've been vegan since 2007 with a lacto-vegetarian break of 1,5 years in-between. I train powerlifting / weightlifting since 2011. I don't know much about Kendrick Farris. Maybe he is a cool guy and it's definitely cool when pro athletes go vegan. But I can't share all the hype around him. First of all he didn't go up a weight class since he has became vegan as claimed in the video. At least not at the competitive level. At the Universiade in Kazan (Tatarstan, Russia) in 2013 he competed at the same weight class as in Rio (94kg). Furthermore since he has become vegan his results didn't grow that much. Only by 5kg in 3 years (Universiade in Kazan 372kg and Rio 377kg). It still cool - at least it wasn't a regression and proofs at least that you can maintain big muscles and strength with a vegan diet. But you will not impress pro athletes with this, who have trained their whole life for olympic success and need significant gains from one year to the next - you will not convince them with Kendrick's example to go vegan. Sure such persons would be egoistic assholes and personal gains shouldn't be the main reason for going vegan but ethical reasons. But let's be realistic: almost all people are like this. Nobody gives a single fuck about others. It's all about our own ego / wellbeing. So we need athletes who gained all or at least significant parts of their strength only by vegan diet. Such an athlete deserves any hype. Also did Kendrick promote actively veganism somehow since then? Like for example Mac Danzig does? I didn't notice. LOL, I would be a greater example for gaining vegan strength :D I've improved my bench press as a vegan by at least 30-40kg (other 20-30kg as a vegetarian, which means currently my ORM is at ~120kg in bench press). But nobody gives a single fuck about me :D Fuck, anybody who gains more than 5kg in any weightlifting / powerlifting exercise is a better example than Kendrick. So in his case he gains popularity for only the fact of going vegan. I don’t think it’s jealousy, it’s just quite unfair, when people get vegan publicity for something that in no way is related to veganism. How is his relative success as a meat eating weightlifter has to do with veganism? It doesn’t. No body gave any fuck about him as meat eating athlete, because he wasn’t that good. But now he is vegan and all the vegans celebrate him. Same with Patrick Baboumian - no profit from winning a local (German) strongmen championship, but after becoming vegan and without any new records since then he get’s hyped everywhere and selling shitty vegan recipe books, doing advertising for non-vegan companies (which means the vegan hype helped him to gain publicity even outside the vegan scene). On the other hand the vegan idea doesn’t really profit from propaganda which is not based on facts. In opposite - assholes who think critical regarding veganism, they will laugh about such fairy-tale vegan propaganda and use it against it. Again I don’t want to attack Kendrick personally, it is still cool that he is vegan and I hope will stay vegan for his whole life. But please do something actively in favour of veganism since you profit from the hype. Or at least set any new significant (at least personal) records being vegan. I’m also just sick of people hyping any celebrities and promoting them as a positive example for going vegan. From my experience most celebrities are very bad examples for going vegan. They often try to improve their image by such “positive” things as veganism, but often are not really dedicated to it or even worth: after a couple of years they are not vegan anymore. And in case of athletes, many vegan propagandists are too ignorant regarding facts. They just hear something which sounds pleasant and fits in their propaganda and adopt what they hear without any checking for facts. Edit: ok one thing I have to admire: being a pro athlete it is a risky thing to switch the diet. So he deserve some respect for doing so. But on the other hand as I understand he didn't switch the diet for ethical reasons but looking for personal improvements maybe hoping this diet would help him to get finally some olympic success.

MrChiCity3 You're the one claiming that meat is better for building muscle than plants. The burden of proof is on you, my friend. You've never seen a jacked vegan? Well you need to remember that power lifters, bodybuilders and jacked people in general are very much a minority and vegans an even smaller minority so it's only logical you haven't seen a vegan who is ripped. Personally I've never even met a vegan so that just shows how few they are in number. You asked for some names. Very well, here's just a few: Patrik Baboumian (Germany's strongest man) David Haye (Pro Heavyweight boxer) Barney Du Plessis (former Mr Olympia, obvious steroid user but he won) Avi Lehyani (Power lifter) David Carter (Defensive lineman for the Chicago Bears).

Power lifters take steroids, that being said he still improved with a vegan diet while on steroids at least he's reducing the risk of a heart attack while taking roids
@larrymasterspowerbuildingc44776 жыл бұрын
He is an Olympic lifter. not a powerlifter. He trains 2 lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk. Powerlifters train 3 lifts for competition: the squat, bench and deadlift, and all do a 4th lift that is not a competition lift: the Overhead press. BUT... THE OVERHEAD PRESS is a competitive lift again in a new federation that is gaining some popularity: Strengthlifting Meets-- (squat, overhead press, and deadlift). He has to be fast as lightning, where as powerlifters have to be slower, but learn to produce great force under heavy weight. He does have to be forceful as hell, but his technique lies in how fast he can get under the barbell. Two very different styles of lifting. He's awesome though. kzbin.info/www/bejne/noLZmKmngtF4bM0

How are people questioning whether I vegan diet works or not to begin with? Your body needs a certain amount of macros, minerals and micro nutrients, where they come from does not matter. Every diet works if those criterias are fullfilled
@whodywei8 жыл бұрын
So where is the advantage of vegan diet??? Kendrick is a 94 kg class lifter, if you compare his performance to a 77 kg class lifter, let's say Lu Xiao Jun (176 kg Snatch, 204 clean and jerk, total 380kg) or a 85 kg class lifter, let's pick Tian Tao (178kg Snatch, 217 clean and jerk, total 395). He is really not that great.
@VeganMeatHead8 жыл бұрын
Well if you're comparing how he was before he went vegan to how he is now, most anyone would say he has improved on many levels. Comparing him to other individuals doesn't make sense because we're talking about the transition, not who lifts more. If the lifters you mentioned took up a proper whole foods plant based diet it's possible that they could become even better than they already are and I think that's what the insinuation of the video is.
@Cancellator50008 жыл бұрын
The only advantage you can maybe see from this is in recovery times and quality of life, which is purely anecdotal. There is natural variability within different populations, so it is hard to say anything from a sample size of one. The only real comparison you can make is that he wasn't vegan last Olympics and got 10th in a lower weight class and the Olympics before that he got 8th in that same weight class. Now he is in a higher weight class, finished 11th, and set a us record, so maybe it has done something for him personally.

There is no particular advantage to vegan diet for olympic weightlifting but he can still obviously perform as well. Chinese lifters are probably better not because of their diet but training methodology and I would say genetics. @abcitiseasyasonetwothree30667 жыл бұрын
You cant replace meat by just taking it out of your diet. And vegeterians from meat eaters in health terms arent that different. Cholesterol and saturated fat isnt needed in organism. Vegan doctors are suing the dairy and meat industry manipulation with people by advertising meat and dairy as good products and they are winning in the court, because of scientific proves. Meat and dairy industry is even going to universitys and giving them money to make study with not proper conditions or just with some false information and you can see it in the sponsor section for the study. Vegan community is growing each year and in our society we can get all the products we need to replace meat. There is even vegan "meat", it depend on ingredients and people who eat them, but a lot of people says that vegan meat is better, because of all the rich flavors in it. 99% of population is responding better with vegan diet. You will here the vegan name in future years more and more. There is too much reasons to go vegan for our society. - animal agriculture, health(the biggest reason for us to go vegan), environment(takes less space than animals to grow(they eat a lot of plants))and ect.
