@@TheAverageGatsby I mean, I came into Yugioh from Smash Bros, so I'm used to and unironically enjoy this sort of hyper-competitive environment. I will say though that for most people looking to get into this game: its a lot easier to enjoy Yugioh in a casual environment between friends where there isn't as much pressure to include certain cards in your deck. If you can justify playing cards like Exchange, you're probably in a good friend group lol. Though obviously a lot of that stuff is subjective, different friend groups will have different thoughts an opinions on whats considered "fun." And honestly, I find it cool that this game can facilitate so many different casual environments.

@four-en-tee Some of the most fun I've had with recent YGO has been from my locals in their Heart of the Underdog format. The bans aren't super restrictive, but they allow some wacky fringe decks to be an option, which is always fun. I'd say 90% of my entertainment is through playing IRL. Finding a good LGS is a huge component that not enough people praise.

I do think it’s a cool development how Konami is tending more towards cards being able to fill multiple roles in a deck simultaneously. Something like Boom Mach acting as a generic HT and breaker in certain contexts, while also being a key recurrable extender. Or how something like Metaltronios can act as a breaker/interruption but can also be a starter/extender depending on the context. Runick as well is an interesting case of the lines between starter, non-engine and extender being blurred (starter for the Runick resource loop, extender paired with your other deck-half, and modular ‘non-engine’-like effects). It’s not to say the Engine:Non-Engine paradigm isn’t immensely useful, though, it is and will continue to be. I think it just comes back to what you said about seeing what each card brings to a deck first instead of trying to distill something into a formula. Great video :)))
@TheAverageGatsby
@TheAverageGatsby 3 ай бұрын
100% correct. Things like the Runick Engine are interesting. It's one of the few strategies where each piece of engine also works as non-engine. Much of what's discussed in this video is to be applied to more linear strategies for learning sake. It would take a very special case for me to use Runick as a deck for a new player.

My journey to yugioh is weird not because I couldnt get into the game, but because I got into it very easily. I think playing Master Duel helped a lot too, and I just love zany games like Yugioh I saw someone on twitter compare Modern YGO to Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and I can do see it- i feel like both are super crazy and have so many long interactions and chains that are broken but still so fun to try and play around this is a good video bc i want to def get others into the game too, and i realize i cant have everyone get into the game the same way i did! good job and keep up the good work!

Man, if there was a specific fighting game I would point to, UMVC3 is a pretty good one. Figuring out which assists work best to support whatever degenerate corner combo is very similar to YGO deck building and combo.
@dudono1744

Side note : Handtraps can be used as combo pieces in some cases. For example, some Kashtira players used their normal summon on Ash to access Baronne. (I also tend to normal a ghost girl to make arc light in drytrons). For ED slots, if the archetype you're playing doesn't have much stuff to put in it, first filter what you have access to. That both means in terms of accessibility (i.e. can you often get the needed materials) and in terms of locks (You can't use a DARK monster like Borreload Savage Dragon in speedroids). Then, when you have the list of what you can play, start looking at what the cards do.

The fact that Konami doesn't have a "Intro to X" deck for each Extra Deck mechanic is a tragedy. It's like a fighting game not teaching you how special moves work, then expecting you to recreate Evo Moment 37.
@TheAverageGatsby
@TheAverageGatsby 3 ай бұрын
I mean, if I was tasked with suggesting a deck for each mechanic, it would probably be like Fusion : Branded Synchro : Tenyi SS (or speedroid try speedroid) XYZ : Sharks or goblins Pendulum : Don't, but if you have to, then maybe like valmonica because it's recent? Link : marinecess/salad I was having the same issue when I was initially writing the script where I wanted to go over the extra deck stuff but got to the point where I realized I was almost writing out an entire 2nd video worth of descriptions.

@@TheAverageGatsby TL;DR Konami should do this themselves. The problem isn't that there aren't good decks/archetypes for doing this, it's that Konami isn't making and advertising the products themselves. You need to show new players what the fun looks like, not just hand them a rulebook and then say "figure it out." Relating back to fighting games, you can see an evolution of teaching. You went from basic controls to some special moves listed on the arcade cabnet to training modes to target combo proactive to basic auto-combos being included in games. It's not that you can't learn the information, but rather that new players don't even know what a basic combo looks like. Teaching a basic Yugioh combo is like teaching someone a basic block string. It's not just how to do it, but also that the concept exists and it's a major part of the game.
@TheAverageGatsby
@TheAverageGatsby 3 ай бұрын
 @randommaster06 You asked for examples of decks made as an intro to an extra deck mechanic, and with the exception of the Pendulum, I gave you a list of decent options. If you want structure products that have combos on the packaging, I would revise my answer to the following: Branded/Cydra for Fusion Summoning RDA structure for Synchro summoning Traptrix for XYZ summoning Salad for link and get bent for Pendulum. Your next goal post can be that it's not glamorous enough to print combos on structure deck inserts. However, I'd say that new players should do the same thing we tell the existing players to do every day and read. This completely ignores content creators who make "how to" content, but that isn't Konami. However, I do agree that if the game wanted more players, I'd like to see more structures of strategies that, despite being a 2-3 years old with reprints, are still at a playable level.

As much as I have a love/hate relationship for the game, yugioh is powercrept. I can see why people stray away from it
@TheAverageGatsby
@TheAverageGatsby 3 ай бұрын
I feel like that's how a lot of people see it. While it's undeniable just about any card game has power creep, yugioh has a weird problem where the type of power creep introduced in a format makes it less desirable, even for players who enjoy the game. If the snake eyes deck wasn't blessed with 4+ custom cards over the course of a few months, I'd be genuinely enjoying the current format. Instead, I'm trying out Star Wars Unlimited (having a great time) while I hold out for whatever lackluster banlist is behind curtain number 1.

That's not true, there are plenty of mid-tier and rogue decks that see play. I still play Trickstar from time to time despite never getting any support because it has a fun gimmick and that deck is mid-tier. And now I play Vaalmonica quite frequently because there's finally a Pendulum deck that has a gimmick and design I really like.

YGO is like a Fighting game? Nice 1st April Joke bro. Something missing from YGO but Fighting games have, the dev is more careful with balancing. I some fighting games before Master Duel was released. And I don't think this game is close. . For me, YGO is like a racing game, but with different vehicles. Yes, you can be a good driver. Because it never changes the fact that your scooter is slower than a sports car. And every vehicle is racing on the same straight line, the faster vehicle will get the advantages more. And a little different with racing. In racing, at least you can enjoy the road. But in YGO, it is like racing, but every time you leave behind. The vehicle in front of you will drop a bomb and destroy your beloved vehicle. This is the main reason why people can stay in this game. It is not because they are not good at the game. They know how to play the game, but they also know they cannot play their favorite deck and are forced to play against those unfair decks in the same format. They know it is wasting their time to learn about the game when in the end you can only play with limited options. And if they are crazy enough to play with their favorite deck, their opponent will make sure to make them not play the game. . But we can compare YGO with Fighting Game, if someday, Konami is somehow interested in creating a balanced format. If we really want to compare current YGO with Fighting. It is like when the P1 plays their character, but the P2 cannot touch their controller before the P1 burns all their energy.
@renaldyhaen
@renaldyhaen 3 ай бұрын
@RenNael666 I know that, and I never said the fighting is always fair. I just said they're more careful with the balance. At least the dev is more careful with the balance. Because they know, that if a character is too easy but broken, this will make their game boring. If char A is too broken on release, they will fix that immediately. In YGO, they aren't really brave enough to hit the problematic cards directly. But even with Top-tier or low-tier characters, in Fighting, the players still have important parts that make the character good. We talking about micro skills like reflexes or quick thinking. A good player can play with bad characters better because they have better reflexes than ordinary players. These things cannot be translated to YGO, you can ask time for thinking to your opponent here. But in a Real-time fight, you late making a decision for a mili-sec, and your opponent will take advantage. . Most importantly, you can create a character that is very good but difficult to use. But in the current YGO, I cannot see that now. The good decks now are too easy because they have no meaningful restrictions and everything is generic. You can say copying a combo from YTber is difficult. But after playing the same line for maybe 5 times or more, I think it is enough to understand the deck, knowing the decks now have no limitation. In harsher words, you can still make an intimidating endboard with META decks and click "Yes" turbo in anything that glows on your Master Duel screen. Even any action game characters always have limitations.

Video would be better without the first few minutes of shilling fighting games. Also 500th video essay that compares card games to fighting games, comparing things to fighting games is just the continuation of comparing everything to dark souls from years ago. Both silly and beating the word to death until it has no meaning.

Don't particularly care about the fighting game "shilling", as you put it, but as someone who plays online sims of YGO and is also a complete scrub in fighting games, idk what you're on about on your second point. Not only is YGO the only card game to be compared to fighting games, comparing YGO to fighting games is not like comparing childbirth to Dark Souls. Hell, this very video essay isn't the only video out there where people compare YGO to fighting games, I've seen others out there do the same thing.

I don't particularly see where "shilling" comes in but it's clear you're dismissive without putting any thought about the comparison. And this video only really scratched the surface level by saying you can't get results without putting in time and properly learning deck (similar to how learning character goes in fighters). I would go step further and show one thing that is prevalent in fighting games but not talked a lot in tcg (esp. yugioh). Large part of getting good in competitive fighters is "reading" you opponent. And that's something lot of yugioh players forget, they are playing someone else not just playing solitaire turn 1 or solving a puzzle turn 2. Too many people too often have quite narrow understanding of both their deck and certain match ups so they make too many assumptions and ignore what's actually happening on the board. And lot of (bad) players are really bad at managing resources and responding to actual plays happening instead of some predetermined plays that decks are capable of. So as result they either give up or celebrate too soon and get angry when things don't go their way.
Yugioh is getting very FRUSTRATING...
