"Dragunity" Completely ignoring the insanity Infernity could produce even during 5d's era, huh? Archfiend is often cited as being singlehandedly the reason why hard once per turns are so ubiquitous now.

YES FINALLY SOMEONE MENTIONED A ACTUALLY RELEVANT ARCHETYPE. You are correct. Archfiend and launcher at 3 were CRAZY for 2010. I honestly overlooked them because I was more focused on the field spell being a single card that actively sent and searched straight from deck. Infernity is a great example.

@@TheAverageGatsby Honestly? Was potentially crazy up until Nibiru released. Or at least at the start of when Links were introduced. When Firewall dropped in the OCG I tested what triple Archfiend and triple Launcher would do to the game if they went first. A field of monster negates, three Barrier in the backrow, and Firewall providing a compulse was a pretty consistent occurrence.

@@aliesterus1.023It was pretty funny when Infernity came back for "black infernity" and "blue infernity". What changed, oh well it's the same strategy, but there are different cards in the extra deck. Referring to cards lacking a HOPT as "5D's era" cards is hilarious. Now Bystials "keep the strategy in check", but with Creepy Little Punk I have a hard time believing that it's the last we will see from that deck. Especially after seeing Launcher come back to 3 in the OCG earlier this morning.

@@TheAverageGatsby I mean, I'm almost certain that Infernity is always at the back of Konami's mind when making new cards. The last time they got support, it just screamed "We are perfectly aware this archetype is one of two cards away from becoming absolutely broken, and we're absolutely terrified of allowing that to happen". Hell, look at how long Archfiend got stuck on the limited list. I'm sure it'll be a long while before we see someone doing something that breaks them again.

SAY HI TO MINIMUM WAGE!"-kind of variety. I could have minimum waged after class 5 preschool (that's not even finished - so what?) I did more than 13 years more. MINIMUM WAGE! "Hey! Let me introduce myself to you my name is social welfare. Basically you get 100€ less than minimum wage, but you won't have to do 4x40h labor per month". Social welfare it is. "Bürgergeld" without your signature under the "Eingliederungsvereinbarung" cannot be "made less". If you find any way to make 100€ in less than 4x40h, your basically better off, though it's slightly controversial. Look dude I went 18 years to school and you try to rip me off? Great video. The biggest roadblock I've faced with convincing my friends to get back into Yu-Gi-Oh! is certainly the pacing of the game. Not even five years ago, we were still playing 4-5 turn duels at locals, now it really is very flippy. Combo decks really took over the whole game design despite there being some very substantial control decks out there. My friends are typically braindead timmy-lovers, so they're having no fun playing aggro decks at the moment. I'm really ready for a new format in the future with hyper-limited handtraps and generic extra deck support. I just want to try it and see how it works out; Barronne should be a boss monster, not something everyone can shit out. Part of me feels like this started with Crystal Wing, but I know it was before that. However, Crystal Wing is really when it became apparent to me that the game was completely different than it used to be, and it's become a product that a lot of people just don't find entertaining. I think my best point to make is this: In a tier-0 format, what separates Yu-Gi-Oh! from Chess? The diversity of decks and the multitude approaches to deckbuilding are what made Yu-Gi-Oh! fun for me and my friends, a control deck that splats three backrows and one monster should be as potent as a zoo-tier combo board, and that should be as potent as a board breaking aggro play for game. The endgoal should be to increase turns to a healthier 4-6 per duel, reduce turn time, and increase diversity in deck representation. How you get there is another conversation, but that is where we should go towards.

Honestly, I've always held the viewpoint that making the extra deck more and more generic has changed the game in the worst possible way. I know it is not perfect, but at least I do not always see Baronne de Fleur with different flavors every time. Goat or EDISON isn't enough for me. We also have a modern trash deck for every release. You cannot play them in older formats, but it is also unplayable against other modern decks. . This game really needs a low-power format. Because every year, usually there are only 2-3 dominant decks. And the other 5+ new decks become wasted potential because they're "too weak" against the META.

I mean, record attendance numbers at YCS events, but go off? Until recently, with Konami suddenly showing no love to European players, the game has been booming. Most likely due to the TCG spikes from Covid. It's good to point out how yugioh won't be MTG levels of huge again. Considering how much backlash WotC has been catching off of printing, I don't think 2020's MTG is 2000's MTG levels of quality. @@TheAverageGatsby Record attendance numbers for YCS events, yet, local game stores are closing. Of course there is record attendance for YCS events because people have spent anywhere from $500-$1000 on a meta relevant deck. They want to get their moneys worth. Konami continues to pump out new product every 2 months with nothing but filler in them, local game stores are not stocking their products because they don't move and simply rot on the shelves. All card games experienced high levels of interest due to the free money that was pumped out via stimulus checks, unemployment, and PPP loans. This wasn't exclusive only to yugioh. The only card game that seems to grow and attract new players is Pokemon as they still have a successful TV show. Konami knows that they can't get new players and that's why they are extorting the remaining players with expensive meta decks.

@@Ayumu88 Yep, LGS closing purely off YGO sales, if only they had stocked any other card game. Outside of the outliers of Snake-Eyes and S:P Little Knight, the game has seen significant moves to be more friendly pricewise than it has been in years. Deck Builder sets usually get delayed interest pending 2nd wave support which is not great, but core/side sets have been doing great. Rarity Collection was arguably the greatest set of all time, and is planned to have a 2nd one due to how well the sales went. Anyone could tell you that TCG Spike during Covid was a very real. If you want an actual argument on how Konami is showing their hand, it's that we are seeing a HUGE push for retro support in the coming sets. Why extort a few players with shiny cardboard on the 2nd hand market, when they could key jingle for a wider audience who get excited to see retrains of old vanilla monsters with a set revolving around Exodia.

As someone who is studying to become a game designer myself I found this to be very informative. I can see your points and understand them, but I do think from an accessibility point of view yugioh is currently failing. It’s really difficult to get new people who have never heard of it into the game because most people don’t want to spend the time learning the complexity. As you pointed out in your video, yugioh was a very different game 10 years ago than it is today. …which makes me wonder just how sustainable it really is. If the game has changed this much in 10 years, what do you think another 10 years will do to it? How much more powercreep is there going to be for the purposes of selling new cards? A lot of games can end as early as turn 2 or 3 - and there’s a gimmick puppet FTK on the horizon. I’m worried that as the game progresses it will become increasingly more and more sacky until no one wants to play it anymore.
@TheAverageGatsby
@TheAverageGatsby 4 ай бұрын
Complexity is such a tricky thing. If it's too simple, it's solved by the end of the week and no one wants to play. Too complicated, well then you end up like Artifact, a game that (imo) was excellent, but so overly complicated that it died immediately. If I had to pick a perfect level of complexity it would be somewhere between early Digimon and Marvel Snap. From what I've been told Digimon has spiraled out of control with power level, and Marvel Snap has done everything they can to punish newer players who didn't purchase the season pass by destroying collector's tokens/caches. I'm taking a break from the current ygo format because of how overwhelming Snake-Eyes is, but outside of Snake-Eyes the format is pretty cool. In terms of the puppet FTK, I'm shocked that the field spell was allowed to be printed, I'm interested to see what ends up happening with that when it comes to the OCG. Especially when you realize that unlike any other FTK, it is 100% in archetype, and the deck was allowed to have a number of custom cards because of how laughably bad the strategy was prior.

tangiental to what was said about the starter pack: the ships long since sailed but ive always felt rush duels are a fantastic bridging of the casual newcomer and competitive longtimer. its power sealing is low and easy to comprehend with tons of recognizable favorites from the most popular eras while also not being a format based around war of attrition and teaching players the importance of good deck ratios with its inherent mechanics and speed. the only thing it really lacks as far as training people is the removal of chains which admittedly is a huge part of defining skilled strategizing in YGO.

I don't think that Konami WANTED Yugioh to be a game where your entire play lines are completely consistent, it was just the natural evolution of a variety of small mistakes they made that honestly were not something that they could have forseen because TCGs were actually still relatively unexplored throughout the game's life cycle. Yu-Gi-Oh is basically the poster child for why searching (or really most methods of directly interacting with a card of your choice in the deck - adding it to hand, putting it in GY, or placing it directly on field) is generally not a good mechanic to have in a card game and its really showing that when we've got an upcoming deck that can FTK off a single card simply because of how much searching the game has. Thing is that by the time this was an identifiable problem (roughly around the time Ash Blossom was printed) there were so many decks that had a ton of searching so Ash Blossom was more like a band-aid, even if they stopped making search cards after that point all it would do is hurt product sales because, you know, gotta drive power creep. And to that level, with newer decks Ash only made them MORE consistent because being able to play through Ash was required for the deck to be viable. I don't mean to say that the huge shift in the game was specifically Maximum Crisis, just that was when Konami realized what they created and realized, "This might have been a misstep." It's why when Konami made Rush Duel, they still haven't added any search cards or, to the best of my knowledge, not even any cards that would necessitate shuffling the deck. Every card that interacts with the deck only looks at the top cards of the deck and either sends them to the GY or returns them to the bottom by design. It's fascinating and I think it's something that most newer card games are doing and it's largely because they realized from Yu-Gi-Oh that full deck searches make the games TOO consistent and also slow down paper play with a need to shuffle at least once every turn. Even Adamancipator for all its faults of being an obnoxious solitaire deck is interesting in that it limiting its search to "excavate top 5 cards" instead of just "special summon a Rock-type from deck" force it to play a LOT more in-engine cards than decks that can just search (I'm counting the non-tuner Rocks that they run over their lackluster archetypal ones as 'in-engine') and honestly the deck lost most of its steam not because their strategy in general got hit but because the repeatable searches they got via Block Dragon got banned.

I'd say check out the "how to approach yugioh" video I threw up where I suggest picking a linear strategy that looks appealing. If you're trying to avoid playing the combo game, I'd suggest playing a blind second deck where you just dome your opponent with things like Kaijus and board breakers. Playing on a different axis of play could throw someone else off theirs. If they are expecting balls to the walls combo, and they get paired against something like Stun/Burn/Floo chances are they aren't going to have a good time. If you're looking for something that interacts more with lower to the ground combo, check out Runick or Sky Striker. They don't necessarily play huge combo lines, but more look more to out resource grind your opponents.

I don’t think yugioh has any unique barriers to entry for a TCG. The problem is TCG’s themselves. Conceptually, they’re a children’s hobby that are supposed to make money off of selling booster packs for kids trying to find cards they want. But for adults, you just buy single cards to build whatever deck you want. And given the market, TCG’s are always basically forced to constantly introduce new mechanics and ban old cards to a) keep giving people a reason to buy them, and b) keep the game interesting enough to play instead of just ending up with everyone everywhere always playing the same couple of decks for all time. The fact is, it was never meant to be a hobby for adults who take it extremely seriously. Especially Yugioh and Pokémon, were based on a manga for children and a video game for children. All the problems with TCG’s can ultimately be reduced to this fact.

I got curious the other day and started to look up Snake-Eyes combos to see how many times the deck Special Summons since I'm also a big advocate for Maxx C at 3 in the TCG. As it turns out the typical Fire King Snake-Eyes combo conducts around 14 Special Summons in one turn if the opponent doesn't have any form of interruption. With one Snake-Eyes Ash. jesus christ This kind of stuff just makes those "draw the out" cards way more saccy than most people think they are since you either draw the out or push through the opponent's board with your own 1 card combos. It's just a bad back and forth we've had for a while.

Maxx c forces the smalls brains to make hard decisions like not spamming. I think it should be at 3 too. And all thes monster with negations and handtrap negates should be banned. Give everything a hard once per turn as a master rule and you have just fixed a major problem with yugioh. From there you have to limit extra deck cards (ban some also) , and what you will be left with is a card pool that punishes anyone from over extending. Then we can put the solemns back to one and over powerful blow out cards cane be put back in check... Also we have to address the flooding of archtypes, the prevent players from actually buidling decks as it constraints them to think the only way they can play a deck is if they all have the same name essientially.

Combining spell cards with monster cards to increase their strength, using field spells that just enhance certain monsters and/or weaken others and don't create gimmicks. Today's yugioh is only about one thing chaining monster effects to clear board and using spell cards to search for these monsters and/or special summoning them straight to the field from the DECK or hand or summoning a monster who can negate cards to prevent opponent from actually defending from a 1 turn kill.

What changed and ruined yugioh is 1: monsters with negation effects and the influx of to many negate cards. Everyone hates floodgates for solemn judgement to be a 1 and then be printed on actual monster was always going to be a problem. 2. Hand traps because they are essentially solemn judgement from hand espically in the case of ash blossom. 3. Finally the over reliance on archtype. Because they are pre making decks they have to add a consistency and draw base with a negate and ss monsters to make it fast...well if you take that blueprint and keep hitting copy you get to thw point where its over saturated to many archytypes and to many negates... 4. @TheAverageGatsby okay... here is an opinion. The early game that you down and say is abjectly bad and that anyone who disagrees with you is wrong... I disagree with. I really enjoyed the the slower gameplay. Back in 2003/2004 I really felt like each individual card I played mattered. Now it's just combo extension card number 12. The cards don't feel like they have personality and by extension, neither do the decks. I'm not downing current yugioh as a game and I agree that old School yugioh is a different game, but to call it or it's players bad is baseless. It's like this attitude I've heard from Modern players that old yugioh players only play bad cards. Like players are dumb for not having imperm and ash blossem in decks in 2005. Where as if there was more respect given to the original version of the game and older players maybe the current game wouldn't be a boring one turn combo fest. You don't draw a hand trap and you lose. Then internet idiots have been trained to think, Oh I'm bad at the game cause I didn't "draw the out." As if "Drawing the out" was skill based. Want another opinion about current vs old gameplay? Let's talk floodgates. You got Player A over here with a floodgate. A single card that limits a single aspect of the game. Player B puts up opening turn boards with 12 Negates to instantly stop every play the opponent makes. Which do you want to play with? Give me a floodgate over every card I play being negated any day. Yugioh in modern is played as a zero plus game. Which means I have fun and you don't. That's a HORRIBLE idea behind a game. Combined with outlandish priced cards that power scale their predecessors out of existence... and I will take Goat Format everytime.

@TheAverageGatsby 4 ай бұрын
@@brianmead1983 I don't like responding to manifestos, but in fairness I did ask for your opinion, so here is mine. Yugi/Kaiba format is "subjectively bad". The format consists of 2 structure decks and the LOB booster set. This means 90% of your games are waiting to see who managed to draw Raigeki/Dark hole. While I don't particularly care for GOAT format (2nd most popular retro format right behind Edison), it is SIGNIFICANTLY better than Yugi/Kaiba, and there isn't really any other "retro" format between those two. You are correct, and I would go further to say Post-2011, individual cards do not have as much personality as previously. The focus was put on the Decks having personality, with the cards being a means to get to the desired game state of the deck. The most iconic cards of any given deck are usually just a core combo piece (modern example Poplar), or something that you would use to end your turn (Baronne) or go for game (Accesscode). Players from the pre-2010 era were not as good as modern players are now, this is less of an opinion. Look at how far Edison has changed with a better understanding of the game. If you spend 10 years doing something, you're probably going to learn a lot after doing it for another 10. If you don't believe me go read old tournament reports. It's not about players not running new cards, it's about players not knowing what they had access to given the privilege of hindsight. If you're a floodgate enjoyer go play Floo. Right now the game is seeing an influx in floodgate players because it's one of the best options against the tier 0 Snake-Eyes deck. I'm not a fan of Floodgate strategies, but there are people who still want Mystic Mine off the list, so what do I know. In terms of Negate turbo, those types of decks are not as viable as people who don't play the game think they are due to accessibility of handtrap and going second options. Cards like Dark Ruler No More punish people playing that kind of gameplan into the ground. This is not even mentioning the fact that the current tier 0 deck in the format doesn't play excessive negates (outside of Apollousa), opting instead for a nasty combo grind that can find lethal a critical mass of starters and extenders. Lastly, in terms of price, yeah it's expensive. The rarity collection was easily the greatest product ever printed, but then they print S:P Little Knight at secret rare and it is almost required to play the game. I wish they did multiple rarity printing like the OCG. If you aren't playing Snake-Eyes the game is relatively affordable though, and each of the decks listed at 08:24 are solid budget options for people looking to get into the game. I'm still working on the first draft for my next video on how to approach the modern game, but it's not as impossible as people want you to believe. Either way, I'm a huge retro format shill so go play GOAT. I will always tell people to go play Edison because I'm a 5D's/Synchro simp.

Cards that are designed to support your field are garbage, because of way overpowered meta crap that are designed to give you an overwhelming advantage at any time. This ain’t your granddaddy’s yugioh? This is a parody of yugioh. That’s the whole problem. It barely even resembles the original game. It didn’t evolve, it was thrown out for an entirely different game. Skills in duel links were badly handled and fell pray to power creep as badly as the cards, but as a concept they are far superior than board changing garbage like pendulum and link cards.
