What are Architectural Drawing Conventions? First Year Architecture Lecture

This First Year Architecture lecture was recorded on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja for students of Curtin University's Architecture School. This lecture series is part of my unit Visual Literacy, where we learn the visual language of architecture, and how to express our ideas to others.

An epic series! In this video it's great that all drawings are still schematic but even then there are lots of examples on how to represent different things by simple tweaks to line type, weight and opacity. A good foundation to later learn construction drawings, and read wall/floor/roof compositions and junction details :)

Sorry if I’m asking to questions but I was kind of curious why their is a cut from A-A and a cut from b-b. Why would you need a cut that’s going through an architectural floor plan?

I teach the architectural design program at a local high school here in Pearl City, Hawaii. Your videos have been extremely helpful in breaking things down! Random question, do you think it's better to focus/develop students with Revit or Sketchup at the high school level?

Glad you like them. The way I structured our course is Sketchup first to give students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals and play with 3D forms, Rhino second to explore boundless creativity, and Revit third to tie in with their gained knowledge of construction techniques, materials and legislation. To answer your question, Sketchup would give students more freedom to explore, and could lead to many different pathways, whereas Revit is really a tool for documenting how something must be built. Of course you can be creative in Revit too, but I argue that at a high school level, it will be easier to be creative in Sketchup. Ultimately, it’s up to the students, you, and the intention of the curriculum.

what do you use to make the sketches you use on your slides?

AutoCAD first and then I clean them up in Adobe Illustrator so that lineweights are appropriate for the screen presentation.

what is the diffirence between internal and external doors?

Generally speaking - width, you usually have a wider external door to allow furniture and appliances to get in; and the thickness/solidness of the door leaf. Many practices will draw internal doors without a leaf (rectangle) for the door and just us a single line, reserving the full leaf (rectangle) for external doors only to represent the difference.

“Mill” is millimeters. 100mill is about 4 inches :)

Fair enough. The students are the ones giving the answers, but there are no room mics, so there’s not much I can do about that. Try listening with headphones to see if you can hear the answers. Otherwise, they’re all universal dimensions, that’s the whole point of “conventions” - so you can look them up too.
