How do you cope while on the edge of a breakdown? For me that phase is worse than the breakdown because it takes so much energy and I’m constantly worrying and have to motivate me to do stuff I have to do instead of just crawling in my bed

I hear you. I have ADHD as well and I get these awful things that I called shut downs where I can’t move or speak and they can last from 10 minutes to a few hours and they suck. Unfortunately, I am currently a teenager so I can’t just like take a day off when I feel one coming. It really sucks. Thank you so much for posting. I really love your videos.

@@user-zu5um2vo4w although that isn’t bad advice, I’m definitely not in the spectrum, but I have moments as Rylynn described because of ADHD. @Rylynn, make sure you ask for help! Do you have an IEP? A therapist? Someone with expertise that can help you? I am a special Ed teacher and I know that some teachers are useless when it comes to this kind of thing, but this should be something that you can speak in person to someone about that can help you! Hey sweetie. I'm a 50 year-old ADHD+Autism granny. I'm like you and have these horrible freezes. There's multiple things that I do for self care. Number one, I switched from coffee to Crio Bru. It's cacao that is brewed and enjoyed exactly like a cup of coffee but without the caffeine anxiety and acid nausea. Yes, it's a little expensive but because it helps me personally in multiple ways, the cost is worth it. Other things I do to help with meltdowns/shutdowns/freezes (I get the whole range. I never know which will be the one to rear its ugly head until too late) are listening to binaural music, crying, walking barefoot in my yard, sitting under a tree and leaning against it, talking to my cats and most importantly, I am lucky enough to have what I call my anchor person. He's not only my husband, he's my friend, and my emotional anchor. Having a trusted, caring person, be it friend, partner, or family member helps me feel less alone and the struggle isn't as bad as those forced to fight this alone. I also like to touch water in some way: I sometimes go stand in ankle-deep water and splish-splash. Other times I turn on warm or hot water and let it run over my hands and at the same time, I let my mind drift. Same thing with the shower. I don't have just one self-soothe. It's taken me a lifetime to learn how to cope. I'm *still* learning how to manage these things. My therapist has been a godsend. She gave me some tools like the 4-7-8 breathing method (can be used as a sleep aid too!) and "I see, I feel, I hear". Please remember that you are not alone, that you are NOT damaged goods, and that there are many ways of managing these hard days.

Hey there, thank you for your comment. I don't have ADHD or Autism women in my life who are older than me. This leads me to feeling like my behavior is juvenile and I just need to "get it together". I appreciate hearing about your anchor partner ❤️ and the things you do to cope.

It's really comforting to hear a woman older than 30 talking about these things. I'm almost thirty, and when I'm hit by, well, everything, I feel like I've failed as an adult and that maybe I look like a dysfunctional child to others. Imagining you using your coping mechanisms and talking to your therapist in the way that I try to, makes me feel like I'm not a failure, because I don't think anyone else is. You seem like a really kind person, thank you for sharing your experience. ❤❤❤

When I shut down I actually shut down. Like I sit and cannot get up to do any of the things I know I need to do. I think about the things. I mull over the things. I feel guilt about not doing the things. I tell myself to go do the things. I may even write lists to prioritise the things that I will not be doing that day. After several hours I nowadays accept that I am having what I call a "brain rest" day. I try not to heap anger or guilt onto myself. I let those around me that I'm struggling that day so they're aware. And I focus on nourishing myself and my children, and do lots of reading and documentaries. In my inactivity I am "doing" things that require no movement or organisation whatsoever. By days end I've summoned the energy and ability to do a couple things. Maybe a load of washing and a small tidy up. Then I'm done again and it's off to bed. Tomorrow is always a new day. ADHD inattentive is so invasive sometimes. I'm glad it's not every day. But I have had bouts of 4 day long brain rests, stages in life where it happens to me twice a week. These seasons are debilitating yet I can't take meds for it because I'm breastfeeding or pregnant when these extra trying times emerge.

Idk even though I'm ADHD i only got officially. diagnosed a few years ago, in mid 30s... i never differentiated between shutdowns etc.. cause i just never thought of it. But... my advice, maybe do really deep gratitude list, a forgiveness list,(things you forgive yourself for), and do some balancing exercises whether on one-foot, or on a big balance ball, or find a straight line on your floor ans walk it.back and forth, on the balls ofnyoir feet. Good focus tool. Is an ADHD shutdown a complete breaking of your ability to do any productive tasks??

I'm the same way. I hate my job but I only work 3 days a week. Yes fitting a whole work week of hours into 3 days is an endurance event and can be miserable during the times you don't like your coworkers but it's less than half the week so I get my sanity back and still some days off. TL;DR maybe a schedule change will help.

My work involves extensive cardio and heavy lifting. It can also be quite frustrating as it often involves quite a few mind games left behind by previous workers that I have to fix. Sometimes, between the aches, bleeding hands, and headache, all I want to do when I get home is crash. I've found, however, that the 'runner's high,' like feeling I get puts me in a fairly chipper mood. Sometimes, while it may seem overwhelming to exercise after such a stressful day, even something light can make all the difference. I some days refuse to push to failure in these moments, and it will actually have quite a positive effect on my mental health and overall productivity. The only disclaimer is that when you're so used to pushing to failure, not allowing yourself to may make one feel like they're being lazy for not upholding that. In these scenarios, it's best to focus on what's been done, and what's getting done, as opposed to what could've been done.

I have a story about an ADHD shutdown i had in 5th grade, I was missing an assignment I needed to do and I was really overwhelmed, and then the lunch room was really loud so I shutdown at lunch. My mind was scattered and I couldn’t move with being ordered to or having my hand held. I wasn’t supposed to go outside but my friends didn’t know that so she held my hand and walked me outside, I was just about to calm down, (I was also so stressed I couldn’t talk) until one of the 5th grade teachers came running out and grabbed me and sat me down and watched me do the work, I could barely do what I was doing and I was trying to take deep breaths they heard me and just laughed. Few years later I’m realizing I may also be autistic and have self diagnosed ADHD because I had no other choice and pretty much all the symptoms👍

When I have a “shutdown” (I say burnout instead so it’s easier for others to understand) it basically looks like I’m depressed. My body forces me to slow down and sometimes I become pretty annoying to be around because I don’t like to talk when I feel that way and I certainly don’t like to put on a “mask” for others. So, I end up just looking more unemotional than I already feel. I kind of become a recluse and just play video games and sometimes I’ll drink a bit. It’s not super healthy, but thankfully it doesn’t last too long. It used to happen way more before I started taking my meds 3 times a day so now it’s much less often and when it does happen it’s less severe and easier to cruise through the day!

If I wait too long and let the breakdown set it, I go into ADHD paralysis of some sort and shut down. Then I just end up sitting/laying around scrolling or staring into space while feeling like I should be doing something productive and then the guilt sets in and I have to pull myself out of a hole all over again. It's exhausting, but I'm getting better at it. Love seeing this type of content, thank you for this.

36 dude diagnosed at 3. We have a very very similar way of dealing with the shutdown. I end up doing a lot of standing “in-between” tasks though, that’s why I’ll go on so many walks to try and break me out of being stuck. Can’t help you on the armpit in-grown. Although I get them on my face/neck if I use a razor 🪒 🤷🏻‍♂️ haha. Oh ya! I have movies from my childhood on in the background a lot to try and make me feel… more at home? Safe? I don’t know what it is, but it helps .

For the ingrown armpit hair, I use an exfoliating glove and give it a quick scrub whenever I shower and that helps remove excees dead skin that prevents them from getting stuck

I’m in shutdown mode right now because I just got back from a fun trip with my friend group and I have work tomorrow which means I have a lot to do but I physically cannot so I’m just gonna stay in bed for the rest of the day.

AuDHD here. I have one of those sebum sucky vacuum thingies for zits and stuff. Sometimes I use that to help empty the pore of an ingrown (because the armpit is tender!). They dont cost a lot and they can also be really helpful if you have a stim where youre constantly picking blemishes. For me, an empty pore is a non-desirable stim target. While I dont get a lot of body acne, I do get a lot of skin issues, and for me a nice scented soap with hyloronic acid helps my skin not produce those issues (or acne!) to begin with, so I'm a lot less likely to pick-stim.

Maybe a gentle exfoliant? You can take a bit of your body wash or an oil and mix sugar or used coffee grounds with it (safer for water systems and the fishies than the tiny plastic beads) I used to have that issue frequently. I switched to using a cleanser that came with a deodorant/antiperspirant (i was tired of sweating through my antiperspirant every night at work) and I haven't had any since (when i use it regularly). I did also switch to using a safety razor too though (havent nicked myself once- which schocked me!) But the company for the wash stuff is called Duradry.

Armpit hair: Glycolic acid cleanser (leave on 2 arm pits for minutes) then salicylic acid promote treatment stuff. You can get a spray kind for the body. You may also want to change deodorants and razors.

I feel you. I've had one rumbling for a number of weeks... I finally boiled over into a meltdown on Monday. The strange part was Tuesday when I just got up and went to work like nothing happened. Once I got home I crashed and was basically the walking dead until just this morning. It really sucked because yesterday was my birthday and with everyone over I was in sensory overload the whole time.

Today I literally felt like doing nothing and just letting myself rot because I had no executive function. Somehow I convinced myself to shower and that really helped but it took a lot of willpower. Im convinced I deal with something but so far I’ve been told nothing.

Use a trimmer instead of a razor. You only get the "silky smooth" for a day, maybe 2, before you get regrowth, and not even that if you get razor burn or nicks. I don't shave often, but when I do, I just use an electric razor. I don't get the razor burn, nicks, or ingrown hairs, but my [body part] still LOOKS shaved.

how are you developing armpit ingrown hairs? do you use a razor blade to shave? usually an ingrown hair comes from shaving without doing enough exfoliating! 2 options that help would be to shave using an electric razor like a phillips norelco which will give a slightly less smooth shave which will prevent the hair from being trapped under a layer of dead skin thus growing in the incorrect direction, the other tip is to get a loofa and pour some body wash directly into it then squeeze and smush it around in your hand until it's VERY sudsy bubbly and then give a good 45 second swirling scrub under your armpits 1 or 2 days before shaving, then also for 1 or 2 days after. i have had to deal with a lot of ingrown hairs being trans and this advice has helped me so much!!! i hope it can help you

Use an after shave after shaving, I use extremely diluted apple cider vinegar on everywhere that I shave, I use to have HORRIBLE little red zits everywhere even after using a sanitized, new, and good quality razor. I use native brand deodorant and it has really helped as well. Moisturizing after showers is your best friend. My body skin is like my finest dream since i started using acv, I still get zits on my face but that's my pcos

To cope i lay on couch with favorite blanket and watch true crime shows and horror movies and have lots of tea wether its hot or cold.

Hahaha I will make coffee on the stove cause I got used to that in PR and it tastes so yummy. Okay. Sorry. Squirreled it for a sec. When I use the keurig I will literally walk by it hours later and see my coffee chillin right there cold as can be! Haha and I have been known to leave it on my table and wake up and drink it! Jaja and my bed is covered in journals and pretty colored pen and highlighters and vapes and laptop hahaha and maybe some snacks. 😂😂😂 so accurate for me why I hyper focus. But my shut downs won’t allow me out of bed. Or they will make me rearrange the entire room! Smh no middle area. All or nothing it seems.

Slap some witch hazel on your ingrowns! It'll help with the irritation! Id also recommend looking into a trimmer, i got my trans girlfriend the meridian trimmer bc she has really dense hair growth and gets terrible razor burn. It can be used in the shower or dry and can get pretty close to the skin (:
