Ethnic Armenians fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh after the Azeri takeover have told DW that they feared being killed if they'd stayed. More than 70,000 people have left - that's more than half the enclave's population. The territory's leader says it will cease to exist as a stand-alone entity by the end of the year - giving up any hope of independence from Azerbaijan or being joined to Armenia.
Our correspondent Maria Katamadze sent this report from the Armenian town of Goris, about 50 kilometers from the border.

Armenians of Karabakh are given free passage to Armenia. 30 years ago we did not have this chance, many (tens of thousands) were killed on the roads trying to get to a safer place around Karabakh. There are plenty of footage of the first war in the 1990s. Go watch dude. People had to flee their homes barefoot. Now as justice is restored, armenians are officially given an opportunity to stay and live with us, but they have every right to fear - for what they did 30 years ago. Should some stay, they are welcome, but majority will leave and never come back and for a reason

You see, Armenians have lived in those lands for centuries, and that one foul and inhumane decision has been the root cause of strife, death and wars between Armenians and Azeris. Sadly civilians on both sides had to suffer deeply. The current mass exodus of Armenians is due to a very real fear under aggressive Azeri rule, who until last week blocked the Lachin corridor connecting NK and Armenia for almost 1 year, and essentially starving the population there - no food, fuel or electricity sources, no critical medical supplies. That is a clear path to genocide, something Armenians are unfortunately too familiar with given their 1915 genocide by the Ottoman Turks. Armenians have every reason to have fought for their lives, their land, their civilization that thrived in NK for so many centuries. Regardless, it truly breaks my heart for those that have lost their lives as civilians caught in all this mess. Thankfully they are being welcomed to Armenia proper with open arms and heart - I hope that the international community assists with as much humanitarian aid as possible to keep everyone and their families safe and healthy, and to keep our neighboring borders at peace. The real losers were the Armenian people who missed out on billions of $$ in revenue. Today, ARM is the economic sick-man of the region. I wonder if those displaced Armenians had sympathized with the 700,000 Azeris who had to flee Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts as a result of their victory in the first war in the 1990s. So many people pouring out heartfelt emotions in their direction today, completely oblivious or willfully forgetting that they were guilty of doing the same to their neighbors three decades ago. Some of those old men in the video clip were personally responsible for doing it to the Azeris and they went home to those now old women who celebrated and congratulated them for killing and displacing others for being different. To be honest, the main culprit is the denial of the armenian genocide, and the earlier less well known Hamidian and Adana massacre etc, all these would have left impression not to trust the Turks. I am from Hong Kong, so I always reflect how wise the Japanese government react all these years after world war 2, how they actively seek reconciliation with neighbouring countries, unlike turkey and Azerbaijan. If turkey had formally apologised before the 90s(like Germany and Japan after world war), maybe the Armenians in artsakh would have trust and co exist with Azeri/ Turks.
