As a retired social worker I have to pay tribute to all the foster carers out there. They do a very demanding job which is 24/7. They change the lives of hurt and vulnerable children and they oftentimes don't get the recognition they deserve ❤❤

Once the adoption or permanent residence is approved and the paperwork is completed, are there follow up worker visits or supports that happen to ensure that things remain good going forward? My good friend growing up was adopted, and I don't recall her ever mentioning a worker visit when we were young. But I wonder if things would be different if there was, as her adoptive dad started abusing her when she hit puberty. They wouldn't permit her to close her bedroom door, bathroom door, etc.. She developed an eating disorder, starting cutting, became promiscuous, and her adoptive mom just turned a blind eye and bossed her around. It wasn't until she came over to my place one day when she was 16 and told me about the abuse that my parents called the police and she was removed from their home. Back then, nobody did anything if it was "somebody else's business", not even the school counselor.

My understanding is that once the adoption happens, all the caseworker visits and any cps interference stops. Adoption is basically treated the same as if they are your biological child, so no one is checking in. It makes me sick how many stories like this I've heard.😞

What was already stated is fact the case.. most the time. Once the judge grants the motion for adoption the child is legally the child of said parents. Everyone involved goes away. Now there are parents who are invested in the child and their wellbeing to the point that the parents may keep caseworkers,ect. Updated or in the loop. Two months ago we finalized our adoption. We still interact with the courtesy worker and the adoption specialist. Not before we have to, but before these people were such an important part of our kiddos life it would do more harm than good to just cut them out.

I really hope she went to therapy and was able to overcome. My husband and I were foster parents 50 years ago, and the things children deal with are terrible, and then think you are saved from that life to be put in a home with these sick people is absolutely disgusting. Being female I can only imagine the embrassment she felt with no doors and them watching her in her most personal moments. My heart hurts for her.

Yes, but only at 3 months, 6 months, one year, and two years. After that the check up visits stopped. I was in a similar situation to your friend where the abuse only started once I stopped being "cute," so I get it. Not every state requires that the child be present at the visit either, and the guidelines for what makes a successful visit are more geared towards physical safety and well-being than emotional observations. Removing all the doors in your house wouldn't get you reported to CPS, no matter how creepy it is to watch your teenaged daughter pee * it's different in different states. I was adopted in South Carolina and my bio mom had visitation rights so the case worker visits continued for a while. But there's no period of time where a birth mom gets to reverse giving her kid up to the system in my home state like other places have, you just give up your kid and that's it. So the guidelines for home visits in SC are woefully lax

I have a question … Does the child choose if he/she wants to move with those parents ? For example if the child does not feel safe or happy with those parents, can the child say no or does he have to go with those parents ?

The child gets no say in whether or not they're adopted if they're under the age of 16. At the age of 16 you can file for emancipation in the United States and annul a previous adoption or refuse a current one, but that also means you forfeit your entitled benefits of being in the system. (Most of the time, unless you live in California)

@@slithra227 This isn't true. In many states, children 12-14 have to consent to the adoption. I was on the waiting child list for my county and my worker would let me know about people inquiring and I told her to tell them to f**k off. I couldn't remove myself from the list - I was legally available for adoption - but I didn't have to be adopted.

Permanent placement in kinship means that the kid is fast tracked int your house due to biological ties. Adoption is optional in kinship situations but is advantageous for taxes and such. However if you don't adopt, then the kid will be entitled to other benefits from the foster care system to help support them into reaching adulthood. The decision to adopt or not for kinship is usually financial

Or in many cases, adoption just NEVER happens for whatever reason and the kid gets ruined by the system because the system keeps pushing reunification with a parent who is incapable of taking care of them.
