I concur with Hickok45 on NOT using steel cased ammo in my handguns. Not as pliable as brass and can chip the extractor, which may result in less than totally reliable extraction from the chamber in a Semi-auto. The same applies to aluminum cased ammo.

After 35+ years, I fully trust Federal / American Eagle and PMC to be the best in quality and consistency. These days, with so many other manufacturers and ownerships changing, the one thing I do is inspect all rounds for having the same seating depth. I have found 5.56 and 9mm rounds where some bullets in a box were seated far too deep.

Same here gold dot, a month ago I was trying some 9mm gold dot through my M&P response at the 100 yard range, I couldn't hear it but the dnr came over and asked what ammo i was using he said it had a cool whistle lol

judged by what? bs from youtubers? have you shot dozens of animals with ccw guns and loads to find out the FACTS? I have and believe me, you do NOT want heavy for caliber jhps, cause they will NOT expand in lung tissue and probably not in any other tissue. What they do in jello is irrelevant.

Carry ammo - 9mm 124 gr Gold Dots (1150 fps) Practice ammo - 124 gr Fiocchi JHP (1150 fps)
@DonTruman11 күн бұрын
Semi-newbie here, honest question: why do you prefer 124 gr? I've noticed 115 gr is much more common and cheaper.

The only FMJA ammo point that I view is very important is with ported guns. You want a bonded full metal jacket and not plated full metal jacket. When Plated FMJ passes the barrel ports, LOTS of material sloughs off and even melts temporarily from the friction. That material is ejected up through the ports and out the muzzle. The BAD part, is that material is not 100% ejected and will build up in the rifling of your barrel, eventually causing significant accuracy issues

Brazer aluminum is not that great, it doesn't cycle well in some guns, but Blazer brass works just fine for plinking and targets that don't shoot back. I miss the cheap Russian ammo for rifle practice. Import ban might change after Jan 20.

I agree with shooting the same weight in carry and practice ammo. I wonder why 45acp target ammo only comes in 230g and not like also 185g?
@EsyuDach12 күн бұрын
you clearly dont know that Midrange target .45 swc's have always been 185 gr, but you can't trust them to feed reliably. They are wussy-loaded to 750 fps. There's no .45 jhp worth a hoot since corbon dropped out of biz and their 165 gr, 1250 fps load was their only worthwhile offering. The 165 gr Hornady stuff is wussyloaded. it's not hard to pull the bullets out of 165 gr factory ammo, expand the case mouth a bit, add a REAL powder charge and reseat the 165 gr jhp, going 200 fps faster and taper crimp it. Nobodys ever going to know as long as you use the same powder that came in the case. (but more of it) If you want to seal the case mouth vs moisture and oil, use clear model airplane 'dope".

Agreed. Unless you are a full time competition shooter, the exact ammo won't matter much.

Is there really a big advantage for defense with fluted / fluid dynamics bullets (like Honey Badgers or Underwood Xtreme) vs. JHPs? Maybe it's more of an advantage in smaller / more marginal calibers like 380 than with heaver loads... ?

It's more important to be proficient with your gun than what you shoot out of it. The best most expensive ammo sucks if you don't hit the target. Buy cheap so you can practice, practice and practice some more. Then buy quality ammo to carry.
@morrismonet355412 күн бұрын
Except that they don't hit to same point of aim, so don't get too comfortable.

Yup and if you’re using a semi auto make sure your carry ammo reliably feeds and ejects every time not just usually… every time.

if you shot, say, a dozen smaller pigs, say 50 lbs and feral dogs with both the fastest, lightest hps and the slowest, heaviest, you'd know that what you just said has been obsolete for several years now, especially with pocket 9mm's, Get Liberty Arm's 50 gr, 2000 fps, solid copper hps, 450 ft lbs of power, MORE than 125 gr jhps in a 357 snubbie, much more reliable expansion in lung tissue, but no more recoil than in a hot 380 factory load. .18 second per repeat hit, instead of. the snubbie's .35+ second repeat hits. with ammo that costs half as much and a gun that looks like a wallet in your front pants pocket, instead of looking like a baked potato. I can tell if you're pocket carrying a j frame .38 from 10m away.
