I am a physician.. DVT and PE (deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism) is not actually rare. Immobility, whether it is from surgery or long sitting in travel (cars or planes) is one of the principal causes. Risk increases with age but wearing compression stockings and doing ankle pumps can definitely help. I happen to now be an almost 67-year-old physician and the risks of thrombosis will not keep me from flying. Contracting a respiratory illness on a plane is much more likely but I have had good effect from wearing a mask and that is worth the effort for me on a flight.

Thanks for mentioning the risk of DVTs. I came down with a severe DVT a week after a transcontinental flight. I was and still am pretty active so this was a huge surprise. Ill be on blood thinners for the rest of my life. Of note, the long flight and subsequent damage to my veins is believed to be the trigger, but doctors still have not IDed an underlying condition. Its something of a miracle this incident didnt kill me. I still fly a few times a year and pay extra attention to mitigate the risk. If you are susceptible to DVT or have other cardiovascular, blood, venous, or even autoimmune issues, you can mitigate some risk by taking aspirin before and after the flight (its a mild blood thinner - please talk to your doctor first), wearing compression stockings, staying hydrated, and stretching/stand up and move around every couple of hours. On that same fateful flight, I remember sleeping for nearly 18 hours straight when I got home. Oof.

Hello, RN here! Loved the video. Very glad to hear the DVT part in this video. Pooling of the blood in the lower limbs poses a bigger risk as we get older. Compression socks on a daily basis, as well as on a flight, are super important. We young people don't even realize the importance of consistent blood flow until we develop spider veins, varicose veins, or poor blood circulation in our lower limbs. It won't stop me from traveling, but compression socks are a must in my travel bag and work wardrobe.

Spider veins and varicose veins are also hereditary. You can decrease or delay, but those of us whose parents have this won’t escape unless we walk on our hands and sit on our heads.

As physicist, I can confirm that ultraviolet light is more intense at 5-8 miles altitude typical of long haul airtravel, however your exposure to it is less than on the ground for a simple reason: the body of an airplane is totally blocking it from your skin and eyes unless you travel in a a open cockpit biplane. Aluminum and exterior fuselage paint blocks ultraviolet rays even though the fuselage is only a millimeter thick.

I used to get migraines every time I flew, really putting a damper on the first days of my trip, until I started taking a cold/flu tablet about an hour prior to takeoff. Took care of that little problem. I also bring along GasX tablets for the bloating/gassy issues.

Definitely experienced the bloating on my most recent flight, and was quite uncomfortable. The expanded air also takes days not just hours to work it's way through your system (similar to after having surgery on your abdomen), so it was a couple weeks before I felt like myself again. I'd never had it on any flight before and the difference that stands out is that this time I boarded on an empty stomach. Empty stomach = more air to expand. Won't do that again.

In 2016 one of a few times going to Vegas i don't know weather it was jetlag or exhaustion we went to our hotel we booked for a week (Trump hotel) but left for the night due to hotel scare another story. Went to veniten hotel I was awake for 2 days I took medication run a hot bath this was about 11.30pm fell asleep awoke in time as my mouth was under water I was so tired. I got straight out went to bed and slept threw checkout so I'm unsure weather it was jetlag or exhaustion but had a great sleep and felt good after for rest of trip. Great information there Megan. On flights at or longer than 2 hours I normally will get up and walk a few laps in the aisles if the flight attendants aren’t serving passengers. I normally do it once every few hours. One flight attendant I follow on KZbin adds some sunscreen to her makeup routine. Thank you for your advice videos. One of the gems on KZbin.

I think this is one of the best videos you have made. On a topic that is SO important and SO overlooked. Always consult your doctor if you are scheduled to fly regarding how it might affect your existing health problems and how to prevent any complications. Do also consult or inform your doctor if you have had/ or are going to have any procedure or surgery before a scheduled air travel. As an ophthalmologist I can tell you that if you have a vitrectomy surgery with injection of an SF6 or C3F8 gas bubble into your eye (ignore the fancy technical names 😄), you cannot fly until the gas bubble is fully absorbed. Otherwise the pressure changes during the flight may cause the bubble to expand and suddenly increase the pressure in your eye.

As the saying goes "You are a breath of fresh air " You are enjoyable to watch and to listen too ! Those 9 facts are quite interesting and two are most prevalent for me. I do get constipation after a long flight (very annoying of course) I do seem to be prone to infections. Last may I travelled with a minor sore throat and ended up with pneumonia that lasted the entire trip from Liverpool to London getting some NHS medication, but it did not help much and when I got home I had to go to hospital and finally after a month I was better. Luckily I do not get jet lag, but I did the very first trip to the UK and it is true what they say -Try not to sleep when you arrive and be active -easier said then done I know, but it does work !

I worked night shift for 11 years, most of them raising children. I can’t sleep the afternoon before shift so I would go 24 hours without sleep. When I had the next night off, I come home and sleep as usual get up, stay up until 10-11:30 pm and sleep the night through. You have to make up for lost sleep, learned that from a doctor at Stanford that researched it. All flights I’ve taken to Europe from east coast US arrive in the morning. Told my significant other I need to sleep on arrival, get up for dinner and whatever and go to bed 11ish. He finally let me do this and it was a great trip. He was shocked when he came in during the afternoon to work that I didn’t wake up at all. I took my b4 sleep benadryl and skipped the 6 mg melatonin I usually take.

@@lisaphares2286 Nice to hear. Whatever works for you is good. I did read about these long trips and the time zone change was to not sleep when you arrive even though the urge to do that is strong. I found that when I arrive from a flight that starts in the evening and arrives in the morning is to stay as active as possible and sleep at your usual time. I chose not to waste an entire day like that. It works for me but maybe not everyone, so the choice is up to you.

I’ve done a lot of flying, mostly for vacations and adventure travel, and I’m going to be minimizing it in the future. Upon landing in Europe, I almost always had contracted an upper respiratory infection, always miserable, but once dangerous (it led to pneumonia.) I have severe chronic dry eye, and those very dry aircraft interiors can give me massive headaches. Since the pandemic started and my air travel got sharply curtailed, I have hardly ever gotten a respiratory infection. Wearing a mask a lot in public surely helped too. Travel by plane has resulted in so many of my medical issues - I’m glad I did it, but I’m basically done.

Overall, flying seems like one of the safer activities to me. On one of my most recent flights, there was a sudden altitude drop at a time when no turbulence had been expected; several people who were walking around were injured, a flight attendant most seriously. My strategy is to get a window seat and to stay buckled in my seat unless the flight is longer than six hours or so. I use the airport bathrooms just before and immediately after the flight. Lots of ankle pumps, and stretching in my seat. Plenty of water, saline spray for my nose, and sometimes a mask. So far--maybe with luck--no respiratory infections. I guess we all have our ways to handle risks.

While I can't speak for everyone and each person is different, I pretty much consider these things to be rather minimal, but then again I only fly maybe once a month so I'm not like some people who fly every week (although I'm also thinking those people may be more used to the experience -- physically -- than someone who doesn't fly that frequently). One thing I've found for jet lag is if you can, try to adjust your sleep schedule perhaps a week ahead or at least a few days ahead of your trip. Sometimes this isn't feasible especailly if where you're going is say 8 hours ahead or behind, as this may impact your work schedule, but if it's perhaps 2-4 hours you might be able to do this. Say you're flying from CA to NY, you could start going to sleep a few hours earlier each night and getting up earlier (say getting up at 4am instead of 7am or 8am like you would normally). I have found this can help reduce the effects of jet lag. Of course coming back may be more difficult but I try to leave at least a 2 day buffer on both ends of my trips if I'm traveling to places where jet lag may become a problem (usually when the time difference is more than 4 hours for me). I learned this stuff the hard way going to Europe a long time ago, and since the places I was (Switzerland) was about 7 hours ahead of my home time zone, I remember falling asleep around 2pm (their time) as that was about 7am at home, but I had been up about 8 hours already (so it's like I never went to sleep the night before). Oddly, going from Chicago to say CA or Nevada (which is 2 hours behind, is more taxing on me, than flying back home. Part of tht I think is the mentality that you board a plane at say 6pm Chicago time, fly for 4 hours, but in Las Vegas or CA, it's only 8pm and so you tell yourself it's not that late, when in fact it's more like "10pm" to your body. Flying home though is not as as bad for me to adjust to as it is fly to a place that is 2+ hours behind. Moving forward, I usually handle that better (except for some more extreme cases like when time difference is say more than 3-4 hours ahead).

These do not prevent me from flying and I'm always on the lookout about how to travel safely, and comfortably. When I fly it's usually a Transatlantic flight. The more I travel the less time it appears to take and I've flown everything from crunched in way back in Coach, to lie flat Business Class seats. No matter which cabin, aisle or window (window preferred), I wear some light compression socks. Moisturizer, hand cream and sunglasses I use in flight as well. Just have to work in the hydration part. Really good information here in your videos☆☆

I handle the possibility of constipation when beginning a new overseas trip by carrying a bag of bran flake cereal in my checked bag and having a large serving the first 4 or 5 nights. It helps the adjustment process and saves the effort of looking for a similar product in local grocery stores (sometimes available but expensive if imported, as in Asia).

I watched a video on TV about the airlines kitchen in Frankfurt many years ago. About food we are served at 35,000 feet: our taste buds stop working and every kind of food we eat is “bland” for our mouths. To remediate this situation, all food prepared for high-altitude eating is over-salted and over-spiced.

I've been having one 10+ hours of transcontinental flights for on average every 3month(or less) for the last 5+ years. For the recent last two years, I've been having at least 2 10+ hours transcontinental flights every 3 month (not even counting the 3-4 hour flights). I'm checking this video because, and I highly suspect that I have developed an autoimmune disease, because it's incredibly easy for me to feel tired (everyone thinks I'm extremely lazy) and get flus (I was 27-28 degree 2 weeks when I got covid19 the first time, even though I've had the vaccine beforehand). Also, I have been switching between all kinds of antibiotic topicals + pills for about a year and a half now to control red eczema looking checks that I am suspecting it to be lupus because they are on my checks and quite symmetrical when severe. Oh, and I've had severe eating disorder during college (a professor called the polis to force me to hospital to check if I have gotten anorexia) , so my immune system was already weakened to begin with. I visited a dermatologist some months ago in Turkiye, and he expressed concerns and wanted to book me for blood test (which I rejected and said I'll be flying away soon). Since then, every time I land somewhere, I look for online doctors to get prescription antibiotic(occasionally light steroid) topicals and pills. I'm only 26, not prepared for anything bad. I just finished watching this, and I'm very scared.😭😭😭....I'm also rethinking about why my veins are so obvious on my calfs, since I stopped wearing tights ever since I started combating that eating disorder I mentioned.😭😭😭

NONE of these scared me honestly, I've only had 2 flights in my entire life but these effects are all temporary, and deep thrombosis isn't something you could develop from one single flight. And the same with skin cancer from UV exposure. Unless you have medical conditions that inhibit your blood flow, you don't need to worry about that, just shake your legs if you feel uncomfortable. I do need to admit though, it kinda sucks having swollen feet after a flight. I always need a massage and always wish there was a massage chair in airplanes. "weakening immune system" is kind of an exaggeration but jet lags and stress and anxiety can def make your immune system to go whack for awhile. BUT i will continue taking flights too, the excitement is far greater than negatives!

The more immaculate -- it seems--- the confines of aircraft are to the one keen on finding out more, the greater the contaminants there are to worry about discovering: seats are never shipshape -- considering what maintains constant contact with it all always---throughout its life, cabin interiors never qualifies as up to par--- given exhausted breath fellow passengers must inhale -- as their own life giving breath ---not least having to deal with attitudinizing co- travelers almost questioning absence of your gratitude for the privileges of sitting near you. Aviation is fraught with all sorts of worriments, one needs only hope for an uneventful flight---

While I found these interesting, none will keep me from flying! I will prepare better for overseas travel as far as getting sick. Having a bad cold was no fun but I didn’t let it stop me!

I flew over 2 months ago and my ears are still plugged and still have ringing in my ears. I am not flying anymore. I will be taking the train for my traveling now.

None of what was mentioned will put me off flying. Because of some leg/feet swelling on a previous trip, I have taken up wearing compression socks. They help.

Great video as usual! However, I wonder if UV radiation is only a problem for pilots who sit in the sun coming through the cockpit windows. It would seem to me that cabin crew and passengers would be protected from UV radiation since direct sunlight is rarely an issue in the cabin. High energy cosmic rays? Well, that is probably an issue for “all souls on board.” But I don’t plan to let that prevent me from flying. As for illness from being confined for hours with lots of other people, I always wear a mask when not eating (even now after the pandemic) to try to mitigate that risk. I also wear compression socks and regularly flex my legs to try to prevent deep vein thrombosis.

I have no sense of smell (born like this) and because of that I have a limited sense of taste. I like airplane food. I guess it is because it tastes the same to me as food at low altitudes. I used to it.

Cosmic radiation can be defeated by making yourself a hat from aluminum foil. I don't believe I've ever gotten sunburned inside an airplane, but the hat likely will help there too. Recirculated air is a non-issue as airliners replace the cabin air every few minutes.

Hi Megan, I don’t travel that much but since I live in hawaii traveling anywhere requires a long airplane trip. I’m more worried about the deep vein Thrombosis cause I have peripheral artery disease. But it’s well controlled and I move around a lot on the plane which is also a risk due to Turbulence. I guess you can’t win😊 IAloha
